How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

Not that much. Fish and chips is about £20 for 4 of us a few times a year and we very occasionally buy a Chinese or Indian takeout. But that is nearer £50 with four adults (DC are late teens). I quite like meal deals. Waitrose Indian meal deal is £10 for two people but there's usually loads left over for lunch the next day.

Yewrobin · 02/02/2021 21:32

About once a month - either pizza £25 or something from the fish and chip shop £15 .... might have an Indian takeaway every 3/4 months nearer £50

Indecisivelurcher · 02/02/2021 21:35

Zero. Usually have a take away for birthdays so twice a year, maybe anniversary another one. Might get fish & chips once every 3 or 4 months maybe.

Amammai · 02/02/2021 21:36

We have a take away every Friday. My husband would happily have one more often! A McDonald’s on top would be only maybe once per month as a lunch time treat with my son. Other take always are just for me and my husband - it is definitely our thing that makes us feel it’s the end of the week. We vary between pizza, Indian, Chinese or chipotle. 15-25 each week so max 100 per month. I think each to their own - spend your own money as you wish.

LOTM · 02/02/2021 21:38

Take away curry or pizza maybe twice a year. I prefer my own cooking.

PrawnPower · 02/02/2021 21:40

Very rarely. If we do it's fish and chips (we live at the seaside). We prefer home cooking or to eat out in restaurants. I used to love a thin and crispy dominos pepperoni pizza 🍕 but there aren't any where we live now so it's been a very long time since I've had one. Fancy one now!The cost is extortionate though.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 02/02/2021 21:41

We live in a big city absolutely surrounded by take away and delivery options, I could probably choose from 100 different places within a 2 mile radius of me which offer free delivery. If not more.

In non Covid times we might have a takeaway once every 6 to 8 weeks. Once a week is an abnormally frequent number I think, for a family with children who need to keep an eye on their food budget.

Since Covid, and a much needed tightening of our belts for financial reasons, we have had four takeaways since last March. Three of them for birthday treats.

Hotcuppatea · 02/02/2021 21:43

Hardly ever. Occasionally go to the chippy (its a really good Greek one).

Quornflakegirl · 02/02/2021 21:45

Once a month at most for us so between £20-£30.

CookieDoughKid · 02/02/2021 21:45

Family of 4, once every two months. About £40. I love take outs and would have them more often but prefer eat meals cooked from home due to health reasons.

LunaHeather · 02/02/2021 21:50

We didn't have this growing up

In my 20s, maybe once every couple of months I'd go by the chippy, worked crazy hours

In my 30s and 40s, never. I can't get past the prices.
I'm not criticising them, they have to make a profit, but I can't bear the idea of spending so much on food.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 02/02/2021 21:50

Not a normal weekly thing in our house. Special occasions only
Grew up rurally and it wasn't really an option. I can actually remember the first time I had a KFC delivery as a kid when we visited relatives in Manchester and I thought it was amazing.

I guess we do have a 'treat' kind of dinner on a Saturday night but usually the treat will be watching a movie whilst eating/ having a nice dessert. Stuff that I am crap at cooking myself like Indian and Thai I would be more likely to buy a posh ready meal than get a takeaway.

Happyfamily123 · 02/02/2021 21:50

Payday treat for 5 x £40 chinese!

daisydoodle11 · 02/02/2021 21:52

Far too much! Actually embarrassed after reading some of these.... I'm not the best cook though and I'm a fatty who enjoys a takeaway 🤣

daisypond · 02/02/2021 21:53

Never. There’s a huge number where I live but we never use them. we never had takeaways growing up either.

HurricaneBitch · 02/02/2021 21:53

One a week, I'd have it much less but we've got into the habit and I have teenagers so they moan. It's mostly the local pizza place, so about £20 a week and that's for 4 of us. Then we get something more special for birthdays, usually a restaurant delivery.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 02/02/2021 21:53

I know this is snobby but I can't understand the appeal of a MacDonalds at all. If I want a burger it would be more like a GBK or 5 guys one that I'd want.

Fileexplorerrrr · 02/02/2021 21:54

Wayyyy too much! Probably 3/4 times a week which may include a lunchtime treat of pastries, sandwiches and coffee from a local bakery once a week. We treat it as a a perk for working from home.

We usually always have a Chinese on a Friday and then maybe, apart from the lunchtime takeaway, 2 more throughout the week.

I hate cooking (although cook for my child earlier in the evening) and me and my partner settle down later with a takeaway as we are working late into the evening due to homeschooling during the day.

Every week we say we need to stop the habit but we never do! 🤦🏻‍♀️ It probably costs us £350 at least a month but it’s the health side that worries me.

LunaHeather · 02/02/2021 21:56

File " It probably costs us £350 at least a month but it’s the health side that worries me."

I'm curious, how many takeaways would that be and for how many people?

justanotherneighinparadise · 02/02/2021 21:57

I get the kids a happy meal each once a month. So I think that’s around £8? Can’t remember.

foxhat · 02/02/2021 21:57

I don't think most people get it once week. We do around once a month.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 02/02/2021 22:03

I love a Chinese or an Indian take away but a lot of other stuff we've tried is just disappointing.
Fish and Chips is only nice at the seaside
Pizza doesn't seem a lot better out of the box than out of the freezer
Even KFC has never lived up to my memory of it as a child.
The food is often lukewarm and has to be reheated which is Ok with a curry but microwaved chips are a grim thing.
I sort of want to like takeaway cos there's very little else to do but mostly I actually don't.
I much preferred cafes, restaurants or food vans and probably spent more on those kind of food treats.

yaybacktoschool · 02/02/2021 22:03

Once a month - 6 weeks ish approx £30.
Takeaway food is, on the whole, not a good choice health wise, so wouldn't want to have it every week personally for me.

Fileexplorerrrr · 02/02/2021 22:04

@LunaHeather

Lunchtime bakery (myself, partner & son)
£15

Pizza (myself and partner)
£35/40

Chinese (myself, partner & adult son)
£40

KFC (myself, partner & younger son occasionally)
£25

It’s embarrassing writing that out and seeing how much we have takeaway but it’s just convenient.

In normal times we’d go out to eat so we’ve just opted for takeaways instead during these not so normal times.

Athinginitself · 02/02/2021 22:06

I reckon once a fortnight usually about £20 for 2 of us either a curry, pizza or korean. Whilst in lockdown probably a bit more often to break the weeks up a bit.
