So Germany has now suspended AZ for under 55s.

A. Didn't they previously refuse it for over 65s..so unless you're 56 to 64 years old youre shit out of luck!

And b. Why are they pausing again when the EMA said it was fine?!

apparently they've had 30 cases out of 2.7 m doses I think

Thanks for the new thread. Interesting to see that Ursula chose not to sign the pandemic treaty and seems to be out of step with just about everyone on this. How is that going to work?

StormzyinaTCup · 30/03/2021 16:08

Another one checking in 👍🏻
Ursula has clearly gone rogue!!

Austria are going to buy 1 million Sputnik V vaccines which has not been approved by the EMA, I know which vaccine I would be more worried about

They are now finding that the risk of this severe blood clot is as high as 1 in every 100,000 and chance of death as high as 40%. So it seems prudent to amend age range.

You couldn't make it up.

@ForeverAintEnough12 fine for banning it for a certain age If Germany think it’s not safe but then why are the EU giving the UK (which we have nothing to do with it) such a hard time and banning exports if they don’t want it 🤷‍♀️

Why would you be more worried about Sputnik? Lancet published data showing its 92% effective, safe and completely prevents deaths and hospitalisation from covid. It seems to be a great vaccine with higher efficacy than both Pfizer and AZ.

FourTeaFallOut · 30/03/2021 16:27

I wouldn't worry about the sputnik vaccine at all so long as it gets the all clear by the MHRA.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 30/03/2021 16:28

"They are now finding that the risk of this severe blood clot is as high as 1 in every 100,000 and chance of death as high as 40%. So it seems prudent to amend age range."

Do you have a link for that? Because I'd be interested to read it.

If that's the case why haven't we seen it happening here? It was covered in the briefing and Hancock (I think) said we had had 5 cases and 1 resulted in death. No proven link to the vaccine

Baileysforchristmas · 30/03/2021 16:29

Because it hasn’t been approved yet, once EMA have approved it I would less worried, also AZ data is over 20 million I think there about, vaccinated in the UK now less than 50 have been seriously ill after having it.

Baileysforchristmas · 30/03/2021 16:30

@ForeverAintEnough12 would you be happy to have Sputnik? Even the name puts me off.

I would guess as Germany is only one country in the EU which is a huge unvaccinated population. Probably looking to ban exports for the same reason India is banning the export of millions of AZ due to go to the U.K. too - as cases are high in their own populations and they are largely unvaccinated..

3asAbird · 30/03/2021 16:32

I am so confused my eu and the science and undermining their own ema
They may as well scrap AZ in some counties.

Does anyone now why they have extra 10million phizer.
Also how can 1 member state ie Austria block the other 26 members states from ordering vaccines.
Surely one state doesn't have that power.

Russia say they have now developed 3 covid 19 vaccines.
They seem have issues manufacturing and Italy keeps saying it can be made there.
To be honest they can argue amongst themselves and make as many crazy age restrictions as they want will just mean they move slowly and it won't solve issue of supply.

I defiantly think they will do something stupid In April.
Especially if Johnson and Johnston is very delayed.

Baileysforchristmas · 30/03/2021 16:32

Yes but India aren’t saying AZ isn’t safe 🤷‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2021 16:32

Thanks for the good discussion

ForeverAintEnough12 · 30/03/2021 16:33

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady I read it in the guardian here
www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/30/canada-suspends-use-of-astrazeneca-covid-vaccine-for-those-under-55

“ There is substantial uncertainty about the benefit of providing AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines to adults under 55 given the potential risks,” said Dr Shelley Deeks, vice-chair of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.

Deeks said the updated recommendations came amid new data from Europe that suggests the risk of blood clots is now potentially as high as one in 100,000, much higher than the one in one million risk believed before.

She said most of the patients in Europe who developed a rare blood clot after vaccination with AstraZeneca were women under age 55, and the fatality rate among those who develop clots is as high as 40%.”

@Baileysforchristmas yes I would happy to take it once approved. I don’t tend to make medical decisions based on the names of the medications 🤷‍♀️

Baileysforchristmas · 30/03/2021 16:34

@3asAbird yes keep heads down, let the EU get on with it, while we keep vaccinating.

Baileysforchristmas · 30/03/2021 16:36

@ForeverAintEnough12 well hopefully it will be approved soon so you can have it, i’m glad l’ve had AZ. Everyone in my family except my children are vaccinated with 1st dose, I feel very lucky and safe.

ForeverAintEnough12 · 30/03/2021 16:40

@Baileysforchristmas I’m not sure why you are so defensive about this? Would you not be equally glad and feeling safe if you had had Pfizer / Moderna or J&J / Sputnik once they’ve been approved too? Why only feeling safe to have AZ?
