And that's not even getting into the plans we need for reunification...looking at health care, investment, education. Studies so far have shown EVERYONE on the island would be better off.

The British governments almost destroyed the once prosperous North of Ireland. With reunification we would see huge investment and not least the goodwill of every country on the globe. I hate seeing other Irish people write it off. Especially people in the South who gained THEIR independence from Britain but won't help their fellow Irish citizens, who have been treated abominably, achieve the same. It's shameful.

I agree it would be expensive but I simply cannot see a No vote in the inevitable referendum in Ireland - there has to be a referendum in NI and Ireland.
As hard as it would be financially, I just can't see a No.
There's a lot of work ahead. Work that has already started to make Ireland more welcoming and diverse.
The next GE in Ireland will be interesting because I don't think the other parties will be able to keep Sinn Fein out of government much longer (much as I hate Sinn Fein).

I completely disagree. Please link the polls showing the majority in favour of reunification?

The equiv of a Trump and Brexit vote. I sincerely hope people have, by now, learned that any change is not better than no change!

And quite frankly, any Irish person who would prefer to see their country carved up and part of it u set their oppressors' rule should be ashamed. Their ancestors would be turning in their graves.

The once prosperous north was shipbuilding. I doubt Game of Thrones would be put in the same category.
We have peace and that is what is important. Our ancestors were the people who agreed to partition. Nobody wants a return to the troubles. We’d do well to leave things as they are.

bellinisurge · 29/12/2020 09:43

I'd like to think the status quo that has worked so well will keep going. Until something positively better evolves.

I got dh The Atlas of Unusual Borders for Christmas. It has been eye opening.

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 10:04

The thing is, you can't now leave things as they are. The UK as a whole has left the EU, leaving NI with a different relationship to Great Britain. This is bound to have an effect.

SnowyOwlWan · 29/12/2020 10:20

Bloody hell, what I want is peace and economic stability.

That's the direction I'll be casting my next vote.

Although I agree, the next govt will probably be a sinn fein govt. And NOT because of nationalism solely, so many people view them as the champion of the underdog now.

No one agreed to partition. Even Michael Collins said he had signed his death warrant by signing it. And he was right. It wasn't a free choice.

Ffs do you even know your heritage? The Irish citizens in the North would go through anything for our country, only to see so-called Irish citizens in the South hmm and haa over their own country's independence??? Piss off. Us Irish in the North are far more Irish than you...how fucking ironic!

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 29/12/2020 22:49

I honestly don't think you know two things about Irish history. 😖😖

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 29/12/2020 23:23

BUMP

Dying to hear what @Thismustbelove has to say about Michael Collins.

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 29/12/2020 23:44

Nothing about Michael Collins...how weird.🤣🙄
