Thatcher never inspired me - she was against feminism, didn't help women in practice -
and Blair bringing in more women was encouraging if anything

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 14:54

Who likes legal intricacies - especially around Brexit and double especially in another country ?

Counting for the European elections in the Dublin constituency has been suspended until tomorrow morning, following a dispute over the transfer of votes.

The count will resume at 11am.

A disagreement arose between Independents 4 Change candidate Clare Daly and Fianna Fáil's Barry Andrews, over how the returning officer planned to proceed with the count.

The Green Party's Ciarán Cuffe and Fine Gael's Frances Fitzgerald had already been elected by this stage, however the third and fourth seats had yet to be decided.

The issue is important because whoever is deemed to have been elected into the fourth seat can only take office once the UK leaves the European Union.

Mistigri · 28/05/2019 14:55

But people don't vote for candidates for the BXP,

They were voting for their cult leader. You can't tell me the people of Warrington voted for someone who supported the IRA killing Warrington kids. I would think that 99% of BXP voters didn't even know her name.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2019 14:56

I wonder if it's just one Alexandra Phillips who figured out how to draw 2 sets of salary and exes HmmGrin

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 14:58

Thatcher was very Tory feminist. Freedom, education, well paid jobs - children even - are all for naice women.

For some reason, I can't escape the suspicion Hilary Clinton would be the same.

TatianaLarina · 28/05/2019 14:59

Thatcher did fa to promote women in her party or help support in wider society.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2019 15:00

Yep, the Warrington result made me sure BREX voters just voted for Farage,
either blindly, or maybe prepared to sacrifice all principles for Brexit

Who the FUCK knowingly votes for someone who excuses IRA terrorists murdering 2 little children in your town
(especially poignant that the bombing was the day before Mother's Day too, a horrible anniversary for the 2 bereaved mothers)

TatianaLarina · 28/05/2019 15:01

Watching Thatcher on BBC2 last night. I am struck by how much she influenced my teenage self. I never questioned my right / responsibility / ability to smash the glass ceiling

She influenced my teen years to be relentlessly anti-Tory.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2019 15:05

DG Another pressure against a further extension

People keep thinking just about UK demands,
completely overlooking those extra MEPs some countries have elected, who can only take their seat after the Uk actually Brexits.

All those countries with MEPs in limbo will want the extra seats and influence asap

The President of the EP was also furious at the last extension because of this, saying it was an outrage against the EP

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2019 15:08

Thatcher forced me to Germany for my first job there !

Her de-industrialisation wiped out available jobs in my field ... and I wanted to leave a firm that had some very sexist attitudes, which she didn't help at all

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 15:09

So hows the no-deal planning going ?

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 15:13

Oh, and before we crown Javid as the honest character, what's going on with the Home Office and it's illegal actions. (Although to be fair, I really need to state which illegal action ....)

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2019 15:23

When any government says it's "prepared for no-deal,"
remember how they were "prepared" for a nuclear war: Hmm

they would have been rushed to bunkers prepped with air / filters, inflatable sex dolls and several years supply of food & booze,

whilst we would have had to tape all our windows with brown paper,
while simultaneously crouching down under the table, kissing our arses goodbye.

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 15:27

I asked, because last I remember, all the no-deal planning was being stood down and contracts no being renewed, etc etc.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 28/05/2019 15:30

So hows the no-deal planning going

I’ve been eating the stash and not replacing itBlush

I think I need to redouble my efforts. I’ve been thinking I have until October but who knows what madness could happen.

tobee · 28/05/2019 15:35

Dd & I are making a trip to our favourite no deal stash hypermarket this evening!! Wink

jasjas1973 · 28/05/2019 15:40

I asked, because last I remember, all the no-deal planning was being stood down and contracts no being renewed, etc etc

Feel sure that Gayling has his finger on the pulse, will have learned the lessons from previous no-deal planning and that new contracts can be signed, offering great VFM for the taxpayer.

{as with Emma Thompson not seeing the irony of jetting in to lecture the little people about climate change.}

Having seen the OUTRAGE in the DM about this it is not as bad as it might seem really. The climate damage is the same as if she had a 'cheap seat' at the back so the principle is about flying at all, not the cost of her seat. You could almost argue that the plane 'was going that way anyway' whether she was on it or not. She was certainly subsidising the cheap seat occupants.
You could easily pick an argument about HS2 if it ever materialises, that a train every 20 minutes? all through the day just to make it 'convenient' for (presumably) business persons who can't organise their time properly. Will all the trains be full or at least say 75% full?

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 15:53

Climate change is another area where the rich get to lord it over the little people. You carry on paying more for less under the guise of "the environment" and we'll carry on jetting around the world as before.

I bet a military jet uses a years worth of civilian carbon allowance too.

I notice Sainsburys deli offer to "save plastic" by "allowing" you to bring in your own containers (the hygiene implications don't bear thinking about). I didn't notice they charge less to such customers.

Greenwash. It's a thing.

Will all the trains be full or at least say 75% full?

I chanced to wait for a bus last week, during rush hour. The stop was just before a roundabout ("island" if your a Brummie) so the traffic was crawling past me. In 17 minutes, 58 cars passed me, of which 54 had one occupant and 2 people were not wearing seatbelts. I didn't count lorries, vans or (obviously) buses.

Again, "if it really mattered" single occupancy journeys would be "nudgely" discouraged. I draw my own conclusions from the fact they aren't.

I dread to think what my lungs looked like afterwards.

howabout · 28/05/2019 16:26

Yep Greenwash is definitely a thing.

mellongoose · 28/05/2019 17:14

The Labour response was to note that generally Tory firsts are not representative of their class and tend to work to smash the ladder below them.

Typical response.

Feminist I may be (not quite sure tbh) but I'm really not a fan of women only lists. I'd rather (and have) achieve a on merit, beating men and women in the same contest. So long as women are given an equal opportunity we should be more than capable of getting to where we want to be.
