"Common Market is one thing, big political state is something else."

Its interesting that this erroneous point is still brought out.

The political aspects of the EEC were known in 1975, its on the leaflets from that referendum.

Furthermore, Cameron got an agreement for exemption from ever closer union ( although he didn't actually need to) which indicates that we would never have been part of a big political state in the extremely unlikely event of it happening.

Poor justification.

I think it would be very interesting to see if we could ask eu to extend for a week, or even a few days. This won't affect the average Joe but will ensure tax havens have to bill Mogg at al - that would show up who is pulling the strings. I think no deal wouldn't be so poular in the media if this were achieved.

How would that work, LonelyLow?

Do people who don't get their news from alt right websites seriously believe that a federal Europe is just down the road? That ship sailed when the U.K. pushed for membership to be opened to Eastern European countries.

Moussemoose · 18/01/2019 11:54

Can I just say federalism does not mean a centralised all powerful EU. That is the way levers use the word but it is incorrect.

A federal government means holding as little power as possible centrally and devolving as much power and decision making to regions or states as possible.

When Europeans use the term 'federal EU' they are talking about restricting centralised power.

The EU is committed to subsidiarity - local choices and local power.
