Prompted by the repeat showing of their acoustic show on sky, made me watch the DVD which I think was filmed in 1989 or summat, marvelous anyway. Love the Pixies so much, they make me do dancing when drunk, which isn't really a good thing

DaDaDa · 12/11/2007 14:10

The Triffids - Save What You Can

Beautiful, yes. Cheery....?

Only just got into The Trffids recently (clients late so I can wallow in nostalgia a little longer!)

southeastastra · 12/11/2007 14:18

well maybe lyrics not exactly cheery

CatIsSleepy · 12/11/2007 14:50

i remember McCarthy too

The Chills oh yes...Pink Frost was one of my favourite songs for a long time

Blue Aeroplanes hmm my boyfriend at uni was very into them and bought me lots of their albums...I even have a copy of Bop Art somewhere which is supposed to be fairly rare. I sort of liked them but could never get into whatisname's (Gerald someone?) way of 'singing' though. like young rodney better.Sorry I can't really remember their names any more! feel like I'm talking complete gibberish

Dinosaur · 12/11/2007 16:58

Have enjoyed nostalgia-fest induced by this thread!

Anyone remember Belly? A kind of Throwing Muses spin-off?

aDadGoneMad · 12/11/2007 17:04

gerard erm someone CatisSleepy!

Rodney was the sort of child-prodigy on guitar wasn't he? He seemed to be about 14 forever.

I remember the name Belly, Dinosaur but not their music.

aDadGoneMad · 12/11/2007 17:06

it was my flatmate who was more of a blue aeroplanes fan and we schleped up to the mean fiddler in harlseden to see them a few times. Great little venue that was.

Dinosaur · 12/11/2007 17:09

Yes, I liked the Mean Fiddler.

God, I haven't been to a gig for so long now...

southeastastra · 12/11/2007 17:09

Wisteria · 12/11/2007 17:34

Just thought I'd let you know that I have unearthed a rare (acc to internet) compilation from my loft on the back of this thread (the one I was on about earlier) it was Creation 1988 - Doing it for the Kids tour charity concert thing they did, and have managed to get it onto a cd - still amazed at my computer geekiness!

There's some proper jangly gems on there; The Jasmine Minks, House of Love, Biff Bang Pow, Heidi Berry, Felt, The Jazz Butcher, Momus, Primal Scream, The Weather Prophets and many more

Thank you everyone, who knows how long it would have sat there otherwise!!

cerys · 12/11/2007 17:43

Wisteria, I went to the Square Club once or twice but can't remember much about it! This would have been about 1988.

rantinghousewife · 12/11/2007 19:30

Wow, this took off, didn't it, remember The Pale Saints, saw them 3 or 4 times, have a Field Mice album and a couple of Kitchens album (shiver was my favorite KOD song, saw Curve and Dinosaur JR.
Kudos to anyone who remembers either the Dentists or The Love Blobs, or am I the only sad sap who owns their records.

Wisteria · 12/11/2007 20:34

Yes - never heard of them rant!

Wow a fellow square clubber.. I knew there'd be one out there! I was going from 1989-91, I heard it closed down shortly afterwards, can't say I'm surprised as I always thought it aws a bit of a fire trap!

misstimms · 12/11/2007 20:50

I cried when I read that they were splitting up..I LOVE the pixes, played here comes your man at our wedding recently and was overjoyed to see more than a few of our lovely guests dancing to their sheer brillance!!

rantinghousewife · 12/11/2007 20:57

Where was the square club Wisteria?
Got to say I love this thread, brings back some good memories.
Am betting you remember Chapterhouse though

havalina · 12/11/2007 21:03

Bloody hell this gained a lot of posts didn't it? Shame I can't indulge in the nostalgia fest, my sis got me into the pixies (10 years older). She went to portsmouth uni and reports many tales. Apparently she was on some kind of union committee and saw nirvana and tad and god knows how many bands for free.

Have heard of lot of the bands but get confused, was Tanya Donnelly in the breeders for a bit or did I imagine that/

OP posts:
rantinghousewife · 12/11/2007 21:04

Tanya Donnelly was in the Breeders, along with Kim and Kelley Deal. She was also in Belly.
Oh and saw Nirvana too

havalina · 12/11/2007 21:05

Btw love Frank Black too, have seen him 4 times, love all of his albums (mostly with the catholics), never got on with the Breeders for some reason, like cannonball though.

OP posts:
havalina · 12/11/2007 21:07

Saw a random video with Tanya in, loved it, think she was solo, but never really got into Kristin Hersh too much, although she is rated, will check her out eventually lol.

OP posts:
rantinghousewife · 12/11/2007 21:16

Saw Kristin Hersh at The Cambridge Theatre in Piccadily around the time she released Hips and Makers, she was utterly amazing. It was just her and a guitar and a man with a violin. You should check her out, she is very good.

misstimms · 12/11/2007 21:23

love this post!!! much more entertaining than the other post currently on

Love Ride, still trying to convince ds although he does like twisterella.. Curve were another favourite and was very fond of slowdive and moose..the pixes were my release from my feet!

btw weren't the family cat a reading band? for some reason I remember the name

rantinghousewife · 12/11/2007 21:28

Can't remember where they were from, I've got a couple of their singles and an album, Tom Verlaine. Am quite impressed there are a few people on here who remember them.

rantinghousewife · 12/11/2007 21:29

And omg, slowdive and Moose (hee hee hee), you guessed it, saw them too.
