Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

Power cuts and the 3 day week, Medievalist? Winter of discontent? Britain the "sick man of Europe" ?

Tolleshunt · 02/09/2019 23:06

Exactly, zebra. Not something to relish going back to.

Mirrormirror999 · 02/09/2019 23:07

I repatriation ... Do you think this situation is the most catastrophic of the modern age?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 23:08

Dried mushrooms are silly mone

They are!

My dad loves dried fruit...wouldnt be that cheap for things like apricots but he’d deffo get his money back on apples and pears

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:08

I answered you Mirror. What's your response?

Mirrormirror999 · 02/09/2019 23:09

Sorry ‘I repeat’

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:10

I assume you mean "repeat" Mirror?

Strange autocorrect - "repatriation" Hmm Wonder where you've been typing that!

Mamamia456 · 02/09/2019 23:10

Zebras - If you want to eat chlorinated chicken that's your choice. I won't be eating it.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:13

I don't want to eat chlorinated chicken. That's my point - I want to stay in the EU, with the EU trade deals - not leave the EU and have trade deals with the US with their chlorinated chicken.

Mamamia456 · 02/09/2019 23:13

Zebras - There would be enough food if we didn't throw so much of it away.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:16

We make roughly 50% of our own food.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:17

Actually less than that I think.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 02/09/2019 23:18

No-one has suggested this is the most catastrophic etc, have they? Only you mentioned it, mirrormirror

I've read that feeding London alone takes more land than the whole of the uk land mass, so even if we all went vegan I'm pretty sure the uk cant grow 65 million mouths worth of 'seasonal food'. That seems... problematic, if it's what we're planning to rely on.

Mirrormirror999 · 02/09/2019 23:19

The bottom line is that change is scary!! But sometimes change is good!! I understand why people are scared of change but what if ... this is the best for us? It’s easy to go with the status quo, but it’s only because it’s easy. You don’t know what you don’t know!

Tolleshunt · 02/09/2019 23:19

Zebras - There would be enough food if we didn't throw so much of it away

Where are you getting your figures from on that, mamamia?

Can you do us a link?

Mamamia456 · 02/09/2019 23:20

Zebras - But even if (and it's a big if) we did import chlorinated chicken, you still don't have to eat it. Some of the chickens that we have now are pumped full of chemicals to make them grow faster.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:22

I think Mama is making it up.

Change can be good - but swapping trade with the EU with the US is really not good. The EU have fantastic food standard laws. The US don't.

I can't think of a single advantage. no doubt we'll still end up with EU food one way or another - but at higher prices. Who wants that. Don't all jump at once.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:24

Mama - give me one advantage of stopping our EU trade deal, and starting a US one that gets us imported chlorinated chicken.

Just one. Given neither you or I want to eat it.

Mirrormirror999 · 02/09/2019 23:27

We’re in a period of change! That’s a fact! How do we respond to this now? We can’t turn back time but the future is not bleak!!

Mamamia456 · 02/09/2019 23:27

Zebra - What am I making up? Can't do links lol, but if you google food waste there are many websites that can give you facts and figures about the amount of food that is wasted in the UK each year.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:29

The future is not bleak! It's bright with chlorinated chicken! Youjust hav to believe!

One. Advantage. Please. A tangible and provable advantage to US food trade over EU.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:31

Can't do links lol,

Why not? Copy the link, put either side of it. Easy.

One advantage of getting our food from the US instead of the EU.

Tolleshunt · 02/09/2019 23:34

Hmmm, i’ve Just had a quick gander at the Fareshare site, and they state that enough still-edible food is wasted each year that would make 650 million meals per year.

That would work out at less than 10 meals per person in the UK per year that we could claw back, if we eliminated food waste. So nowhere near enough to cover the deficit we would face if food imports ceased.

Mirrormirror999 · 02/09/2019 23:34

@zebra you’re making it bleak!! Maybe i’m a flaky believer in people and their inherent goodness, intelligence and compassion??

Mamamia456 · 02/09/2019 23:37

Zebras - You were the one who brought up chlorinated chicken, I just said you didn't have to eat it if you didn't want to.

Where did I say it would be good to have a trade deal with America? Who knows who we're going to have trade deals with. We haven't even left yet. We may still leave with a deal with the EU.
