PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

Link here:

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

Well the UK's EU Commissioner Lord Hill has just resigned "what has been done cannot be undone" . Maybe he didn't see the petition?

Musicinthe00ssucks · 25/06/2016 13:05

So I can only assume all of the signatories of this petition would feel happy at the prospect of UKIP and other far right movements gaining momentum in the UK, just like they have done on the continent. If the Government overthrows the result of the referendum, that terrifying prospect is what we could be looking at. The whole reason we are in this mess and out of the EU is because the British voters have not been listened to and had their concerns taken on board. An overthrow of the referendum vote would be the final nail in the coffin for many of the electorate

I have signed. I don't believe that there has been a significant enough majority for this to go through.

It's near enough fifty/fifty.

thedogstinks · 25/06/2016 13:13

I'll eat my hat if they hold another vote.

Chchchchangeabout · 25/06/2016 13:28

I don't think there's any chance of another vote but have signed to register strength of feeling. Both internally and maybe externally if it hits the news.

HereSheComestoSavetheDay · 25/06/2016 13:45

I agree that at least it records the opinion of the 48%. I want Europe to know that I didn't want this.

randomparent · 25/06/2016 13:49

According to the BBC and others, referendums are not legally binding. See the following from the BBC website:

Could MPs block an EU exit?

The referendum result is not legally binding - Parliament still has to pass the laws that will get Britain out of the 28 nation bloc, starting with the repeal of the 1972 European Communities Act.
...
One scenario that could see the referendum result overturned, is if MPs forced a general election and a party campaigned on a promise to keep Britain in the EU, got elected and then claimed that the election mandate topped the referendum one.

Particularly in light of reports that some who voted Leave simply wanted to register a protest but didn't really think that the UK would leave the EU and now regret their votes, I think it is worth a shot to support the petition.

HereSheComestoSavetheDay · 25/06/2016 14:12

And if we were wrong, we can be wrong twice.

Leave voters aren't fussed about costing the UK billions, so another referendum would be a drop in the ocean.

Timetogrowup2016 · 25/06/2016 14:18

I voted remain bit the people have spoken.
Leave won. Now we move on and re build this country.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 25/06/2016 14:25

I wonder if the "remainers" are willing to pay for another referendum?

Lets say a one off payment of a 1 million quid each or all their assets. Or they could always ask the eu for a loan.

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 14:33

And how much do you think it is going to cost in legal and professional fees to negotiate an exit? You could occupy an entire city firm of lawyers for 2years plus. It will cost hundreds of millions.

You are going to bankroll that, you know, unless the decision is re-taken.

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 25/06/2016 14:35

I was wondering who will foot the bill for the whole thing to be re done ?

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 14:37

The by the way your maths is dodgy. Hmm

£1m per each Remainer would be £17 trillion. True cost is closer to £8.35 each.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 25/06/2016 14:39

I was being sarcastic about the 1 million. Hmm

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 14:39

Sorry, that was to Steam.

You can't assume that the Brexiteers will pick up on the obviously incorrect. Wink

Oh for Pete's sake!

Is this what taking competition out of school sport does? We now have whole hosts of people who don't understand win: lose.

As others have said, have some dignity. This is what democracy is. You cannot call for a recount because some of the people who voted against are people you wouldn't invite for tea, or let your kids play with.

And yes, I'd be saying the same no matter what the result had been and it were disgruntled Brexiters doing the hissy fitting.

MustStopAndThinkBeforePosting · 25/06/2016 14:43

I've signed but I genuinely don't think they should actually call a 2nd referendum unless the petition gets 20 million signatures. 17 million voted for leave, 16 million voted remain. 2, 5 or even 10 million out of those 16 million should not have any effect. Only if the results show undeniably that huge numbers of the 17million leavers have changed their minds.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 25/06/2016 14:48

Then I offer my apologies to you GertrudeBelle.

It must be, because the very concept of 'doing it again because we lost' is utterly ridiculous.

WE LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY. THE COUNTRY VOTED DEMOCRATICALLY. THE LEAVE SIDE WON. REMAIN LOST. THERE WILL NOT BE ANOTHER REFERENDUM. THE PM RESPECTED THE DECISION THAT HAS BEEN MADE. THIS IS CALLED LIVING IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY. HTH

People are making themselves look very childish and stupid. With no grace whatsoever.

Great, bring it on, you'll get thrashed even harder Grin

Odd, as it is an undeniable fact that some of the wealthiest areas in England voted Remain!
