Happy birthday Pointless - hope the sun makes an appearance for you Smile

DS has declared he wants a laptop for Xmas! Part of me thinks it's a good idea as he's in year 6 and getting a lot of research/presentation type of homework. But the other frugal part of me thinks Hmm, that will probably cost a couple of hundred pounds and I don't want him thinking just cos he asks for something, we will always buy it for him.

Dilema

babsmam · 05/09/2015 10:05

Unescorted, rant away Flowers

Unescorted · 05/09/2015 10:08

Peppa get him to write you a reasoned arguement as to why he needs a computer. I got DD to do this when she wanted her ears pierced.... it was the funniest letter I have ever read. It boiled down to being social toast at school if she didn't have them done & therefore she would need a peircing elsewhere to conform. The only place I wouldn't be aware of it was her vagina.....

SpottyTeacakes · 05/09/2015 10:30

£59.95 tesco delivery but the substituted my 750g mince for 600g for the same price so I asked the driver to take it back. He scanned it and told me to keep it for free Grin So my shopping was £56.95

peppansalt · 05/09/2015 10:31

Unescorted that is priceless! What a good idea. I shall ask him to put together a business case for said laptop and why we should get him one.

My other question is how little I can pay for one!

SpottyTeacakes · 05/09/2015 10:31

£55.95!

blueteapot · 05/09/2015 10:40

Happy birthday pointless! I have vax that also shampoos carpets, was on offer about 4 -5 months ago and I treated my inherited beige bedroom carpets to it as they were minging with 2 vomity babies but arent on the replace list yet. Theyre sparkly and clean now. Handy for rugs etc too eg recently when a delivery guy left a big muddy streak up the hall rug I was able to shampoo it out straight away. Are yoy anywhere near NI for a lend?

Collieputthekettleon · 05/09/2015 11:14

Next have credited my account with £25 after I complained about some homeware not lasting.

SpottyTeacakes · 05/09/2015 11:17

Meal plan:

Beef rendang (got the tesco paste) with sticky rice
Crispy chilli beef with sticky rice
Beans on toast (swimming night)
Chicken burgers with ? Something frozen or new potatoes (work night)
Sausage casserole
Spag bol
Chilli

peppa you can get a great laptop on ebay for next to nothing. The £1000 laptops fro 5 years ago are now £50 and if he only needs it for email and web browsing he'll be sorted. Just look for mint condition second hand. My ds has had his own since age 2. It's a brilliant thing for their reading and learning.

It's best to make an absolute rule though that is stays in public rooms, not in the bedroom. Be very careful about YouTube, and tell him that if he looks at websites that you are not happy with then it goes away again. We've found that works well.

fishfortea · 05/09/2015 11:32

Happy Birthday Pointless!

Have just rang my bank and spoke with a very helpful lady, have found what the £1 pending was for - Cath Kidston! I treated myself to one of her bags in the sale and apparently they do it to trial the account! It should be debited back into my account on Tuesday! Such a relief.

Think today is going to be a bit spendy, have just book me and 2 of my DDs into a few keep fit classes for the week. At least its a healthy way to spend my money! I cant believe they actually want to keep fit with me, tomorrow we are doing body conditioning and weights and on Wednesday piloxing! They have made my day! Smile

Whatabout · 05/09/2015 11:32

My company sell off laptops so many times a year, I bought my teen sister one for £30. It's inly for browsing and college work so perfect and she was delighted.

SpottyTeacakes · 05/09/2015 11:33

That's lovely fish Smile And great news abou the £1!

PorcupineNecktie · 05/09/2015 12:51

Hello everyone, I'm late to the party I know but may I join you? I'm trying to get into budgeting properly, I'm so far in debt but determined to pull myself out!

For people asking about laptops, the HP Steams are quite good and nice & bright (they come in pink and blue) for about £180. But second-hand is always best if you can find a bargain!

Hoping for a NSD today!

SpottyTeacakes · 05/09/2015 12:57

Welcome porcupine

I've just put together a bag of hope for the Syrian refugees. Need to buy a toothbrush and toothpaste to put in it.

Girlfriend36 · 05/09/2015 13:07

hi all, I am feeling might sorry for myself as still feeling rotten Sad managed to drag myself around Morrisons even though I thought i might pass out at one point! Spent £54 which I am pleased with as have completely restocked the freezer for that and i reckon on having at least 2 weeks worth of diners now. Their salmon is in on offer so I picked up 3 trays (6 fillets) for under £6!

Have to prise myself off the sofa and take dd to her riding lesson in a min, really hoping the painkillers I have taken will kick in as my head in thumping and it feels like a red hot poker is going through my left eye. Fed up as meant to be going out tonight but not looking very likely at the mo Sad

Girlfriend36 · 05/09/2015 13:08

Spotty I have sorted a bag of jumpers and some fleecy pjs of dds for the refugees, it feels like everyone is doing their bit now so I hope it all gets through to the people that need it.

Unescorted · 05/09/2015 13:09

Porcupine welcome. That was me 6 years ago.... I am so near finishing paying off the last of it. The people on this thread are amazing, full of really sound down to earth advice and so supportive. I couldn't have done it without them. They gave me the confidence to say not buying things is a good thing, to counter the barrage of advertising and social media. messages.

I will have a NSD with you. I have been foraging for apples & they are now in the oven cooking down for a crumble. We have a community orchard which I helped plant. One of the planting days was really wet & cold and only 4 people turned up..... we planted some in very out of the way places that no one ever walks by. The other 3 have their own orchards Grin.

SpottyTeacakes · 05/09/2015 13:15

Oh girlie poor you. When I have a migraine all I can do is sleep it off. If I was nearer I would take your dd to get lesson for you!

Ememem84 · 05/09/2015 13:38

Was all ready to spend £25 today on my riding lesson but as I stayed to help out later last week instructor only charged me £10 for the hour.

Going shopping with dh later this afternoon. He was given vouchers for his birthday and wants to spend. I want to look at coats.

Have convinced him to look at what he has and with out what he needs before we leave. Wife win.

Tonight's dinner - more use it up freezer food. Have one chicken breast defrosting and have loads of frozen veg. So am planning a chickeny veggie risotto.

Collieputthekettleon · 05/09/2015 13:39

Community orchard sounds amazing! Hello porcupine Smile

Just pre ordered DHs Christmas present. Saw it on Amazon and knew instantly that he'd love it. It's been years since I was 100% sure on a gift. Technically not spent anything as the money won't be debited until October. Grin

peppansalt · 05/09/2015 13:53

Girlie that's horrible. I suffer from migraines and agree that it's like a red hot poker being stabbed in your eye. I take prescribed triptan meds which is the only thing to touch the pain. If you can, take a nap in a dark room.

peppansalt · 05/09/2015 13:55

Ipsos thanks for the tip about getting a laptop from eBay. Is there anything/spec I should be looking for? Don't want to end up with a dud.

ipsos · 05/09/2015 14:17

Peppa if you can get 3GB of Ram then that's good, and make the sure the screen is working. If you're wondering about processors then you can ask here and we'll look them up for you. Toshiba and Dell are very good.

ipsos · 05/09/2015 15:10

Our trip to tesco in person came out at £20 less than the usual online shop, mainly because I couldn't remember what I needed to buy. Score!

Family visit improving, after I convinced dh and ds to work as a team in people management. Double score!
