How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

Once a week, £15 ish a time so approx £60 a month. It sounds a lot when you put it like that!

CeibaTree · 11/04/2021 08:42

Used to be once a month or so, but the past year while there hasn't been anything else to do/spend money on we've been getting one per week at a cost of £25-40 per time. When normal life resumes we'll have to stop that habit!

fizbosshoes · 11/04/2021 08:43

We get a takeaway maybe 4 or 5 times a year - probably spending about £40, and similarly maybe 4 Macdonald's a year. Weve had 1 indian takeaway this year and I'm taking kids for first maccy d of the year on Monday. The last one I had was before xmas but a workmates got it for me so kids missed out!

JensonsAcolyte · 11/04/2021 08:45

Absolutely loads in lockdown.

This week we’ve had a Chinese midweek to celebrate dd getting a job, £55.

And DH and I had a posh takeaway from a local Michelin starred restaurant last night, £75.

We often get a family takeaway on a Friday night which can be anything from £30 kebabs to £70 curry.

LemonRoses · 11/04/2021 08:47

Only when we’re on holiday in U.K. so maybe four or five times a year. The cost depends on numbers and what we have.
Fish and chip for two is about ten pounds, I think. An Indian feast for six/eight more likely about £140. I’m vague because my husband usually pays.
I think about £350 a year probably.

Mintjulia · 11/04/2021 08:54

Nothing.

I've never paid for anything to be delivered. We live 4 miles out of town and the house is hard to find. Same for takeaways. I can make something in the time it takes to order, wait, drive into town, collect & drive home. It's not worth the bother.

I have got a table booked for May 19th though Smile. I can't wait!

honkytonkheroe · 11/04/2021 09:03

If I wasn't on a diet, about once a month. It'll cost between £20-£40 depending on what we get.

MaverickDanger · 11/04/2021 09:14

At the moment, it’s been around 3 times a month, up from once a month.

Probably been like that since January which coincided with DS being born...definitely blaming him.

Probably spending £70 a month atm.

yellowdenim · 11/04/2021 09:15

We go through phases. Sometimes we don’t have one for months, in normal times we far prefer eating out over takeaways.

At the moment we’re spending about £35-40 a week on a curry or Turkish for 2 adults and 2 kids. So £150ish a month but we’ll get bored of them soon and restaurants open on Monday Grin

RoseZinfandel · 11/04/2021 09:25

Since lockdown we have swapped eating out for takeaway.
It's for birthdays and other special occasions normally, but we might get the odd one "just because" during the school holidays too.

Probably evens out to around once a month, a bit more during the summer holidays, as we like to get fish and chips and eat it outside on a long sunny evening.

Fish and chips is quite affordable (because everyone prefers fishcake or battered sausage, and we share large portions of chips rather than buying one each, which is much cheaper). Probably £20 or so for a family of 4, or £25 with a drink.
Other deliveries probably £50+ for the 4 of us.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 11/04/2021 09:36

Just checked Deliveroo and last ordered from there (sushi) in March and UberEats was Jan (also sushi).

Most takeaway food round here is greasy Chinese 🤢, pizza, Indian, burgers, chicken wings or kebabs.

I don’t often eat any of those and if I do, I can make better myself.

Neonprint · 11/04/2021 09:47

@Bluntness100

Surprised at how many people, call it a “treat” . To me no food is a treat and when we have a takeaway it’s just another meal, it’s no more a “treat“ than any other meal we choose to eat.
I know this is an old thread. But are you honestly claiming you don't get that people think of food as a treat? Or do you just wnat to appear really virtuous?
SelkieBeag · 11/04/2021 09:53

yeh, a big back of food from thai camile, nobody will convince me that's not a lovely treat. But enough for the three of us is 50 euro!

but a big pizza and chips with garlic sauce midweek, that's less than 20 euro so I have two different types of ''treat''. the latter is the treat of not cooking, not thinking about dinner.

marplemead · 11/04/2021 09:57

We might order a takeaway once every few months. We can't really afford it, and hate being disappointed especially as we both can cook well.

Pre-covid when we had way more disposable income, we would eat out a few times a week. It always felt worth the money to go to a nice restaurant and eat something we wouldn't be able to cook ourselves. Takeaways are just not the same, but can see why other people might like them.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 11/04/2021 09:58

We used to spend a fortune probably £100 or more a weekend. We would hardly cook at the weekend, and we ate out a lot too. Now not so much. We still probably spend more than most, but just sick of being disappointed in the quality of the food, and obviously can't go out to restaurants at the moment. I must have been the instigation for this though because we stopped getting them so often when I became pregnant and went off spicy food and pizzas, and there's not much else to chose from here.

lubeybooby · 11/04/2021 10:00

Nothing really as only one restaurant delivers here. I think we've had it twice in three years

inappropriateraspberry · 11/04/2021 10:07

0n average, £0 - we live rurally, no one delivers and we can't be bothered driving to collect anything. No McDonalds etc close by either.
I'd rather spend my money I. Other things and am always amazed at how much people spend on takeaways and eating out.
May grab a pasty or sandwich when out but don't class that as a takeaway!
Very rarely we'll pick up fish and chips, about 5 times a year?

DuesToTheDirt · 11/04/2021 10:14

Costs over £40 for an Indian or Chinese takeaway for 3/4 of us, so it certainly isn't every week. Mainly for birthdays or other celebrations, or when I get fed up of cooking, so maybe once every 2-3 months.

We never get takeaway pizza, I don't see the point when we can make pizza ourselves or get ones from the supermarket. As vegetarians we never get McDonalds, fish & chips or KFC.

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 11/04/2021 10:32

DH and I get a takeaway every Friday night and watch something funny on TV. We have no social life other than that as we have 3 small kids including 1 with alot of special needs, so it feels nice to have our Friday night. We both look forward to it all week. I budget €100 a month to it and for us it's money well spent. Usually get the kids a McDonald's or KFC once or twice a month.

Dugee · 11/04/2021 10:38

Payday treat here too. We used to go out to dinner on my pay day and DPs pay day but since Covid we have ordered takeaway from our favourite restaurants. So 2 x takeaways per month at £30 - £40 each time.

We have also been getting a Simply Cook box £9.99 a month for four recipes. We cook one per weekend, just to vary our meals. I've enjoyed these.

Neonprint · 11/04/2021 17:29

All these people amazed at the money others spend on takeaway. Do you normally feel so amazed at the fact others do things differently to you? Or is it just the things you can be judgemental about?

SirDidymus · 21/04/2021 18:28

About once every couple of months or so. But we do buy in a takeaway type meal each week for Sat nights: e.g southern style chicken fillets and oven chips. A few weeks back we went mad and took a trek into the nearest KFC to compare - much prefer the supermarket version so have stuck to that since.

Or we might make chinese takeaway style meals, such as sweet and sour with egg rice.

But we also live rurally and no one delivers so that's a factor. If we had a good Italian style pizzeria nearby I might be tempted by that. But we don't :(

Frazzled2207 · 21/04/2021 18:32

We probably have one every 6-8 weeks. But I know people who have a lot more. Once a week quite a lot IMO but I’m not sure it’s that different to eating out (when restaurants are open!).

Alwayscheerful · 22/04/2021 07:23

Once in a blue moon.
Every 2/3 years we order a takeaway (Chinese) for 12/15 people when we have family visiting from Australia.
Ordinarily i find it faster, less expensive and healthier to cook at home.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 22/04/2021 07:28

In normal times as little as once or twice a year for a family takeaway although the teen might meet her friends in McDonalds regularly. This last year probably once every month or two months. I don't find them good value and prefer to spend money elsewhere.
