I'm fucking sick of the way this whole thing is turning people into nosey, curtain twitching, Covid police.

In supermarket today, with my shop I bought various 'party supplies'. Paper plates, napkins, party foods, plastic cups, poppers etc...

Got a few dirty looks, whatever. But a woman actually tutted and said she hopes I'm not having a NYE party with a look of disgust.

No. It's for my kids. Who have had a fucking shit year. I'm going to throw them a party in our home. I'm going to do a buffet with party food and paper plates and poppers and have a fucking disco and make the best of our NYE because they've been so low recently.

I didn't explain myself, just asked her to respectfully mind her own. But I'm sick of everyone watching what everyone else is doing. It's horrible. I hate what this is doing to people.

You should see the looks I get every time I want to polish my surf board.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 30/12/2020 22:54

The gov and the media have done it. The Tier system doesn't help.

MrZogsSexWax · 30/12/2020 22:54

Sorry. Not helpful.

TheLeastBit · 30/12/2020 22:56

Obviously I mean a party for just me, DH and the kids by the way! It's not the same and maybe it's not 'essential' purchases (although I was buying general food as well) but I want to do the house up like a proper NYE party for when they come downstairs in the evening and see some smiles on their faces ffs!

It's like you're a criminal for having any sort of fun recently.

Sadly there's a lot of people breaking the rules which is making this worse for everyone else and puts some people on edge. You got lumbered in with the rule breakers when you shouldn't have.

It'll be parties galore tomorrow.

MushMonster · 30/12/2020 22:58

Yes, it is rather sad that we are reduced to this.
Really looking forward to the end of it!
Enjoy your party!

Whataloadofshit · 30/12/2020 22:58

I hear you loud and clear op.

I was going to start a thread.

One of the most difficult things I've found with this whole pandemic is peoples opinions and judgement over everything you do.

I'm a sensitive and anxious person who cares way too much what people think, so words tend to cut deep with me.

Walk a mile in someone's shoes before you judge.

FoolsAssassin · 30/12/2020 22:58

That is grim and there are some people out there who I hope look back and feel ashamed of their behaviour. Hope yiu have as good as time as you can in the circumstances and I think it’s a lovely thing to do.

bumblingbovine49 · 30/12/2020 22:59

We bought party poppers too. This is because very new year , DH, DS a d I set off party poppers at midnight. It is our tradition. We set off about 20 each so buy a big bag. I wondered if anyone might say anything when we bought the poppers last week but no-one did

Bayleaf25 · 30/12/2020 22:59

Is it a bad time to say the environment still counts so YABU, just use regular plates and cups and wash hands and play music and games and have fun xx

inquietant · 30/12/2020 23:00

Yeah that's grim. Well done for not reacting!!

TheLeastBit · 30/12/2020 23:00

It's horrible. I get that there will be people who break the rules and throw parties with multiple households and people are on edge.

But it's so sad that I can't even go to a supermarket and buy a couple of fun things for my kids now without multiple people looking and judging and tutting.

Sounds like you responded a lot more politely than I would’ve done.

The plates are paper ones and just a small pack, the cups are actually some reusable ones they had in Tesco Smile (for about £4 more than the normal throwaway plastic ones!! but worth it haha).

I bought party food, hats, napkins, sparklers etc nobody batted an eyelid but the woman in front did joke we should share a packet of party hats as she needed 4 and I needed 3 (packet of 8)

Why was she looking at your basket anyway, how awful. She had no right to assume or have you answer to her.

Interestinglyenough1 · 30/12/2020 23:04

@Bayleaf25 how condescending.

I've no idea! I couldn't tell you what anyone else in the shop bought, I've no interest in other people's purchases!

Just felt awkward after that when putting it on the conveyor and packing etc... Thinking people will be looking!

Interestinglyenough1 · 30/12/2020 23:06

@TheLeastBit don’t worry about them or any other preachy ones.

That’s a lovely idea for your family, hope you all have a lovely time Xmas Wink

Vargas · 30/12/2020 23:06

There is a segment of our society that abhors the idea of anyone else potentially having more fun than them. Covid has brought them out in force. They can all fuck right off. Hope you have a great party.

Wishitsnows · 30/12/2020 23:06

There are some out there loving this shit. I was in the middle of the great park, hadn't seen anyone for about 15 mins and a family walked within about 15M of me shouting I should be wearing a mask, don't I know there is a pandemic! Shocked me at first but properly laughing now. They would have loved a high vis and clipboard for Xmas!
