Brexit

Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

About 8 or so years ago I saw a guy in sainsburys with one of those shallow trolleys full of jars of mint sauce. I was completely puzzled as to why. If I saw it now I'd just think brexit :o

PinkLacy · 01/09/2019 18:59

We’re still laughing!

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 18:59

Hard core

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:00

I suspect most are no longer laughing now we're seeing an idea of how it's going to be

OP posts:
BeanBag7 · 01/09/2019 19:01

They're still laughing because nothing has happened yet, so at this point stockpiling hasn't been useful. If/when Brexit does occur, that's when we will be the ones laughing.

ZenNudist · 01/09/2019 19:01

But 6m ago twas a waste of time.

helpmum2003 · 01/09/2019 19:02

I wouldn't be scathing; each to their own but I'm not worried or stockpiling....

Silenceissilver · 01/09/2019 19:04

I’m still laughing.
Worst case scenario would be rationing.
Been there, done that. Not a big deal really. We won’t starve no matter what happens!

SquintEastwood · 01/09/2019 19:04

I think building a stock pile to cover any family/societal emergencies is sensible but is there really any need to goad those who don't?

I've seen the comments on previous threads but why start this and rise to it? Makes you look just as snide.

Cocoismydog · 01/09/2019 19:06

What idea are you seeing? Genuine question. I haven’t seen any difference yet; what am I missing?

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:09

You're right, I am snide and petulant. But the little 'crying with laughter' emojia and the condenscion shown to posters like bellini made me very angry. Suppose I still am. And now govt docs are showing there will be food and medicine shortages and that's not the worst case scenario, its the MOST LIKELY. I want one of those laughing buffoons to come and acknowledge that they were incredibly patronising and downright wrong. Doubt it'll ever happen but doesn't make me any less angry tbh.

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:11

Coco, the yellowhammer leak suggested shortages. A recent bmj analysis showed the health of the population suffering. Give today (? yesterday) used weasel words to suggest there will be shortages but they'll stop short of actual deaths from starvation. It's all in the news.

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:11

Gove not give
If you're not seeing all this I can only assume you're looking the other way

People lose their shit over the unavailability of fried chicken given the KFC fiasco.

But rationing is “no big deal”

Alrighty.....

Looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

I’m not stockpiling personally, not because I feel certain “all will be well” but because I am hopelessly disorganised.

I will be punching the first Leaver who says “it’s no big deal” regarding shortages if my relative runs out of insulin though. ...or if cancer investigations are put on hold because we couldn’t stockpile the stuff we need to perform them.

No big deal until it is a big deal.

Mamamia456 · 01/09/2019 19:16

Stealthpolarbear - Why are you getting worked up over random strangers' comments, it's meaningless. It shouldn't make any difference to your life whatsoever.

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:17

Oh font be so silly of course they won't let that happen.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:18

Mamamia456 I've explained why

I think people who think it will all be fine will be laughing until they go to Tescos and see half empty shelves. Either it will be the same, in which case, I'll have a LOT of biscuits to eat and some saved time not going shopping in November, food prices will go up but there will be food, in which case Id have had cheap food or there will be major food shortages, in which case, I will be able to feed my children from my stash. If the last 2 scenarios happen, people laughing will have other things to worry about, like panic buying food or sharp increases in basic foodstuffs. I still expect BoJo to shove the WA in front of Parliament at the last minute with some minor adjustments or changes to the political agreement and for it to be passed, but its a win/win for the prepared. I also read that far from stockpiling causing food shortages, retailers are hoping for it to provide a boost to their profits after a drop in the last quarter.

Mamamia456 · 01/09/2019 19:21

I just don't get it, it's just people sat behind a keyboard who you don't know and will never know.

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:22

"still expect BoJo to shove the WA in front of Parliament at the last minute with some minor adjustments or changes to the political agreement and for it to be passed"
God I hope so. But tbh I was sure it would pass the last time TM wheeled it out. I was genuinely surprised when it failed again.

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:23

Mamamia456 I remember you continually going on about your concern for my mental health on a previous thread, after I'd repeatedly asked you to stop. (huge apologies if I have the wrong poster).
I'm asking you now, once, nicely not to start. I will not be engaging. As I'm just words on a screen, why do you care what I do?

OP posts:
Kubo · 01/09/2019 19:24

I don’t think I ever laughed, but I have to say my belief that a UK government would never inflict the consequences of no deal on the country has been shaken.

I still can’t believe they will do it, not really.

StealthPolarBear · 01/09/2019 19:26

Kubo I hope you're right. I know there is a rumour Johnson is doing this so he can't say he didn't try. Etc. And that this is all for the purposes of negotiation.
I get that but if that is the case the way he's going about it is so wrong.

I thought stockpiling is ridiculous - and still do.

Supermarkets have/will stockpile for you - they say they have done it as good practice. Unless you have a barn you really cannot stockpile as much as a purpose built storage facility. I mean how long are you expecting this disruption to last?

I think it is tin foil hat and a displacement activity for those who don’t feel in control of their lives. It is pretty benign - no harm in it - but it is very like people getting excessively excited about power cuts. Ok, you’re prepared...
