PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

I'm glad but I think we'll need a lot more, 17 million voted to leave, 1 million isn't enough to invalidate it and if it happens & remain wins then we'll probably have to do best out of 3 to make it fair 🤔

It's growing exponentially though. Almost 100,000 further signatures since I signed about half an hour ago. I would expect it to reach several million.

I'm not sure how I feel about this; I am staunchly remain but agree that the point of democracy is that a vote stands however it falls.

THAT SAID - I think that the immediate retraction of the proposed NHS spending and movement of EU and non EU nationals could have changed people's minds who voted Leave for those reasons.

522 signatures in my area! Only 32k or so voted remain and 104K to leave.

I'm gutted that Leave won, but Am not signing. This is not how democracy works. You don't get to keep having another go til you get the outcome you want. The majority voted for Leave, that's what we're stuck with.

What a shame people aren't so passionate about protesting about welfare cuts and the rights of disabled people. Didn't see this reaction when PIP was cut for the disabled.

It was only 100,000 or so when I signed - 900,000 by the time the confirmation email came through - which is when my signature would have been counted.

Whether is achieves its goals or not it sends a clear signal to the politicians that a huge number of people are unhappy about this. .

There won't be another referendum. To do so flies in the face of democracy. The people have voted. You don't like the result. Too bad. Its called DEMOCRACY. We are not in a dictatorship. You can't demand another referendum because you lost!

Honestly, we all knew things were going to get rough when the Tories won, I just never thought it'd get this bad.

Its obvious a lot of people are unhappy about it. All the people that voted remain! Don't need a petition to see that. Bloody hell.

It is an exercise in democracy based on a series of misrepresentations by the Leave campaign, the falsity of which they are now merrily admitting, smug in the expectation that nothing can be done.

In most legal scenarios, if you are conned into something you are given an opportunity to reverse your decision.

This flies in the face of democracy. I voted remain. Not happy with the result, but this petition is just wrong and if it worked sets a dangerous precedent - far more worrying then leaving EU.

Tate, I think 3 rounds is enough 😂 , but in all seriousness we can't invalidate this vote just because we really want to, the only positive I can think of is that by 2020 after we go through some of our worst economic years, there's no way the Tories get re-elected, Labour or the Lib Dems if they're clever enough can get it & then like the Scots are now proposing we can have another referendum.

And if Trump wins over in America, their will be at least one place in this entire planet stupider than the British voter.

Toria - you're right that it is obvious that people are extremely unhappy about the result. The petition gives a focus to that unhappiness and is something tangible which can be used as a basis for action.

We should not be complacent. If there is a chance this petition could have an effect we should use it. What's the loss - a minute of your time?

This just doesn't sit right with me either. However much I didn't like the result it flies in the face of Democracy so I won't sign it.

I'm not sure either. on one hand I've cried at the thought of leaving the eu. my country voted to stay, but the UK as a whole voted leave. that's democracy and if we redo this vote we'll have do everyone of them twice. they should have set an minimum percentages for the leave vote to count 55% or something.

Mycatsabastard I agree, a joke isn't it. Too busy with their middle class existence, drinking their wine in their nice big house, going on their foreign holidays they don't give a toss about the poor. Now we will be leaving the eu and all they may end up in a poor vulnerable position everyone is in uprising.

To those who are concerned about the precedents set in relation to the exercise of democratic rights - this is an exceptional case because of the (now admitted) misrepresentations of the Leave campaign. So the precedent which would be set (if any) is that if politicians grossly mislead the populous, and induce them to vote in a way which they would not have had they known the true position, that vote is null and void.

That is not a bad thing.

If public opinion remains the same, then they get their way. If the public opinion has changed - in the light of the dawning recognition that many will have based their decisions on the fraudulent representations of the Leave campaign - then that is also democracy in action.

jam so you're hoping that we'll get another referendum before we actually leave. Maybe that's why the politicians are saying they are waiting 2 years. hoping to get a change of mind

mycats, it's a complete piss take. People don't give a shit unless they are personally affected. I'm getting bored of the people dressing it up as "poor thick poor people not knowing what they've let themselves in for" too. Where were they when disabled people were losing the money they need to live?

This will cause further social unrest. Have some dignity please.
