PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

Link here:

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

Well... I was actually replying to the poster you were... this statement When the only option is your way or no way - that is fascism.

Mainly as they describe a dictatorship... or tyranny

The widely used definition of Fascism is "Government with the basis of a powerful leader" whereas, Dictatorship is defined as "A type of government where political authority is controlled by an individual or a political entity".

Ah.. ourblanche - I guess that's why a lot of forums use the reply to poster and quote post in your answer formats.. MN's linear style is not always ideal for proper debates where posters refute other individual posts, and that's even worse now there are so many user with numbers usernames, so bolding the poster name is becoming less helpful...

Fascism isn't specific to Germany though and Godwin's law is specific to Nazism/Hitler.

Fascism isn't defined as government with the basis of a powerful leader though - that just isn't correct. Fascism is totalitarian, oppressive and nationalistic.

It was my fault, Schwab. I should have added the quote to my first post.

Gloria... your post was specific to Germany, post Hitler. I was just following your train of thought about the 'fascism' comment. I don't disagree with anything you said or posted. It was an interesting point that everyone complaining about our political system needs to consider when they moan about the referendum, who is allowed to vote, what to do about the results, etc..

Trying to shut down public debate and prevent people from protesting or signing petitions or speaking out against the referendum result is undemocratic, and whilst also not Fascism it is closer to being fascist than continuing to protest and air opposing views despite a referendum, obviously!

Well, I did get that quote from a University political science site, amongst other places.

Fascism as an ideology isn't a dictatorship. Fascist dictatorships exist. Most fascist states are/become dictatorships. But that isn't the root of the ideology.

Apologies. I have been reading the thread asking why kids don't get compulsory politics classes and I enjoyed mine, way back in the 70s.

Smile It's nice not to be faced with a barrage of Grrr and an extended argument over a minor disagreement or misunderstanding. Thanks.

"Government with the basis of a powerful leader" can't be the whole definition of fascism no matter what site it's from though - not every government with a powerful leader is fascist ...Confused

OK... so we do get to play the quibble game Smile

Getting back to the numbers on the petition, this is absolutely priceless: apparently there are over 3000 from the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia, which has a permanent population of zero

Oh, and a quick google shows that Devon Island in Canada is claimed to be the largest uninhabited island in the world ... I wonder how many votes that one's responsible for?? Grin Grin

I'm glad it got to 4 million, I bet lots of other people are too.

But Angela says she wouldn't have us back if we asked now, so I guess it's of symbolic value only :(

Getting a 2nd referendum, is like all the leaders of the Commonwealth counties getting together and voting to become members of "The British Empire". It's just not going to happen.

In that case why are you parroting Boris?

The reality is that you've lost control. Boris has no plan. We have no PM.
No-one knows what the fuck's going on.

What you're going to end up with is pretty much what you had before, but no power.

What, as in "conjugate the verb to go" ? Or maybe, in this case, that should be the verb to leave Wink
