PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

Would I say what about a Scottish referendum?

I don't get the argument that the politicians said this was final so we have to stick to it, while the same politicians have already backtracked on the campaign promises.

The straight in/out majority referendum was a bad mistake in the first place and I can't see a happy future now whatever we do. Sad

When David Cameron didnt follow through with his so called promises we could have said well things have changed.... BUT DIDNT

If you truly believe that the result represents the majority view of the British people, what are you concerned about?

But I think a lot of people feel like they have been taken for a fool. And that many, many of us are scared. Scared in a way that we weren't last week. Democracy can still be democracy when you repeat the same question.

I think some people are going through the stages of grief over this.

Here is Nigel Farage's take on a 2nd referendum:

BTW it looks as though Scotland will be heading for a 2nd referendum and if they have one they may well look to leave the UK.

I know I am. I held it together until this afternoon and then broke down in tears of terror.

I'm not ashamed to admit it either. I'm scared.

I wish Scotland all the best. I hope they have a second referendum and I hope they get to stay in the EU, because it's the safest place for them. As much as I love them and want us to stay united.

Obviously over a million people who voted remain are too stupid to realise how democracy works - you vote and the people who have the most votes win - those who voted for the loosing party need to accept that decision.

Nigel Farage says a lot of things, he resigns only to reappear a week later.
He'd conceded defeat by 10.30 on Thursday night, only to un-concede 20 minutes later.
And the powers that be would have told him where to stick his petition anyway.

Over two million, I think you'll find.

I know HereSheComestoSavetheDay, I wish Scotland the best too although will be heartbroken to lose them. I have Scottish family connections as well as German/Irish and feeling I am losing so much of what I hold dear. But if they leave us and stay in the EU I wouldn't blame them one bit.

I am absolutely terrified now of what the future holds; not for me so much but for my DS. I feel that older people by swinging this vote to leave have done a horrible thing to the younger generation; they have truly been shafted and are now faced with living with the consequences for us. And btw I am in my 50s and voted 'remain'.

Scotland is free to have a 2nd referendum if they feel it is appropriate and in the best interests of our country, the same should apply for us.

BTW petition is approaching 2.2 signatures. In less than 2 days, that is huge.

why cant you just bloody accept the result and put your toys back in the pram? FFS.

stop bloody panicking and give it time to settle down.

im sure it would have been left alone had the result gone the other way.

Why this blind sacralisation of democracy??
You shouldn't get to shut down an argument by saying 'it's democracy' - take any basic politics class and you'll see that that can't be a convincing argument to anyone who hasn't been brainwashed into buying into democracy as some sort of secular religion. As a political system applied to every situation it's imperfect and it was certainly IMHO the wrong tack to use for this.

I'm sorry, but incredibly frightening imminent changes to my life make me feel a little panicked.

I'm particularly panicked about losing my job. I don't know how I will keep my house. And my small son. What will happen to him?

I know that our lives are just meant to be collateral for the nebulous Greater Good Greater Britain plan, but I would prefer to just be able to know my son's future was going to be ok.

Report
velourvoyageur · 25/06/2016 20:06

they have truly been shafted ha! yes, exactly.
I'm 22 and my choices have been severely curtailed by this and that's going by the best-case scenario.
But democracy doesn't take the interests of the country into account does it.

Report
Livingtothefull · 25/06/2016 20:07

No I won't 'put my toys back in the pram'; the country is being torn apart by this, are you following the news?

I don't care about this for myself; I am one of the lucky 'baby boomer' generation so will probably be OK. I care about the next generation who have to live with this, who have been shafted by my own contemporaries.

I have a DS with severe disabilities., he will have to live with the consequences of this if it goes downhill. He will have as good (or as bad) a life as his country is able to give him. You don't know how much we have struggled already, and continue to struggle, to ensure he has all the care he needs; now we face that all going down the toilet. Don't you dare tell me not to be upset.

Another remain voter here...but please it just makes us look like dickheads if we have another go at voting. The people who didn't vote had their chance and they should shut up moaning.
We won't be taken seriously as a country if we do things like this.

PutAPlasterOn · 25/06/2016 20:09

I voted to remain and I've signed the petition. I know a lot of people who voted to leave and now that we are have said they wish they voted to remain!!

This ridiculous fucking petition is giving me the rage tonight.

Yeah ok, lets just keep asking the same question until we get the answer that we (the educated ones who know best) want.

And I am 100% remain. But we lost. In a democratic vote. Signing this 'petition' is pathetic. Some of the leave voters were poorly educated? Yes, probably. I expect some of the leave ones were too. They still have the right to vote.

Do I think we should have had a requirement for a larger majority for something with such catastrophic consequences? Hell yes, who doesn't? But that was really a conversation for before the vote don't you think?

It's all a mess, but this is not helping.

I don't care if I am a dickhead, I want to do what I believe to be the right thing for my country. I urge everyone who cares about this to sign the petition.

'We won't be taken seriously as a country'; that ship has sailed, we are a laughing stock already. Nothing much to lose on that score so we may as well do what we feel is right.

My point is that Brexiters don't seem to know what they voted for.

In such a rage I don't know my leave from remain. Hope I didn't do that on the ballot paper. Perhaps it's all my fault.
