Now they have brought the Brazil variant with them.

We need to shut all borders to tourists for this year. Only absolute essential travel allowed with hotel quarantine after at travellers cost.

Also they need to have a very-strong sentences to deter others.

Or am I too harsh ?

The two Bristol cases with correct tracking details have completed isolating at home because the genetic testing takes a lot longer than the pcr test. It's takes about 2 weeks

@OPrettywoman

How do you know whether your test is being sent off for genetic testing? Do you have to sign a consent form or do they just get on with it?

About 10% were being genome tested in the UK, the number had been steadily increasing and may be higher now. You don't sign anything additional.

'Scotland' didn't exist as a single political unit at the time though. And you are forgetting the Antonine wall.

This and was fighting among itself. That silly travel was going on, disease be damned!

There's not enough checks. I know personally 12 people who have travelled just because they wanted to. And 2 of them has been fined £200 yet he was still allowed to go! It wasn't to a high risk country but still.

There are no direct flights to the UK from any country on the red list so anyone needing to make that trip would have to fly a longer trip with more connections. I understand why the UK made the decision to suspend those direct flights as it stops more people transiting through those hot spots to get to the UK but equally means more mixing of people on different flight rounds because you can't travel A to B but have to go via somewhere.

There is very little point in all this tracking and 'door to door' testing and stuff, when we're about to send 10 million kids back to school to their daily mass gatherings. It'll be impossible to track then.

Her restrictions are also ridiculous given the fact that England has different ones and she cannot control the border between England and Scotland, or between Northern Ireland and Scotland, because it's illegal.

Really, get real! All this ire. When England lifts there is nothing to stop Scots or English or anyone to cross between that border with no quarantine because this is the UK.

Get over it.

They are only allowing people with residency rights here to come from Brazil. No tourists are allowed.

Report
Dustyboots · 01/03/2021 00:00

Oh that’s ok then. People with residency rights won’t be carrying Covid, least of all a new and highly spreadable variant.

It’s only possible for tourists to pose such a risk.

Money just comes from nowhere. Ban all travel, punish people travelling for work, especially those in the only vital industry Scotland has left because honestly, who the fuck goes to Sao Paolo for fun, my father wouldn't let us go with him, for good reason, back in the 80s, but hey, it was a job, he had a mortgage to pay and a family to support. I can almost guarantee they are oil workers. Tank your other industry, tourism, sure, Westminster will pay you for it. Once England opens up, no Scot will go over there. Nope. Please. I'm off out of here. I'll have been jabbed twice, what else do they want? My kids have been in school since January.

Now hit those travelling for the only industry you have left, that's going to work! The employers are so going to pay for it, yep, that's going to happen.

We're all going to die! Yep, sure are, but it will be very unpleasant before that if we try to do what she's trying. Because we're not bloody Oz or NZ.

Surely it’s not about shutting down all travel about effective test, track and trace?

You shouldn’t be allowed into the country without completing the paperwork correctly. Everyone on every flight has a passport it really shouldn’t be this difficult.

It makes me so cross that the county is making so many sacrifices and then we open our doors and let a new variant in.

Bristol Post is reporting more info related with the Gloucesteshire cases
Health officials are following up with people who were on the same flight as the South Gloucestershire patient - Swiss Air LX318 which travelled via Zurich on February 10.
It appears one person who had very recently arrived home to South Gloucestershire from Brazil - they were isolating at home - and another person who is a close contact, and that makes up the two cases in Bristol.
The surge testing of as many people as possible is taking place across five postcode areas, that cover Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke and Patchway.

The five postcodes are:

BS32 0
BS32 8
BS32 9
BS34 5
BS34 6

@notimagain

Even "essential" workers need to be properly quarantined, no excuses, no exemptions.

Not from "non red" List counties though, not if you want stuff like PPE, and pharmaceuticals flown in by air (as lots are, and were, especially during the big PPE shortages last year) or even on a more routine basis fruit, veg brought in across the channel...all that needs people to cross borders on a frequent basis and locking them up for days on end after every border transit would screw the logistics chain PDQ.

But they came from a country on the red list. Your point is completely irrelevant to this case.

"They" did but as I understand it now possibly/in some cases before the red list even existed.

Anyhow I was actually answering yet another generic comment made upthread that appeared to call for everybody entering the UK to be quarantined.

The reporting on this is as usual hugely irresponsible. They flew in before hotel quarantine commenced.
The reporting hints strongly that the multiple flights were to bypass quarantine whereas it was more likely the only available options.
They practically give the impression that the person is on the run being hunted by scientists in hazmat suits.

Just after the warmest sunniest weekend of the year, too.

www.gov.scot/news/new-variant-of-covid-19-detected-in-scotland/

They were most likely oil and gas workers coming home from a trip offshore. You would need to fly via somewhere to get home from Brazil, Abz is a very small airport. Aberdeen is one of the worst affected places for unemployment as oil & gas companies make masses of people redundant as soon as they see any downturn. They will probably all be hired back as soon as projects get moving again but in the meantime more people are having to take jobs abroad to get them through the slump.

I don't really understand why everyone is up in arms about this though, they came back, self isolated as they should have and subsequently were found positive so continued to self isolate until their 10 days were up. The system worked exactly as it should have for these three cases. The airline screwed up not getting the details for the missing passenger.
