How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

We only eat takeout once every other month or so. So probably £15 as spend around 20-30 when we do.

OhhhPeee · 27/06/2020 18:44

We’ve just calculated that we’ve spent between £300-£400 per month on takeaway over lockdown. Lots of our local independent restaurants have really embraced it and we’ve had some great food from old favourites and newfound hidden gems (we’ve had some absolute dross from dodgy takeaways, but few and far between).

We would’ve spent the money anyway, on meals out, pub lunches, popping in Pret or Costa or Greggs or whatever. It’s been mostly enjoyable but terrible for our waistlines! We’re drawing a line under it after this weekend. Definitely the best thing about lockdown though!

Justkeeprollingalong · 27/06/2020 18:46

Zero, we find them very expensive and not brilliant! Might have fish and chips once a year. If we really can't be arsed to cook we'd get a Taste the Difference ready meal from Sainsbury's, taste better and far better value; but even that is probably only twice a year.

RaininSummer · 27/06/2020 18:47

Don't get them at all. Always so disappointed.

PhoneLock · 27/06/2020 18:48

Nothing. Nobody delivers here and I can't be bothered with a 20+ mile round trip to get one myself.

novacaneforthepain · 27/06/2020 18:49

We easily do 3 takeaways a week, and 3 lunches like McDonald's or nandos a week.

No idea how much we spend but I'm assuming probably more than £120 a week

Oh shit, That's where all my money is going 🤔

Shock what type of takeaway did you order? I hope it’s nice.
whiteblue · 27/06/2020 18:50

Zero. But only because we live overseas in an area that we can only get things like Pizza Hut, McDonald's etc which we dislike.
Back in the uk though we'd probably get something twice a month from independent places......so maybe £70/80 monthly.

Shinebright72 · 27/06/2020 18:51

I don’t really order takeaways as such now and again I may order a Chinese and it’s no more than £15. I do prefer to dine out though. Fascinating how people order take outs every week.

That's more than I spend on groceries for a week!

Redcrayons · 27/06/2020 18:52

We used to have takeaway once a week when I was a teenager. Usually Chinese but sometimes the chippy.

I do it once a month, mostly for financial reasons but also there isn’t much choice round here. Chippy, Chinese, kebab shop and Indian. Although quite a few restaurants have been doing takeaway in the last month so hopefully that might continue when we go back to normal.

Cauterize · 27/06/2020 18:52

Too much on Dominos really, 2-3 times a month but I never pay full price, only ever get a deal or use coupon so maybe £60

McDonald's a couple of times a month say £20?

formerbabe · 27/06/2020 18:53

I know lots of people who routinely get a takeaway once a week.

I find it a huge waste of money...in fact, if I'm ever tempted, I look at clothing websites and think I could buy myself a new dress or top instead.

Last time I got a takeaway I was ill with flu and couldn't cook for the dc so ordered them a pizza for dinner

Perro · 27/06/2020 18:54

We spend £30 on a takeaway every 3-4 weeks.

PegasusReturns · 27/06/2020 18:56

About £100 per week during lockdown - partly because I’m so bored of the monotony of making all our meals.

Partly because as a PP said a lot of our local restaurants are doing really great dine at home options to keep these best afloat and I’m supporting where I can.

Outside of lockdown we tend to eat out 2-3 times a week so overall we’re saving.

Lindy2 · 27/06/2020 18:57

We usually have 1 a week too. Especially during lockdown where we can't go out to restaurants.

Friday night is take away night for us and everyone looks forward to it. We vary what we have so it could be fish and chips, Chinese, Italian, Japanese or anything that we fancy really. Several local pubs have switched to doing takeaway food for now so we've bought from them too as a way of trying to financially support them through the current situation.

I like to cook too but it's a nice treat not to have to.

KitKat1985 · 27/06/2020 18:57

We generally get a takeaway for us each week as a Saturday night treat (2 adults, and 2 young kids who usually share an adult meal). We tend to get fish and chips / something from the local burger place which comes to about £20-25 for all us each. Occasionally we might get a Chinese or Indian which is more like £30-35 for all of us. So on average I guess we spend £120-ish a month on takeaway food. I appreciate it's a luxury but me and DH both work full time and can afford it, and it's nice to have a treat as a family once a week.

8dayweek · 27/06/2020 18:59

I feel awful looking at this. I'd say we have a take-away 4-5 times a week... and I also usually buy lunch each day and at least one take-away coffee.

It's generally because we're incredibly time poor - however at the start of lockdown we had a lot more home cooked food (albeit via the extremely stressful route of scouring supermarkets for bloody anything after a 10hr+ day...).

I do get into a groove of doing lunches daily every few months. It usually when I'm stressed that it slips.

unicornparty · 27/06/2020 19:00

Every weekend. Usually £20 ish per week

RedskyAtnight · 27/06/2020 19:00

Very rarely have takeaway. Maybe twice a year? About £20-£25 each time.

Surprised that many can afford/justify it every week.
But then I was surprised when it came out ear the start of the lockdown that 30% of food consumed is from sources outside of the house. So maybe lots are.

Buckingham1988 · 27/06/2020 19:00

I'd see that as unhealthy and would not be a treat. Once a month maximum in this house.

sassysoul · 27/06/2020 19:01

Blushat least once a week, just out of laziness really and not wanting to cook every night. I've started batch cooking so hopefully that will help. I'm happy for it to be a weekend treat and no more but at the moment it's definitely at least once a week

Afishcallledbob · 27/06/2020 19:01

About £25 once a month on pizza for me and three kids. Never had takeaway growing up so don't tend to think of ordering very often.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 27/06/2020 19:01

About once every 4 - 6 weeks normally. We don’t eat meat and most of the usual takeaways near us have limited or just not very exciting veggie options. During lockdown though loads of nice restaurants that don’t usually do takeout/delivery have been so over the last two months we’ve been getting a delivery probably weekly. It’s not cheap though - anything from €35 to €60 for two adults and two dc!

Growing up we never had takeaway. Chips occasionally if we went to the seaside (so maybe twice a year!) but until we were earning our own money in our teens, takeaway was unheard of in my parents house.
