Now they have brought the Brazil variant with them.

We need to shut all borders to tourists for this year. Only absolute essential travel allowed with hotel quarantine after at travellers cost.

Also they need to have a very-strong sentences to deter others.

Or am I too harsh ?

Haven't seen aging parent for more than a year.. Nor have I. And we’re both in the UK. So that’s not a good argument for exemptions to quarantine

IrishMamaMia · 01/03/2021 13:53

I think measures should be much stricter for travel outside Europe. In Europe and UK the majority of countries have similar Covid policies. Elsewhere, this isn't the case and we could do with following the lead of NZ and Oz.

Anyone can go through England and not have to quarantine if they haven't been in a red list country. So why not go and see your ageing parent? There are plenty of good reasons why there should be exemptions to being charged nearly £2000 to be treated like less than a prisoner.
MRex · 01/03/2021 14:19

The airline screwed up not getting the details for the missing passenger.
It was the PCR test details that weren't complete. We don't know if this was someone who flew in from Brazil, or who flew in from somewhere else, or who got infected in the UK. As they got tested, presumably they isolated with some symptoms at some stage of illness. What's that got to do with the border force checking paperwork?

notimagain · 01/03/2021 15:13

As far as I understand UK rules:-

Arrive from a red list country - Managed quarantine in a hotel.

Arrive from a non-red list country - quarantine at home or other place..as nominated on the PLF.

The more I read about this the more I'm agreement with Jent13c in that the physical isolation side of things worked as it should..

I'm not sure the admin failure is completely the fault of an airline since as I remember it the PLF is logged on-line with gov.uk .

notimagain · 01/03/2021 15:14

Thanks, ignore my comment about the PLF.

Jent13c · 01/03/2021 16:11

@Mrex

My deepest apologies, that was not the impression the media was portraying this morning when I read about it, it was saying that it was a forward travelling detail form not fully completed. I admittedly do need to quality check that news source!

MRex · 01/03/2021 16:21

@Jent13c - it gets a bit muddled because of people criticising the quarantine decisions as though that's related. Sky has some clear quotes here: news.sky.com/story/covid-19-new-brazil-covid-variant-of-concern-discovered-in-uk-health-officials-say-12231996
"The third case is unlinked and the whereabouts of the individual unknown, as the person did not complete their test registration card, PHE said."

popmimiboo · 01/03/2021 17:48

** I know someone who is planning exactly this at the moment. Was in Brazil (and has been jet setting all over during the last year) and is now swanning around Paris until they can fly back to London without going into quarantine. It takes the absolute piss

Not sure of the timeline of these events, but the French external borders to non EU countries are closed so the possibility of someone hopping on a plane to Paris from Brazil to then swan about in Paris is highly unlikely Hmm

popmimiboo · 01/03/2021 17:52

How about the fact the other countries have closed their borders to the UK?
I would love to pop over to see my family in England and, as a UK citizen, I would be allowed to. However, I would not be allowed back into my country of residence due to extremely strict border restrictions with the UK!

sue20 · 01/03/2021 18:00

Re test results not completed, I just can't imagine how that could have happened I"ve had 4 tests in different centres, the amount of attention and organisation and checking was 100% . And this before you did the actual test, so no running away afterwards or whatever! Re test results false negatives, I think this is pretty unusual. The most accurate tests seem to be 97%

Your post OP really riles me. It’s so narrow minded as are all that are calling for a complete closure of boarders. We are a MiL it family. Half british (me) half American (husband). There are thousands of us like this. My son goes to school in the UK and spends holidays here. If there was to be a full bladder closure it would mean extreme financial hardship and more mental health/stress struggles for my family after what has been an exhausting hear anyway. We endure a lot with deployments and separation anyway and people like you are calling to make things even trickier and more expensive for us than they already are. You need to seriously check your privilege, you can bet anyone traveling at the moment is only for essential travel so the measures in place are enough. You’ll never stop variants sadly. It’s a virus. How people haven’t grasped this yet is beyond me!!!!

Plunger · 01/03/2021 18:02

How do you know they were tourists? Were they simply returning home ? If they are UK citizens legally they cannot be banned from entering the country.

lily2403 · 01/03/2021 18:12

If this pandemic has shown me anything it’s the utter selfishness of the general public in not giving a shit about others.
Just before this all started there was a movement of be kind which was lovely. This started and it was elbows at the ready and fook everyone else. #uttertwats

Lovingspring · 01/03/2021 18:18

My sister in Australia was telling me they are not meant to call the variants after countries anymore, it is seen as racist, they call them by number.

You are not alone, and the all the 'all travel banned' now brigade don't realise we are not self-sufficient, far from it.
Bertiebiscuit · 01/03/2021 19:36

Anyone who has travelled anywhere unless they 100 %had to in the last year is a selfish criminal who should be fined to the hilt and get put on some sort of register

It's not a criminal offense. Thankfully we don't live in that type of world. Hmm
lljkk · 01/03/2021 20:20

unless they 100 %had to

I'm wondering how the % gets measured.

I mean, we still have edible things in the house -- don't 100% need to shop until the cupboards are completely bare, right?

My bubble friend has roof over her head, food, an internet connection, she doesn't 100% need any hugs ever, right?

I volunteer walk some dogs, but not if the weather is terrible. They never 100% need to go out, right?

Unless my house were burning down, I can't think of a true 100% reason why I would need to leave it in the next 10 weeks, probably.

Cam77 · 01/03/2021 20:21

Either don't let people travel for anything non business, or otherwise mandatory two week government monitored and enforced hotel quarantine. Don't know Western governments struggle so much with the basic stuff.

Not going to happen, at least not in England; they've already laid out what their plans are. Get over it.
rawalpindithelabrador · 01/03/2021 20:26

And people will be able to come through England; the border is not devolved no matter how much the Covid Kool-Aid drinkers want it to be. Too bad.

They all should be put in prison.

Thanks god bojo and his advisors are the ones making rhe rules.
