At last, a thread that talks sense. What are we doing. I'm embarrassed for us. I'm sad for my children. I am skint after every food shop.

There's no more time for 'edging towards'
No more fencing sitting.
It's now or never (never=no deal and a poor, unstable nation)
No more time for carefully considered arguments. The questions are brutally simple.

Do you want to live in a first world country with a prosperous economy? Do you want to keep your workers' rights? Peace throughout the UK (NI)? Do you want to continue living in a secure, liberal democracy? Do you want your daughters (specifically) to continue enjoying the same rights you've had and hopefully more equality?
Do you want protection of this country's environment? Access to healthcare? Personal aspirations that may go beyond the UK borders? World class higher education?
An open and culturally rich society?
And so much more.

I know what I want and what will DEFINITELY NOT help with any of the above.
I no longer care if I'm rude. I've had enough of that pile of shit.

Hazardswan · 17/08/2018 12:31

Seriously is there nothing we can do if this shit show goes ahead?

is this really what people wanted?

How can we make it stop?

Well done Mrsr
I must be slipping because I listened to Today this morning. TBF I don't have much else to do on the way to work - can't stand music or chat at that hour. Anyway, there was a longish factual and sensible piece about aviation - otoh it was tucked into some deadish space before the 7:30 sport segment.

woman11017 · 17/08/2018 14:03

Congratulations MrsR Smile and thanks red

Nothing about the actual story, but it's interesting how the BBC files news from the Isle of Man

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-isle-of-man-45221014

"World-Europe", rather than "UK". Which is politically correct, if not geographically.

So how do they file news from Tibet ?

Placemarking. Hope we're all looking forward to the no deal warning notices.

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2018 15:24

Have you heard the one about what happens to passports if there is a no deal brexit?

If there's no deal we can't import anything.

If we can't import anything, we can't import British passports made in France....

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2018 15:25

Wish I was eligible for an Irish passport. Sadly only my Mum is, in our family.

BrummieRemainer · 17/08/2018 15:41

DS applied for his first passport a few weeks ago. He's a UK citizen, as the DS of his DM. Who appears to have made life very hard for him (and herself) by marrying, and taking my (obviously) non-English surname.

(For various reasons we were together for 13 years before getting married just over 10 years ago. So DS grew up for 11 years with a "normal" surname, and since then with a "foreign" one)

Until 2 years ago, no one had any problem. Since then DW has had multiple "reviews" of her benefits. DS has been asked (4 times) by HMRC to provide proof of status, and has just had to go into an interview for his passport "because of an administration issue". Where he was "interviewed" by someone whose English was quite hard to understand. He said they were surprised he was born in Birmingham "with a name like that".

That said, I've had 2 agencies now advise me that they think I should reverse my nationalities on my CV to highlight my UK citizenship is in addition to my Italian citizenship. Apparently it's starting to matter.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/08/2018 15:44

Thanks, red

and congratulations, MrsR to your DC (and to you for the hard work)

prettybird · 17/08/2018 15:46

My dad is eligible for an Irish passport - but he most inconsiderately didn't think to claim it before I was born Wink

....at the time a Commonwealth passport was fine Grin - and then we "upgraded" to British ones. Technically, I could still claim a passport for my birth country as I was under 18 when I was naturalised - but it really wouldn't help me Sad

🐟🎣👑 Place mat king Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 17/08/2018 15:46

That's all pretty depressing / worrying, brummie Sad

FishesaPlenty · 17/08/2018 15:53

If there's no deal we can't import anything.

Just not true Red, sorry.

I'm doing a lot of my work around this at the moment and the 'no imports' scenario is rubbish. There may well be delays around Customs but things will still get through. Applying what already happens to airfreight to the land/sea entry points I expect that goods from known sources going to approved facilities wouldn't be subject to any checks at all and would leap-frog any hold-ups at Dover. Presumably they'd still be subject to any queues on the other side of the Channel though.

It's quite possible that the actual finished passports might be produced abroad and posted out individually of course - in which case they're prioritised as postal items with no customs value.

FishesaPlenty · 17/08/2018 15:55

I've always though that over-egging the Remain pudding is as bad as the shite-pudding being peddled by the brexiteers.
