Brexit

Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

OP posts:

OFGS Mirror. Don't be a fool. Have you not heard Donald Trump speak? Have you not seen his actions. He does not care about the British economy or our food standards, he just want to make money and win his perceived twitter battles.

The EU is where we should stay for our own good.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:41

Well you seem to want to leave the EU, Mama. That will mean US trade deals - or did you miss Boris' meeting with Trump?

Tell me why I should welcome this - give me one advantage of a US food trade deal over the EU?

Mirrormirror999 · 02/09/2019 23:47

Are you serious Zebra? You have no fucking idea if real life!!

thatsnotmycateither · 02/09/2019 23:47

I don't get the anger / ridicule at people stocking up.

Surely - if you stick up, then either you won't need it and can eat it slowly or will be very grateful for it.

If you don't stock up, you'll either be ok or wished you'd stocked up.

So surely, unless you're going into major debt by doing it, stocking up is the win win option? As long as you buy things you'd eat anyway or be prepared to take a small hit as an insurance policy and donate the stuff you no longer want to a food bank.

We pay insurance for other things. My housing, life, critical illness and car insurance comes to around £800 a year and I don't question that. 🤷‍♀️

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:55

What ridicule? Trump makes himself the laughing stock - do you see his twitter at all?

Why should I welcome deals with a tantrumming toddler on twitter over our established links with the EU? Why should I want trade deals and food from across the Atlantic, rather than across the Channel? And that's just food. Why should I want a threat to the Union, to the NI peace process, the economy??

Give me one bloody advantage of any of this brexit crap? This has been asked so many times, to be met first with sunlit-uplands-unicorn type responses, then with "blitz spirit" type ones. It's not bloody good enough. Why should we leave the EU if you can't give us a single example of a benefit? To us the UK citizens?

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:58

I'll give you not one, but two simple advantages to NOT leaving.

-the pound will immediately pick up.

-the government will stop telling us to stockpile food and medicine.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 23:59

Give me two immediate, verifiable, comparable advantages to leaving.

Defenbaker · 03/09/2019 00:00

I never laughed, I think it's wise to stockpile things like tinned and dried food, toiletries and medicines, for many reasons. Brexit with no deal could well result in disrupted supplies, as could extreme weather events or civil unrest. Having enough food to enable you to hunker down and ride out the storm (literal or otherwise) might make life easier to cope with until things get back to normal. Plus being ill can make shopping difficult or impossible, so it makes sense to store extra food, if you are able to.

Being prepared is a good thing, OP. Don't let any snide comments bother you - those people might end up laughing the other side of their faces, if things go pear shaped.

My hope is that after Brexit the government will do more to support and encourage UK farmers/fishermen/food producers. I think that we could become more self sufficient if we put our minds to it, but it will take vision and political will to make that happen.

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 00:04

Two more:

-no more NI border issue.

-significantly less threat to the Union - Scotland secondary bid to leave the UK has stepped up massively since the No Deal threat. Scotland voted to remain as a nation.

And one bonus - No chlorinated chicken from the US.

So that's FIVE. Five comparable advantages to leaving the EU please.

Ligresa · 03/09/2019 00:07

Why have you made this thread about Brexit? Don't be a bore.

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 00:12

Some frippery ones:

-We won't have to get additional visa to go on holiday in Europe.

-Everyone will stop we're dicks.

A couple more serious ones:

  • EU nationals who have made their home in the UK will be relieved to not have to do whatever it it the're doing to stay.

-UK Nationals living and working in the EU will be able to remain there - which last I heard, had not been confirmed.

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 00:13

The thread is about brexit Ligresa. It's on the brexit forum Confused

Tolleshunt · 03/09/2019 00:14

Eh? The thread is about Brexit, Ligresa. It’s about stockpiling to offset the massive risks our eejit politicians are exposing us to by being stupid enough to career towards a No Deal Brexit.

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 00:16

So I've come up with NINE immediately verifiable advantages to staying in the EU.

Lets hear some similarly verifiable advantages to leaving.

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 00:18

Everyone will stop we're dicks.

Should be everyone will stop thinking we're dicks.

Because they do I get the feeling most people are feeling for the UK. I would, if I was not from the UK. I feel intensely embarrassed at the mess we're in.

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 00:34

Oooh - where are the brexiteers inundating me with the verifiable advantages of leaving? It shouldn't be that hard.

Since I'm being driven over the cliff in the 52% BREXIT Bus, can't I be told one single verifiable advantage to brexiting?

RosesAndRaindrops · 03/09/2019 00:49

Driven over the cliff in the Brexit Bus, FFS lol .... I think that'll be why no'ones forth coming.
The amount of hyperbole and ranting.... they know there's just no point engaging!

S1naidSucks · 03/09/2019 00:50

Oooh - where are the brexiteers inundating me with the verifiable advantages of leaving?

They’re at their local supermarket just buying a few extra items for any emergencies, such as bad weather, illness, in case the car breaks down and they can’t drive to said supermarket. It’s just them being very practical. Nothing whatsoever to do with reading this thread and the possibility that there might be problems with Brexit. Oh no, not that. 😉

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 00:54

Oh please do engage Roses, you absolute sweetheart. It's not complicated - I would like one verifiable benefit to me, a UK citizen to leaving the EU. ONE. Please. Or Nine, please, as I have given. Whatever.

People will think brexiteers can't come up with even one at this rate.

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 00:56

Or Roses (and this would be great) your solution to the NI border issue.

I'm all ears.

Gwan gwan gwan.

Gwan!

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/09/2019 00:57

think people who think it will all be fine will be laughing until they go to Tescos and see half empty shelves

Probably cleared by all those selfish stockpilers

I don’t have a stock pile. There is no point. I buy daily. If I buy weekly, family just raid the fridge till it is gone.
Can you imagine if I bought 6 months supply of food.

It would be gone by a week on Thursday.

Joy of having teenagers

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 01:01

Ooh I have teenagers too, Oliversmumsarmy, don't fancy them being hungry much, do you?

Can you think of any way out of this brexit mess we're in? Or even one way brexit will benefit me and my teens?

One advantage of brexit anyone?

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 01:02

Come ON!! We HAVE to brexit apparently. WHY?

zebrasdontwearbras · 03/09/2019 01:03

Roses LOL -anything to add?

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/09/2019 01:18

I know that a lot of my friends from one area voted to leave and I can understand their reasoning.

Advantage to Brexit

We (as a country) voted to leave (I am a Remainer)

Dp is diabetic and has terminal cancer.
For a long time now he has had to beg for his insulin prescription.

It is monitored and he has to be careful how much he uses because he could run out as they take so long to fill the prescription. It is like it is rationed.

Dp just wants us out as then he believes we can start getting the a deal in place to continue the supply of insulin and he can do away with this begging and pleading and jumping through hoops to get his medication.
