Just been announced

OP posts:
winterrainydays · 24/12/2020 15:23

It's done now. I'm just waiting to see what affect the customs issues have on our food imports before I can stop worrying about it...

As for the long term affects well our kids will have to pick up the pieces.

I'm hoping the upcoming generation of rich white Eton boys who will control the UK are not as fucked up and psychopathic/narcissistic as the current bunch.

JamieLeesCurtains · 24/12/2020 15:24

It's not what Mumsnet thinks that matters today, it's what the Tory ERG types like Mark Francois think of the deal that'll determine whether it's 'good enough'.

I suspect the schism in the ruling Party and indeed inside government is far from over.

fussychica · 24/12/2020 15:25

Apparently one of the few specifics mentioned is that UK has opted out of Erasmus. Not sure what will happen to all those on courses now and in the future that have a year abroad as part of their course that would normally be part of this scheme.

JamieLeesCurtains · 24/12/2020 15:26

Daily Mail reporting there's still details to be ironed out during today.

sashagabadon · 24/12/2020 15:26

I don’t think it matters what Mark Francis does or does not think now. Might have done for Teresa may but Boris has an 80 seat majority

MarshaBradyo · 24/12/2020 15:26

Yep I can’t see it not getting through quickly. Advisor on radio saying same thing.
JamieLeesCurtains · 24/12/2020 15:27

There are 70+ ERGers and a whole heap of other unhappy Tory MPs

JamieLeesCurtains · 24/12/2020 15:28

Personally I'd love to see the back of Mark bloody Francois and his ilk

laudemio · 24/12/2020 15:28

Thank goodness, well done Ursula, Lord Frost, Boris and Barnier.
UvDLs lack of gloating is admirable, she is a remarkable woman. I think if she had been in charge instead of Junker we might still be in. Still it's done now.

MarshaBradyo · 24/12/2020 15:28

Johnson speaking now. He’s more in his element with good news

AethelsWhiteGoose · 24/12/2020 15:29

No Erasmus so my dc will have more opportunities than their cousins because I as a British woman happened to marry an EU national. Doesn’t seem like progress to me.

Still a deal better than no deal.

sashagabadon · 24/12/2020 15:29

Totally agree re. Ursula. She is a class act

MrsRogerLima · 24/12/2020 15:30

I felt physical relief when this announcement arrived.

Some will pick it apart but at least we have a deal! Merry Christmas everyone!

summerstorms · 24/12/2020 15:30

Does it have to be voted on before it's certain?

baroqueandblue · 24/12/2020 15:30

Assume there is no need now for the Brexit board to continue?

If you believe that then you understand pretty much nothing about the way this 'deal' has been arrived at and what it will mean for both 'sides' in the future. It has to be stuck to and honoured dynamically, from day to day, and that will be an ongoing challenge that will continue to hit the headlines for years to come. The discussion is far from over Hmm

ListeningQuietly · 24/12/2020 15:31

Better than no deal
but I'll wait to see what is and is not covered.

This is just the beginning of the next stage

Graphista · 24/12/2020 15:31

Very cautiously optimistic here.

We need to

1 wait and see what the details are

2 see if they get the formal approval needed in Brussels and London I'm hoping the no deal MPs won't be arses over this as I can't see it benefiting them to do so politically or personally though that isn't always a deterrent

Deal is better than no deal yes, but no Brexit would still have been best.

sashagabadon · 24/12/2020 15:34

Thank goodness Boris didn’t give in to the calls to delay until end of Jan. He called that right. We didn’t need the uncertainty to go on any longer.

8thplace · 24/12/2020 15:35

Really pleased with this outcome. Well done to all negotiators for sticking it out and , yes I know, well done Boris for delivering. Christmas eve deals are the best, can you get me a puppy now???

MarshaBradyo · 24/12/2020 15:35

Good speech enjoying a bit of positivity

HannibalHayes · 24/12/2020 15:36

Better than no deal, but still so much less than what we had, and less than what we were promised.

Deal!!!!!!!!
AaronPurr · 24/12/2020 15:37

Did he just say now for the sprouts. Confused

sashagabadon · 24/12/2020 15:37

@MarshaBradyo

Good speech enjoying a bit of positivity
Yes enjoyed Boris speech. He sounds chipper!
Orf1abc · 24/12/2020 15:38

It's certainly better than no deal. Johnson's rhetoric towards the EU has changed vastly, "culturally, emotionally, historically attached".

The people who are unhappy are the no dealers, and the "what about our fish" types. Certain social media groups are absolutely frothing at this, although they don't seem sure what they've lost... or won... or voted for.

EasterIssland · 24/12/2020 15:38

Has the deal been published ?
