Why is the Queen so quiet?

I wish she would say something, even a ten minute video urging the nation to pull together and do what we need to do in these challenging times.

I imagine it would be a boost for older people stuck at home, I know my MIL would appreciate it. She loves the Queen.

Prince Phillip has passed away

QuimJongUn · 19/03/2020 08:16

it's irrelevant whether you live in a semi or a castle

Oh ffs.

Try telling that to the older people isolated from their families, or the ones in care homes, or the ones who can't get hold of basic food items, or the ones facing the possibility of never seeing their loved ones again, or the ones trying to make a pension stretch to topping up their electricity meter for three months isolation AND food to cover it, if they're lucky enough to find any. And then worrying what to do when the food they've bought runs out and they've no friends/family to bring more.

QuimJongUn · 19/03/2020 08:17

Prince Phillip has passed away

Must be the fifth time this year already.

SamSeabornforPresident · 19/03/2020 08:18

At least if Prince Philip has died it might keep the old people in. 🤔

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 08:19

She can hand over the money we give them this year

Sitting in that grand palace will do sfa for tourism the only reason we keep them for some

Backtoreality1 · 19/03/2020 08:19

Because she is in her nineties and shouldn't have anyone near her that doesn't absolutely have to be there....the same as everyone else over 70!! Just because she is the queen it doesn't make her any less vulnerable

SamSeabornforPresident · 19/03/2020 08:20

At least if Prince Philip has died it might keep the old people in. 🤔

Although, now I think of it, they'd probably all want to line the streets for his funeral.

SarahInAccounts · 19/03/2020 08:21

The poor woman is probably terrified for herself and her family.

Leave her be.

loobyloo1234 · 19/03/2020 08:21

I don't really give a shit about what she has to say unless she's offering up Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital. People living in privilege who will not be affected by this virus, are not the type of people I want to hear from right now

floffel · 19/03/2020 08:21

@Unshriven - well said.

OvaHere · 19/03/2020 08:23

I expect we will get something when a full lockdown happens.

It occurred to me that the elder royals are at high risk from this. Not just due to age or underlying ailments but because whichever palace or stately home they isolate in they still need a fair amount of staff coming in and out. The Queen can't run Windsor Castle on her own and this virus is known to hang about on surfaces etc..

The mostly likely outcome is that they will all be absolutely fine (bar Phillip perhaps) but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that William might be King by the end of the year.

Dollywood · 19/03/2020 08:24

William has made a speech on his instagram page.
Have also heard the prince phillip rumour....not sure if that's true but I would have expected something from her.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 08:24

According to the latest Sovereign Grant accounts that were published last week, taxpayers in the UK are forking over more money than ever for the Royal Family. The monarchy cost £67 million ($86 million) in 2018-19, a 41% increase on the previous financial year.

£67m and a place to put people would be better.

Iamthewombat · 19/03/2020 08:25

The Queen can't run Windsor Castle on her own and this virus is known to hang about on surfaces etc..

I’m seeing the old bat trying to work out what to do with a bottle of dettol multi surface spray and a duster.

Katinski · 19/03/2020 08:25

Imagine, if this 90+year old lady, who just happens to be our Queen, succumbs to this virus (or just plain old age) will the world heads of state, etc, facetime her funeral?Stuff of dreams, that...

WinnieTheW0rm · 19/03/2020 08:25

If they do not spend all the Sovereign Grant, what happened to the unspent part? Or is it claimed in arrears?

I think it's quite likely the spending will be lower as security, catering and travel costs will be well down because of cancelled events

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 08:27

Katinski yep

I wonder if they’d tell us it would send lots of people over the edge.

MitziK · 19/03/2020 08:27

Must be the fifth time this year already

It's about the fifth time in this thread.

If he had, nobody's going to admit it, as the rules are that you get days of muzak and nothing else on TV. They already know that once we realise daytime TV consists solely of Antiques Programmes and People With Fucktons of Dosh Buying Big Farmhouses (that they are now quite happily not-quite self isolating in), there will be rioting, so he'll be kept in a fridge for at least six months.

Grandmi · 19/03/2020 08:28

Yes I was wondering why the RF has gone so quiet!! The elderly would appreciate a moral boosting message.

thepeopleversuswork · 19/03/2020 08:29
  1. Because she's very elderly
  2. Because she's self-isolating and a film crew flapping about her and her extremely elderly and not very healthy husband would be a huge risk
  3. Because anything a monarch said now would not do much to alleviate the fear of people facing sickness and/or poverty
  4. Because the government/broadcasters have more urgent priorities than organising a royal broadcast.
Iamthewombat · 19/03/2020 08:30

The elderly would appreciate a moral boosting message.

My parents are 88. I can imagine what they would say in response to a ‘morale boosting’ message from QE2. It would not be appreciative!

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 19/03/2020 08:33

I agree. It might make some elderly people listen.

scarbados · 19/03/2020 08:34

I imagine it would be a boost for older people stuck at home

There are no words to express my scorn for this patronising idea. Imagine all you like - this isolated older person doesn't give a flying one for the queen and doesn't need her to exude fake concern and sympathy.

QuimJongUn · 19/03/2020 08:34

I don't really give a shit about what she has to say unless she's offering up Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital

And Windsor, Balmoral, Clarence House, Kensington Palace...

Selmababies · 19/03/2020 08:36

@FlamingoandJohn and everyone else
A sensible, stoical address from her might finally get some of the older people to bloody listen!

Yes, and it may finally get some of the people from other age groups to bloody listen too! You know, all the ones on here that are gleefully and selfishly saying that they're still going to the gym, or to restaurants, or on holiday, or their second homes?

Do you really think it's only older people that are being defiant?

Plenty have already self isolated (me included, alone) and the demonisation of us older people is really damned irritating. Being older isn't neccessarily so very different from being younger you know, in terms of attitudes and beliefs, and political views too!

Instead of being constantly bashed on here, it would be good to have a little respect and support. In fact, I haven't seen even ONE positive comment, expressing any support or commiseration for us self isolaters. It's my ninth day now and it's hard and scary and upsetting in all sorts of ways. My daughter's uni has closed and she is staying elsewhere so as not to comprimise my health/isolation and I'm facing not seeing her on Mother's Day or her 21st birthday shortly. Small things considering the climate, but important nevertheless.

So, please stop the mindless bashing and 'othering' of older people.

Oh and lastly, we don't all love the bloody queen just because we're over 60.

__I think i may need to take a break from MN because it's making me feel so friggin worthless--
