Stay at home for one week if you’ve a cold (even though all evidence is that incubation is two weeks)

People over 70 don’t go on cruises.

WHAT!!!

134 new cases in a day and no action. 13 EU countries have closed all schools, another 11 partial closures but apparently no action needed in Uk.

Jesus.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 18:32

Italy had a huge amount more cases on that date.

U.K. does too as of last recorded date.

Praising China isn’t cool, it’s pragmatic

Oh yes, the country that decided to send their police to tell doctors to shut up about the emerging illness and tried to hide it until it was virtually impossible? The one that cried foul when other countries cut off flights (but are now happily doing it themselves?

Or how about the fact they knew that selling wildlife at wet markets literally caused outbreaks like SARS and they still did fuck all to stop it?

That country? Where a Xi Jinping lackey tried to start a conspiracy theory saying it was developed in a US military lab? Utterly shameless.

They’ve caused mass death and economic havoc through incompetence. Fuck them.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 18:55

Mango I’m with you.

Cam77 · 14/03/2020 19:55

@MangoFeverDream
The numbers say more than any argument I make. People in China are flabbergasted at how a country with a three month head start is allowing a crisis to turn into a tragedy.

An example:
Anhui province, not too far from Hubei province.
Size: Just a tad larger than England.
Population: 62 million
Total cases since beginning: 996
Active cases now: ZERO
Current mindset of authorities: possibly reopening schools in a couple of weeks (I teach dozens of students from this province online)

VS

England:
Total cases as of today: Likely 1000+
Predicted cases: 20 million?

Cam77 · 14/03/2020 19:59

China failed to stop an unhygienic food market somewhere in the middle of its small-continent sized country. Britain is planning on allowing 40 million to get infected (vs currently 12,000 active cases in China) with a seriously nasty virus having had months to ready itself.
“Incompetent” can certainly be ascribed to one of these two countries.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 20:47

Britain was the home of BSE. We have created illnesses with our practices.
But maybe now the focus should be on saving lives. And not just letting hundreds of thousands of people die?

MangoFeverDream · 14/03/2020 21:52

You are seriously deluded if you think the problem of wet markets is limited to one city. Their first clue should have come way back in 2004 when a coronavirus jumped from a civet cat to a human host. The Chinese authorities should have put restrictions on right then. Animal welfare laws were actually debated upon but never passed. I knew many Chinese activists trying to get this through to no avail. Since then, you’ve had several regional outbreaks. It’s a complete failure and will lead to mass loss of life and cost the globe untold billions no doubt.

Let’s not forget that doctors tried to blow the whistle and were met by police telling them to stop spreading rumours online. If they had taken it seriously then, we wouldn’t have had Chinese tourists blithely flying abroad on their biggest holiday of the year, spreading it all over the globe.

Do not let Chinese authorities deflect. You are blaming the victims and bizarrely applauding the villains. Fuck you for carrying their damn water. You should be ashamed.

In fact, China does have an effective system for lock down: few own cars and you can’t just go from one city to another without your national ID. Also, the government uses Weixin to track you and if you’ve been ID as a potential carrier they will forcibly quarantine you. So there’s that.

UYScuti · 14/03/2020 23:00

China mixes mediaeval torture in with modern medicine or perhaps you see that as an example of competence and efficiency Cam77, I guess it saves time doesn't it ...harvesting the organs before the donor is dead?

MrsMGE · 14/03/2020 23:23

What's the point in debating what China did or didn't do wrong months ago in terms of hygiene and seafood markets. The virus is out, we all need to focus what to do to deal with it now and going forward. Blame game is a waste of time and energy.

I see hundreds of scientists now officially criticised UK Govt approach in their letter. Where is Johnson today? Having a chilled out Saturday?

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 01:52

The last time Johnson was on TV he looked unwell. DP and I have been wondering if Boris has the virus.

theflushedzebra · 15/03/2020 02:00

All the leaders look unwell - because this is a massive threat.

Biggest pandemic threat since the 1918 flu, I think. It certainly makes me feel ill.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 02:24

What's the point in debating what China did or didn't do wrong months ago in terms of hygiene and seafood markets.

Well it deflects attention from the inaction of the UK government, doesn't it.
Every cloud has a silver lining.

MangoFeverDream · 15/03/2020 04:57

What's the point in debating what China did or didn't do wrong months ago in terms of hygiene and seafood markets

Because a PP brought China in as an example to follow; which is so ridiculous as their failures caused this whole thing in the first place. It’s more than an unhygienic seafood market; it’s the disgusting wildlife trade that has proven deadly before. Of course, the Chinese government can just ignore it if it’s their own people dying ....

Then, okay, it’s out in Wuhan. But instead of dealing with the problem, the local police intimidated doctors, telling them to stop spreading rumours.

As I said, there’s been speculation that the WHO delayed upgrading the coronavirus threat to pandemic due to Chinese pressure. That surely affects the rest of the world’s readiness to fight it, does it not?

Then you have Lijian Zhao, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saying that coronavirus was cooked up in a US military lab. Classic DARVO and horribly offensive.

I’m just glad the people of Wuhan aren’t taking it: www.ft.com/content/242cd13a-61b0-11ea-b3f3-fe4680ea68b5

I don’t care what anyone says about BJ but I bristle at suggestions that China is handling this correctly when this whole pandemic is a result of them NOT handling it correctly.

Forgone90 · 15/03/2020 05:09

They all probably look ill because they will be sleep deprived... do you honestly think they talk about this from 9-5- then pack up and go home like nothings happened and have the weekend to chill.?

you are deluded if you think that id the case!

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 05:48

Because a PP brought China in as an example to follow; which is so ridiculous as their failures caused this whole thing in the first place.

Utterly silly argument, and silly to sit there making it.

Their measures once they got the ball rolling prevented millions of deaths and showed the world what was necessary. They didn't ignore anything once 'their own people' started dying. They are now doing an excellent job and Boris Johnson is failing miserably.

But if it makes you happy to play pin-the-blame-on-someone-else instead of contributing sensible criticism of what is being done today in the UK to make sure the maximum number possible are saved from dying from COVID-19, knock yourself out.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 05:51

So now I have read your whole post.

Conspiracy theories based on animosity toward China and paranoia about pressure on the WHO.

Yes, that's a really valuable contribution to the question of how to deal with it now that it's a problem in the UK.

Hmm
MangoFeverDream · 15/03/2020 06:19

Conspiracy theories based on animosity toward China and paranoia about pressure on the WHO

It’s been speculated upon in several outlets: www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-7928349/amp/Did-China-use-status-major-superpower-pressure-World-Health-Organisation.html

Salient portion:

Richardson told The Telegraph: 'From a medical and human rights perspective, it is essential in these situations that people can trust the information available. 'I have real concerns about people who are supposedly "spreading rumours" being harassed by authorities, especially at a time when people are concerned they are not getting accurate information.' She believes the Chinese state could have deliberately silenced medical experts raising the alarm about the virus, and halted medical research. It comes amid claims China's status as a major superpower may have influenced the World Health Organisation's decision not to declare coronavirus an international emergency. The WHO has failed to declare a global health crisis. On Thursday the organisation said it was 'too early' for such a decision but added an emergency could still be declared if the outbreak continues to spread. 'This should not be taken as a sign that we don't think the outbreak is serious, or that we are not taking it seriously,' said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. 'Nothing could be further from the truth.' Now, baffled experts have warned that their decision may have been influenced by China. Huang, senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, told The Daily Telegraph: 'The criteria for declaring a public health emergency of international concern have been met.' But 'not all WHO decisions are made based on the developments in the biological world,' he added

I do not hate China, I lived there many years and there is so much to like about it. But the government has failed its people and the world.

If you want a background to the litany of failures, this Vox piece is a good one: www.vox.com/platform/amp/2020/2/10/21124881/coronavirus-outbreak-china-li-wenliang-world-health-organization

MangoFeverDream · 15/03/2020 06:33

FYI Sophie Richardson is the China director for Human Rights Watch so very far from a crank.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 06:37

Oh dear Lord, a 'salient portion' from none other rag than the Daily Mail. Quoting the Torygraph.

Spare us please.

You should be far more concerned that the British government is failing the British people. Save your anger for your own government whose responsibility is for its own people. China is only responsible for China.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 06:40

You are doing your utmost to take the spotlight off the failings of the British government to deal adequately and appropriately with this crisis by continuing to harp on about China.

Ironically you accused China of DARVO. Your contributions here are classic DARVO.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 06:42

If you want a thread about human rights in China, or open air markets there, or the trade in various animals, go and start one elsewhere.

MangoFeverDream · 15/03/2020 07:02

I’m concerned about setting the record straight. I’m not interested in defending Boris Johnson’s plans, please paste anything I’ve said here that suggests this. I have loved ones still in lockdown in China so yes, I’m very fucking concerned about the situation.

Oh dear Lord, a 'salient portion' from none other rag than the Daily Mail. Quoting the Torygraph

Quoting real actual people saying things you can look up elsewhere. Funny, would you say this when the DM reports on trans issues? I suspect not.

You are doing your utmost to take the spotlight off the failings of the British government to deal adequately and appropriately with this crisis by continuing to harp on about China

Of course China’s failures do not absolve Boris. Stop putting words in my mouth. I would not have weighed in on this thread if a PP hadn’t brought China in as some sort of beacon to follow.

Their measures once they got the ball rolling prevented millions of deaths and showed the world what was necessary. They didn't ignore anything once 'their own people' started dying

You obviously didn’t read the Vox article. Let me post some damning tidbits:

Chinese authorities delayed informing the world about the severity of a deadly disease spreading within the country’s borders — even trying to muzzle whistleblowers, like the late Dr. Li Wenliang. Now hailed as a national hero, Li was forced on January 3 by police to sign a letter saying he spread “untrue speech” for warning colleagues about the virus that eventually took his life. With more than 40,500 people infected and 910 deaths, China’s missteps early on seem increasingly fateful. The fact that the international community has not acknowledged those missteps is also consequential

And

“[This] delay in announcing the first cases of coronavirus for several weeks meant that during that time, millions of people traveled outside of Wuhan, so it was precious time lost,” Gostin said. According to the Financial Times, some 5 million people left Wuhan in the weeks before the city was quarantined on January 22, “thus helping to transport the virus all over the country and overseas.” “If the officials had disclosed information about the epidemic earlier,” Li told the Times before he died, “I think it would have been a lot better. There should be more openness and transparency.”

You do not need to praise China to slam Boris Johnson’s response.
