Stay at home for one week if you’ve a cold (even though all evidence is that incubation is two weeks)

People over 70 don’t go on cruises.

WHAT!!!

134 new cases in a day and no action. 13 EU countries have closed all schools, another 11 partial closures but apparently no action needed in Uk.

Jesus.

We are the blue line, Italy the red. Our line is lower, because they are ahead of us by about 14 days, but ours is actually steeper.

MrsMGE · 15/03/2020 11:10

Yes, we would have to come out again eventually, but so far the indications from China are that the lockdown has worked, there are barely any new cases. Italy's death toll is still high because the strict measures have only been introduced less than a week ago. I suspect it will start decreasing next week. The rate of spread has also decreased, yes they still get around 2k new cases per day (which is a lot because they've left it too long) but you need to look at the daily percentage increase, it's nowhere near as the UK's rate at the moment. It's slowing down.

We can only do what seems to be working, rather than go against the flow, it's just plain irrational.

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 11:12

I can believe that. What's more, they're not even testing now. I've got it very seriously to the extent that I'm having to fight against choking on my own mucus (I literately couldn't breathe last night because I was too weak to cough.

But they're not testing. So the numbers will be much higher than they're saying.

MrsMGE · 15/03/2020 11:22

Mittens, I'm sorry, do you think it's the CV? Can you get through to anyone on 111? Sounds like you're very poorly, bless you. Sending lots of strength Flowers

buttonmoonb4tea · 15/03/2020 11:39

@Mittens030869 please get yourself to hospital, if you're struggling to breathe then you need to be seen by medical professionals.

I was on the verge of contacting 111 2 days ago when I was struggling to breathe, i wish I had as I think the anxiety it was causing was exacerbating the breathlessness. A vicious cycle.

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 11:56

We tried yesterday. My DH phoned 999, but because I'd managed to somehow keep gasping for breath until I found the energy to cough and puke up the mucus, they decided that it wasn't an emergency at that stage.

MrsMGE · 15/03/2020 12:00

Get your DH to keep trying on 111 until he gets through and tell them how poorly you are, someone needs to come out and see you by the sounds of things.

buttonmoonb4tea · 15/03/2020 12:00

@Mittens030869 I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Ring again if you feel you need to.

It is scary, and I don't think the vast amount of the population have grasped that yet.

Ess201 · 15/03/2020 12:31

I think I have it too and no they aren’t testing - only if you’ve been back from an affected region or in known contact with someone confirmed to have it or an emergency case ... my friends have it too - they are many many people with this virus now in this country

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 12:50

It's so ridiculous, because this now IS an infected country! Angry

Mittens030869 · 15/03/2020 12:52

@buttonmoonb4tea Thank you for the kind words. My DH is at home with me so I'm not alone at least.

PNomintrude · 15/03/2020 12:58

Oh Mittens that sounds awful Sad. Sending you strength and wishing you a very speedy recovery. Flowers

MrsMGE · 17/03/2020 06:39

So now all those preachers from last week: "UK Govt knows what it's doing", "herd immunity", "we'll all get through it quickly", "no need for drastic measures, it's all scientific advice", "other countries got it wrong", "we don't need to follow" crews...

We are only few days down the line and Imperial College London confirms we were on course for a "catastrophic epidemic which would overwhelm the health system". Some may say we couldn't have known that few days ago. I'd strongly argue we could and we did, and what the UK Govt did was way too little.

This will have severe consequences and more people of all ages will die than necessary.

PoisoningPigeons · 17/03/2020 09:03

So now all those preachers from last week

Will be smoothly changing their tune 🙄like they never said otherwise...

OhMUMaaa · 17/03/2020 13:16

‘All those preachers’ aren’t in government and had no power to make these sort of decisions.

Stop being so insufferably smug.

BlackCatSleeping · 17/03/2020 13:18

I thought it was the government that came up with the whole "herd immunity" plan. Plenty on MN were saying that this made perfect sense, even though it absolutely didn't. Now the government seems to have quietly dropped it. Thank goodness!

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 13:32

I still maintain that there were government trolls pushing the herd immunity theory and saying it made perfect sense, when it was obvious it didn't/

MrsMGE · 17/03/2020 14:03

'All those preachers’ aren’t in government and had no power to make these sort of decisions. Stop being so insufferably smug.

So they shouldn't have been shouting on here as if they knew best. They are simply clueless.

Read with understanding. Where did I say this decision was in their hands? Oh, I see exactly: nowhere.

I'd rather be "smug" than clueless and shouty, thanks.

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 14:09

I would rather be informed thanks.

EerieSilence · 18/03/2020 16:52

If I were malicious, I'd be having a laugh. All those posters who were hailing BoJo's social experiment, called this his Winston Churchill's moment, said what an awesome leader he was and how we should rely on science.
Now, with the death toll going up, there's a 180-degree turn. How come if all you need to do is to lock up your elderly, keep calm and carry on with your stiff upper lip, invoking the Blitz spirit? The world just assumed that the dead would be a comfortable collateral damage to keep the economy running.
