How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

Can't remember the last time we got a takeaway. Three years ago?!

Asdf12345 · 02/02/2021 22:11

Probably once every three months or so for us.

Watermelonsugar2 · 02/02/2021 22:12

Every Friday night! Spend between £10-£30 depending on whether it’s chip shop, Indian or pizza. We both hate cooking, are exhausted from work by Friday night and can afford it, so think why not? At the moment it’s one of the only treats to look forward to each week when everything else to do is closed!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 02/02/2021 22:15

We dont have them as regularly as weekly or even monthly. We have had more than usual during lock down, maybe every 2 months, rather than twice a year. Spend would be £25-40 depending on what we go for

HeronLanyon · 02/02/2021 22:18

Pre Covid maybe £40 a month. One Indian takeaway place.
Covid zéro. For some reason the idea of eating food someone else has cooked packed and then delivered doesn’t seem enticing.
I too wasn’t brought up with takeaways so it isn’t something I think of very often.
Eat out a lot (well used to).

Sleepyquest · 02/02/2021 22:19

@Fileexplorerrrr

Wayyyy too much! Probably 3/4 times a week which may include a lunchtime treat of pastries, sandwiches and coffee from a local bakery once a week. We treat it as a a perk for working from home.

We usually always have a Chinese on a Friday and then maybe, apart from the lunchtime takeaway, 2 more throughout the week.

I hate cooking (although cook for my child earlier in the evening) and me and my partner settle down later with a takeaway as we are working late into the evening due to homeschooling during the day.

Every week we say we need to stop the habit but we never do! 🤦🏻‍♀️ It probably costs us £350 at least a month but it’s the health side that worries me.

You sound like us! Glad we aren't the only ones Grin

Thanks File

That's interesting because I honestly didn't know pizza in particular cost that much.

My mum is very bored and talking about getting a pizza delivery one night from some new posh place nearby. I doubt she's got that kind of price in mind.

I really like Aldi sourdough pizza. It might not be posh but it's yum and they do some interesting toppings, though I'm quite happy with a traditional one

BlueThistles · 02/02/2021 22:20

Zero

We never had takeaways or ate out when I was growing up, absolutely never. It still feels like quite a big deal to me so we do it v rarely!

Pre covid we would maybe have a meal out as a couple once every couple of months and almost never as a family. We would get takeaway max a couple of times a year and then only really if friends staying for eg. I don't think we've ever had proper takeaway pizza! Happy meals less of a rarity but still infrequent, like less than once a month, but they've saved us on long journeys and late returns from day trips a few times.

We had takeaway for dc lockdown birthday as there was almost no other way of making it feel celebratory but we spend over £60! So definitely not something we will do again for a while! (was delicious though and lasted 2 days!)

I actually love Indian and Chinese and could happily consume more junk too but once a week would feel too often and I would put on weight quickly. Overall it's the cost that is the off putting detail. When yo can make a quick pasta meal for pence it's hard to justify tens of pounds in one meal for no reason in our finances.

Literallynoidea · 02/02/2021 22:28

We do it once or twice a month. Family of five.

If we get fish and chips it's £30. If we do Indian it's at least double that.

Katie1784 · 02/02/2021 22:31

We might get one takeaway maybe once in 2-3 months. I don't really fancy them in times of Covid to be honest; they're not known for good food hygiene at the best of times and it's clear that mask wearing compliance in our local ones is not good at the moment.

Fileexplorerrrr · 02/02/2021 22:44

@Sleepyquest .. I’m glad you posted that. I’m so embarrassed reading the other posts. I thought we were the only ones too 🤦🏻‍♀️

@LunaHeather Pizza is ridiculously expensive, considering how much you can buy it for in the supermarket. I always cringe when we order it but I think we’ve just got a bit stuck in a rut.
This is just Dominoes prices too so I don’t know how much it would cost at somewhere much nicer.
Thanks for mentioning the Aldi sourdough pizza. I’ve not seen those so I’ll have a look next time I’m in there as love sourdough pizzas.

evouk · 02/02/2021 22:54

£50

LunaHeather · 02/02/2021 22:55

File I thought Dominos was cheap!

Anyway, stick some of the Aldi ones in the freezer, you'll like them.

I would be the size of a house if I had lots of takeaway, but I probably know lots of people who have them and manage to stay slim.

LetItGoGo · 02/02/2021 22:56

Zero
Not everyone does it.
Honestly we have decided we'd rather have beans on toast.

BigButtons · 02/02/2021 22:58

Zero. Far too expensive in these unpredictable times .

PositiveLife · 02/02/2021 23:32

Too much Blush, probably 2-3 times a week.
In my defence, I'm a single parent working full-time and both kids have food issues. I just can't always face making multiple meals after a long day at work. The other thing that sometimes happens is something going wrong at work so I don't finish in time to do the cooking I'd planned.
I don't like that I'm eating unhealthy stuff so much but tbh I'd really struggle mentally if I didn't do it Sad. It's the one thing I find really hard about being on my own - nobody to just step in and start the cooking if I'm running late, etc.

DianaT1969 · 02/02/2021 23:35

Never. It's just as easy (and much cheaper) to put to put a good quality frozen lasagne or pizza in the oven.
I also think it's lazy not to walk down and pick it up yourself. Motorbikes buzzing around all night just contribute to pollution unnecessarily.

DuaLipaSuction · 03/02/2021 20:24

At the moment it's about £25 a month, usually a bit more as we tend to get Macdonalds in the days when the DC had activities.

Ikora · 04/02/2021 02:37

Usually once every 6 to 8 weeks, I’m just not hugely keen on takeaway food as too much fat is used. Haven’t had one since covid reared it’s head either.

I cook a roast and once a week and the rest of the days are usually Chinese food.

wirldsgonemad · 04/02/2021 03:44

Once a week, £15 pw.

bailey999 · 04/02/2021 21:51

About £500 in January Blush it is absolutely shameful, however there are 7 of us and we all had covid so I just did what I could to get by.

WonkyCactus · 04/02/2021 21:57

Spent about £18 on fish and chips for 2 back in the summer. Other than that, nothing! We just buy pizzas/Chinese meals from the supermarket when we fancy them.

BigPaperBag · 11/02/2021 17:12

We don’t have them often so when we do it’s a blow out. It was a special family birthday last week so we spent £85 on Chinese for 5 of us, I don’t regret a thing 😂

user1471523870 · 11/02/2021 17:18

I think about £40 a month as we order the odd Indian/burger/sushi once a month on average. Sometimes it's twice, sometimes we go months without.
But I am sure I am well below the average! I have nothing against takeaways but we like cooking and eating well, so we keep take aways for special treats or nights when there is no nice food in the house or we can't be bothered to cook....
We used to order more in the past but I feel the quality has gone down, here were we live, and there is less temptation let's say.
