How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

Nothing ,but we live in rural France. In the summer there is a mobile pizza van that stops about 15km from us .

Passthecake30 · 21/03/2021 16:06

Pre Covid we’d probably have one meal out and one takeaway a month. Now we have a takeaway whenever I declare that it’s timeBlush I’m the one who meal plans, shops and cooks and every now and then I’ve had enough of that. Usually every 3 weeks or so unless there’s a special occasion or I’m particularly cheesed off. Takeaways aren’t cheap for 2 adults and 2 preteens - fish n chips £25, dominos £45, kebabs and chips £40, full on Turkish £60, Chinese £40.

Darbs76 · 08/04/2021 21:05

Maybe once every 1-2 months. Definitely not every week.

Chasingsquirrels · 08/04/2021 21:11

We got one from a local pub in Feb half term, just pub food.
Before that I think it was a chippy tea in Mar-20 pre lockdown when ds1's new girlfriend was over and I couldn't be bothered to cook.
Oh, we got one Aug-20 when we hired a cruiser for a couple of days on the river.

Pre-covid DP & I probably ate out a couple of times a month when my dc's were with their dad. Rarely got takeaways though, just the occasional chippy tea.

merryhouse · 08/04/2021 21:42

Some years ago we had one every Friday. Alternated Indian and f&c. Collection because they're both quite close. Occasional kebab delivered for the adults (when the children ate elsewhere).

Then we moved to every other Friday, with home-made pizza the alternate weeks.

Then we changed to every four weeks, pizza the others.

Changes made partly for health, partly financial reasons.

In the last year we've had Indian twice, fish & chips once.

I miss it.

Singlenotsingle · 08/04/2021 21:45

Probably once every six months or so. We have a takeaway filled baked potato, or maybe fish and chips.

Thomasina2021 · 08/04/2021 21:55

Zero practically

Maybe a drive thru McD’s rarely, twice a year

ODFOx · 08/04/2021 22:59

We order an Indian or Chinese meal once a month. It's usually about £10-20 per head plus delivery.
We tend to go a bit mad to make the most of the fact I'm not cooking, so go for dish s that I couldn't cook at home.
We briefly toyed with ordering Sunday dinner from a local pub, but didn't keep it up as it was nowhere near as good as homemade.

Overall I think we have less takeaway than before lockdown . Certainly our tolerance for 'cheap and cheerful' has gone, and the teens are much more discerning.
Takeaway has become more of a treat whereas before it was just a convenience when I was too shattered to cook.

MidnightMeltdown · 10/04/2021 15:54

Probably twice a month on average. Would love to order every week but I don't want all the extra calories!

cheeseismydownfall · 10/04/2021 22:01

Nothing! Never get take out. We live rurally though so the choice is pretty dire and unless we were literally incapacitated I'd rather eat food we had cooked ourselves.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 10/04/2021 22:04

We sometimes buy a chippy tea around payday. It usually comes to about £25 for five of us

catatecheese · 10/04/2021 22:09

We only ever get takerway for birthdays ( covid times normally we would go out). Otherwise never! So expensive Shock why would you have that 2 X a week?? Also really unhealthy. If we want pizza we buy it from superman and pop in the oven and that's what I consider a treat/ lazy meal.

earsup · 10/04/2021 22:12

maybe fish and chips once a month if that but i go to a very nice place and its pricey...dont like chinese food and can cook nice indian food myself ....total spend is about £11 a month...i like skate...pizza is a total waste of money....over 800% mark up !!

SelkieBeag · 10/04/2021 22:14

Too much. Me and my two teens. I work ft and they never eat anything i cook. But im getting stricter now. Once a week

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 10/04/2021 22:19

Once per month usually, plus the end of terms/half-terms & lockdown birthdays.

But I do have takeaway lunch 1 x week. (Pret/Costa/Wenzels/Greggs)
Started it in lockdown 1 when dd2 went back to school and it was just the 2 of us as a treat because she was so good & still do it now I'm wfh. Compared to Costa & breakfast & lunch at work everyday I'm still saving a fortune.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 10/04/2021 22:26

Once a week at the moment. Pre covid we either ate out or had takeaway every Saturday. We are a family of 4 , 2 adults and 2 older teens so adult appetites. Over the course of a month would be around £ 150. This is our only extravagance and we are all very slim.

RoseMartha · 10/04/2021 22:26

Generally £0

Special occasion if at a family birthday, i will treat kids to fish and chips or a pizza dependant on their choice.

I cant eat takeaways due to multiple food intolerances.

needadvice54321 · 10/04/2021 22:37

We have a take away most weekends, or 3 out of 4 with a meal out on the fourth when allowed!! It's not great for us, we know, but the rest of the week we eat homemade food, are tee total (well I am, DH has a few beers a year!) and don't smoke etc

mamaduckbone · 10/04/2021 22:38

Usually only about once a month, maybe a bit more often during lockdown. We had Turkish tonight which was £38 for 4 of us (hungry teen/tween boys eat more than me) and we've had fish and chips this month as well as it was half term. No more than £80-100 a month for 4, usually nearer £30-£40.

Bellabelloo · 10/04/2021 22:42

Once a week, but normally something 'nice' so probably £50-£100 between the 2 of us. We'll eat out more though when we're allowed.

alexdgr8 · 10/04/2021 22:44

you husband is right, and it's not a good habit to get into.

Catawaul · 10/04/2021 22:44

Never. I do buy supermarket frozen pizzas etc

Shezlon · 10/04/2021 22:45

Living rurally makes a big difference to this for us. No one delivers here so it's not so convenient if you have to go and drive to get it yourself. We've had takeaway a handful of times in the past year, each time it costs around £40 for 5.
Prior to covid we'd probably get it once a month on average.

supermum87 · 11/04/2021 08:31

On average one a month and that includes a McDonald's for the kids. An Indian/Chinese/pizza for us all, possibly once every 3 months! I'm always disappointed after I've had one. I normally only ever enjoy them when I'm hungover. However I do love sushi and I'd love to get that as a takeaway more often but DH isn't a fan.

Not to sound like curtain twitchers, but for a while we seemed to always see our neighbours comings and going's and we figured as a family of 5 there are averaging about 10 takeaways a week!! This includes McDonald's breakfasts. It's unreal and I always think how can they afford it!?

Darbs76 · 11/04/2021 08:37

Say once a month I guess, sometimes less. My kids prefer home cooked (can be a pain at times). But I’m saving at the moment so happy not to have to pay for a weekly takeaway as I think that’s too much (unless you’ve got plenty of spare cash)
