tbh, the very talented in science, engineering, IT etc will still be able to work in the EU

  • there is great demand and they would be given visas just like those from India, China, SKorea with whom I work (large tech firm in Germany)

It is the less qualified, those who have yet to find their niche, who will find some existing opportunities in the EU closed off.

Thanks Red.

Well done MrsR8. I’ve been trying to trace my DF’s birth parents through Ancestry UK. He was born in the 1920s and unofficially adopted. Kept his original surname but never knew anything about his birth parents. Only had a shortened version of his birth certificate with no details about parents. I’ve been clinging to the hope one or other of them was Irish (several Irish friends commented over the years that they thought he may have been Irish based on his looks). Got the birth certificate this week. No father’s name, as I expected. Mother’s middle name was Marie, which I thought promising (straw-clutching!) but I’ve hit a dead end. Can’t trace anyone with her exact name so can’t get hold of her birth certificate to establish nationality. Not sure where to go from here...

Annoyingly, DH’s mother is from another EU country but if you were born before 1986 you can only get a passport if your father was from that country Angry.

Looks like we’re stuck here...

Thanks guys and Trees congrats to your DS. I am so so proud of him as he has had a lot to deal with. It’s young people like my DS who weren’t old enough to vote in the Referendum but who will bear the biggest brunt that get to me the most.
I can’t remember who it was but somebody mentioned the ‘shelf life’ of the Referendum vote which I thought was a really good point. If this is still going on in a years time eg 3 years after the initial vote and all the polls are showing 60:40 in favour of Remain,
how much validity is there in trotting out the ‘Will of the People’ soundbites?
In GEs, as soon as one party is declared to have a majority, that party becomes the Government and their leader becomes PM.
It isn’t like the US when the winner becomes ‘President Elect’ and they have to wait 2 months until the inauguration to become the ‘proper’ President.
As D Davis himself said ‘A democracy that cannot change its mind ceases to be a democracy’.
If the Referendum had been a GE, we would have been coming up to halfway through the winning party’s term.
I still have to pinch myself to make sure that I am not living in some kind of Dystopian nightmare.

Congratulations to all the DCs for their A level results. I hope their futures are bright although as like mine they seem to be opting for science routes I'm very worried about what opportunities there'll be.

Just thought I'd mention that there's a thread popping up in active and Property DIY about house prices.

I find it unbelievable that generally there's virtually no linkage to Brexit. There seems to be tacit acceptance of the Daily Mail stance that property prices would have dropped anyway as if this is entirely unrelated to the dystopian nightmare.

The only real mention on the property price thread is about brexit scare mongering. Although immigration is mentioned too.

It just seems to me language is scarily powerful . The Daily fail promote the expression property bubble -then it's easy to believe all bubbles eventually burst.

However it's ludicrous to think that all the indicators, the pound falling, businesses relocating and closing, house prices falling would have happened anyway. There is a clear cause and effect.

The decision about relinquishing our position as a major player in the most powerful trading union was delegates to voters who were ill equipped to make that decision. It is beyond absurd and unbelievable that anyone considers the property market without considering Brexit as a major factor.

On the Active Mumsnet page there is a survey - under Mumsnet surveys - for those who can vote in UK. In it's heading it does not mention that it is surveying opinion regarding a referendum and different options - please make your opinions known.

lonely I noted that... so much half information going round the daily fail is really not helping people link things up to the bigger picture.

Off to hunt for the survey.

woman11017 · 18/08/2018 11:12

Smile congratulations MrsHoolies and minitrees
Here's the survey link, I'd like to know who the survey is for too Mrs8

I wonder why, mrs8 I have not seen surveys on political views on here before.

Hazardswan · 18/08/2018 11:25

Done.

Wonder if mumsnet would gear up to join a final say/peoplesvote campaign.

If anyone knows of any other surveys where I get to contructively vent let me know! So therapeutic yes I am that stressed it's embarrassing

I could listen to this guy all day. He absolutely wipes the floor with Fromage.

woman11017 · 18/08/2018 11:40

Strange too that a survey about brexit is not in the brexit section, mrs8

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 18/08/2018 12:18

Ah, that explains my current lack of being able to concentrate. Thanks red

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 18/08/2018 12:25

Well done all the mini westminstenders on their results too

DarlingNikita · 18/08/2018 12:28

They won't move it because the Brexit section is mainly inhabited by people who cannot understand the stupidity of Brexit and the survey result will reflect that. There's too many hard facts on the Brexit topic and not enough unicorns.

Thanks Mrsr8. I might try your suggestion of phoning the embassy, though I imagine there might be a good deal of eyeball-rolling at someone who thinks investigating the possibility of a claim to Irish nationality based on ‘everyone said my dad looked a bit Irish!’ Grin. Still, I am that desperate...

Hope the Amsterdam trip goes well. Such a great place for a visit.

ClashCityRocker · 18/08/2018 13:58

Placemat King. 👑

ClashCityRocker · 18/08/2018 13:59

Why oh why is farage coming back?

And why oh why is he getting so much airtime? I mean, now, surely, isn't he just 'a bloke who has strong views on the EU'.

What a dick.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/08/2018 14:57

Farage needs another earner and reason to get his face on the telly,
because his big salary & huge expenses - for never bothering to work - comes to an end on 31 March
