They'd better boot me out of the labour party too then, because I voted lib dem too. Mind you I'm only holding on to my membership in the hopes that I can vote in the next leadership contest.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 28/05/2019 13:18

Without the 'hanging chad' debacle, there would have been a President Gore.........

You are so right. No Bush, probably no 9/11, no Iraq War, no Trump. Truly world events can turn on what seem in a global scale to be minor

And possibly a much more serious and timely response to climate change.

woman19 · 28/05/2019 13:21

I was wanting an explanation of how it could have affected the vote. Thanks red very interesting.

There is no evidence that the scale of those denied the vote runs to 1.8million

The trouble is, there is no evidence or investigation at all. All we have is 1000s of personal testimonies.

The loss of EU voters votes in 2016 could have made some, if not a lot of difference.

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 13:25

I suspect there's some crap reporting going on here.

Campbell can't have been expelled for voting LibDem, since no one can know that he did.

He can be expelled for encouraging others to vote LibDem, I imagine.

Be curious to know what would happen if he said that he claimed to vote LibDem "for a laugh" ?

I'd also be curious about the legality of taking any action against someone based on their statements about how they voted ? I would happily imagine some Victorian (or American) factory boss trying that sort of stunt. But presumably the Labour party rules are formulated so as not to invite legal challenge.

However, just in case I needed it, I'm grateful for the suggestion from Labour to vote elsewhere. Message received loud and clear.

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 13:29

Complete digression, but of note to some here, anyone else catch the hi-def footage of Queen Vic. Complete with shades ...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-48427315/queen-victoria-as-you-ve-never-seen-her-before

I wonder if all this nostalgia for centenaries and bicentenaries is partly what is driving the current mood of (some of) the country ?

We certainly seem to have shifted from looking forwards to looking back a lot.

Oakenbeach · 28/05/2019 13:40

I wouldn't bet on some Tories not going back. UKIP swept the board in the 2014 Euro elections but then did dismally the year after in the GE

Possibly, but they won’t swing all back behind them in the 2 weeks since the Euros, especially for a by-election.

howabout · 28/05/2019 13:42

Publicly stating you voted against the Party gets you expelled. Also necessary to disavow links to previous parties when joining.

Kate Hoey is always very careful to state she is Labour through and through and making the case for the 5m Labour Leavers. Her stance has helped with the constructive ambiguity up till now. Would probably even help if Labour go full Remain and she nonetheless stayed to build the case for Reform.

The Leave and Remain campaigns were all cross party.

KH's suggestions re Brexit Party just now are no different to cross party
suggestions coming from loads of other people in all parties.

I agree about Rory being on team Gove. I think the same analysis applies to Hunt's comments. Of the cabinet contenders I would rather have Javid but Gove has got off to a good start unpicking the WA by taking the citizen's rights issue outside it unilaterally and making the more generous offer (as originally suggested by Leave campaign).

PinkieTuscadero · 28/05/2019 13:45

Campbell can't have been expelled for voting LibDem, since no one can know that he did.

He announced on BBC on Sunday night that he'd voted Lib Dem. But as he waited until after Thursday to announce this they can't say he was encouraging other Labour voters to do likewise.

Piggywaspushed · 28/05/2019 13:46

So toothbrush are you suggesting the BXP will win Peterborough?

howabout · 28/05/2019 13:46

Oaken I agree. The Tory Leavers of Peterborough have a unique opportunity to influence the Leadership race. Absolutely no way I would envisage them giving it away by meekly trotting back home. Also don't see Labour vote reconvening for similar reasons.

Ought to make it an easy Brexit Party win and they have a strong local candidate.

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 13:47

Of the cabinet contenders I would rather have Javid but Gove has got off to a good start unpicking the WA by taking the citizen's rights issue outside it unilaterally and making the more generous offer (as originally suggested by Leave campaign).

Javid has no chance.

And if you ignore anything the candidates say that they know they'll never have to deliver, Gove hasn't said anything either.

Oakenbeach · 28/05/2019 13:48

@Piggywaspushed

BXP will walk it... I wish I was wrong, but they will... Tories will languish well down. Just look at how they voted in the Euro elections!

woman19 · 28/05/2019 13:52

Kate Hoey is always very careful to state she is Labour through and through and making the case for the 5m Labour Leavers

Hoey has shared stages with the turquoise leader and spoken at rallies attended by Yaxley Lennon.

She's advocated a 'People's Army' 2 years after Jo Cox was assassinated and the turquoise leader boasted of donning khaki and getting a rifle.

She was only 'censured' by Corbyn. Hmm

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 13:52

I feel vaguely comforted I have never been a member of any political party ...

Iambuffy · 28/05/2019 13:56

Kate hoey is a thundercunt.

Piggywaspushed · 28/05/2019 13:59

oaken I fear you might be right. It depends a little on how well the Tory peddles his Brexit message. It's a funny old place, Peterborough.

howabout · 28/05/2019 14:02

Impact of EU Nationals denied a vote would be most concentrated in London as 1) that is the area with the highest number and concentration relative to the rest of the population and 2) London didn't have local elections.

Suggest Remain vote split had more impact here(?)

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 14:04

It's a funny old place, Peterborough.

One of my first housemates was a Muslim from Peterborough ....

Hazardtired · 28/05/2019 14:11

Well last wk's Mr Hazard is iffy is this wk's Mr Hazard is bad.

Everybody keep your fingers crossed that I don't implode

howabout · 28/05/2019 14:11

What makes you think Javid has no chance?

Great backstory. Seen to be at least trying to detoxify the Home Office. Brexiter but not extreme.

TatianaLarina · 28/05/2019 14:11

I don’t think Campbell will go LD

Alastair PEOPLE’S VOTE Campbell @campbellclaret

  1. Sad and disappointed to receive email expelling me from @uklabour - particularly on a day leadership finally seems to be moving to the right place on Brexit, not least thanks to tactical voting by party members, including MPs, councillors and peers who back @peoplesvote_uk .
  1. I was not intending to publicise this at this stage, but have had calls from friends in the Party telling me it is now widely known and likely to be leaked. I have been advised by lawyers with expertise in this field I have grounds for appeal against expulsion and shall do so
  1. I am and always will be Labour. I voted Lib Dem, without advance publicity, to try to persuade Labour to do right thing for country/party. In light of appeal, I won't be doing media on this. But hard not to point out difference in the way anti-Semitism cases have been handled.
  1. Plenty of precedent of members voting for other parties/causes. Some are now senior Party staff. Approach also contrasts with our era when TB was being pressed by whips to withdraw whip for JC and others for persistently voting against @UKLabour in Parliament, and he said No

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 14:14

What makes you think Javid has no chance?

Being blunt, because someone with his skin colour isn't going to appeal to Brexiteers.

MrPan · 28/05/2019 14:16

Yep, he isn't white. He isn't a practicing muslim person, but that won't matter. He isn't white-skinned.

howabout · 28/05/2019 14:17

Voting against the Whip is not the same thing.

Making a decision on how to handle what may or may not be baseless accusations is not the same as dealing with someone who has admitted the offence.

Interested to see the legal case if any. Confused Surely easier to go for mea culpa and apply to rejoin if the Party has now moved to where he wants it to be?

PinkieTuscadero · 28/05/2019 14:18

What makes you think Javid has no chance?

The average Tory party member is a white 72 year old. Elderly, white, Conservatives are not going to vote for a Muslim.
