Greece is to fine the unvaccinated aged over 60. Those not booking an appointment for a vaccine before January 16th will be fined €100 a month.
An estimated 520,000 over 60s in Greece are unvaccinated.

This is disgusting if true.
The sad thing is, you'll have people supporting it and wanting it in the UK for all 'the unvaxed'.

ColinTheKoala · 30/11/2021 12:03

I tis disgusting. And ageist.

Flaxmeadow · 30/11/2021 12:15

The state pension is around €750 a month, so thats a large chunk for most people. The rich won't be affected
But on the other hand, Greece has extremely high hospitalisations/deaths ATM
100 deaths a day is a lot in a population of 10 million. The equivalent in the UK would be about 700 a day. Numbers are still rising in Greece and the vaccine uptake is low compared to the UK

Any punishment based on fines always affects the poor, it doesn't touch the rich who can do as they want

Flaxmeadow · 30/11/2021 12:20

If this is going to policy, maybe the fines should be means tested?

Also will impact visitors I would think now. If not already being brought in, in the near future I can see a ban on unvaccinated vistors/tourists

I think it makes sense in some way. Over 60s are most likely to be seriously ill if contract covid, so whoever is refusing vaccine without valid reason is putting pressure on health system and community. In a way, gov is doing favour to keep people healthy. It's very sad that anti vaxx movement tainted so many people's mind that it have to come to this.

FflosFfantastig · 30/11/2021 12:49

It's disgraceful. Anybody supporting it really needs to take a look at themselves and their ideologies.

Hairwizard · 30/11/2021 13:49

Fucking disgrace. Why are people going along with this bullshit?
Anyone in agreement needs to give their heads a wobble.

rainrainraincamedowndowndown · 30/11/2021 21:29

Fucking disgrace? More people being unvaccinated, more chance of new valiant. More people unvaccinated, this pandemic go on for long time.
We are lucky that so many people are vaccinated in UK. But not so much in other countries. And from what I have read and heard, it's a lot to do with misinformation rather than lack of supply in some countries.

CrunchyCarrot · 30/11/2021 21:40

I'm very surprised so many 60+ yrs old are choosing not to be vaccinated there. Perhaps they have very little trust in their govt after all Greece has been through in recent years. I do know one person who's from Greece on another forum, she is a militant anti-vaxxer so I imagine she's going to refuse the payments, too! I left the forum because I couldn't stand anymore of her rubbish and the Mods just let her continue.

On the other hand, I don't think it's right to fine people that way, many will be pensioners and ill able to afford the monthly fines. I suppose the govt there is desperate to know how to 'persuade' people, but I don't believe this is the right way to go about it.

Stressymcstress · 30/11/2021 21:46

Anyone supporting this I assume would also support fines for people with a high BMI, smokers, drinkers, those who don’t exercise regularly, those who consume too much sugar/ salt/ fat etc…

Goldbar · 30/11/2021 21:53

I am incredibly pro-vaccination.

But this is just wrong. People need to have control over what they put in their bodies. Making it illegal or introducing fines for the unvaccinated is abhorrent.

XenoBitch · 30/11/2021 21:57

This is just plain vile. The rich can see it as a minor thing... and as usual, the poor suffer.

Theplantisgrowing · 30/11/2021 22:00

It's a good thing, get vaccinated ffs. The money is going into their health system to pay to look after the selfish people who aren't vaccinated occupying beds that other critically ill patients could be putting to good use.

Totallydefeated · 30/11/2021 22:01

Appalling violation of the right to bodily autonomy.

pianolessons1 · 30/11/2021 22:03

Excellent. Those who struggle with critical thinking shouldn't be allowed to be a public health issue for the rest of us.

PrincessNutNuts · 30/11/2021 22:06

YouGov asked me if I'd be in favour of this policy in the U.K. today.

I wouldn't. I'd prefer better communication and leadership from the government, a more trustworthy government that didn't lie to us so much, and better strategies against disinformation.

I was also how much sympathy I have with people who choose to remain unvaccinated.

XenoBitch · 30/11/2021 22:06

I hope that you do realise that there is a huge gulf of people that exist between the extreme anti-vaxxers and those who have been told not to get the vaccine. People with health anxiety, hesitant about the jab, previous side effects, needle phobia, mixed messages from all directions.

Don't know about high bmi and people don't exercise, who consume too much fat/sugar/salt, but smokers and drinkers pay so much taxes in UK already.
BrassCandlestick · 30/11/2021 22:10

After using Greek hospitals a couple of times over the past few years, I would say they have serious underfunding issues and are very concerned about the care they can give to an influx of patients.

Theplantisgrowing · 30/11/2021 22:11

Needle phobia? Give me a break. It takes nano seconds literally nano seconds to be vaccinated. I hate having blood tests done but I still go because I am a sensible adult. The selfishness of all those people yapping on about bodily autonomy? The rest of us stepped up for the better good of the country/globe. What makes you so special that you can't do the same. Go and have some hypnosis if you are truly phobic and just play your part in getting out of this awful situation.

Jesus the irony is strong with this one.

I have needle phobia, and it has been the reason I am so far unvaccinated. I am waiting for the nasal spray version.
Starcaller · 30/11/2021 22:16

I think Greece's poor infrastructure when it comes to hospitals will be a massive driver for this. I guess from their perspective, they just cannot handle the numbers so have to do something to drive down admissions in the most at-risk group.

They have a pretty high percentage of over-60s unvaccinated so I think they've reached panic stations and are running out of options.
