Stay at home for one week if you’ve a cold (even though all evidence is that incubation is two weeks)

People over 70 don’t go on cruises.

WHAT!!!

134 new cases in a day and no action. 13 EU countries have closed all schools, another 11 partial closures but apparently no action needed in Uk.

Jesus.

Surely people can see that this is an economic decision? They don't give a fuck about it spreading further at all do they?
Over 45 other countries, With fewer (known) cases than ours have taken the extreme measures of closing schools, Banning sporting events and gatherings.
What do Britain think they know that these other countries don't?

Whatisthisfuckery · 12/03/2020 17:21

We’re moving into the delay stage, which in this government’s case seems to mean delaying doing anything until it’s too late.

BMW6 · 12/03/2020 17:21

Oh come on. It’s obvious that most people that get it will be fine. Many won’t even know they have it.
We have to do something for the vulnerable which is clearly understood by the government. Stringing it out as opposed to the hope that no one else catches it
We need herd immunity, so some of us have to get it.We want it over by next winter when it will be even more dangerous.

This 100%.

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 12/03/2020 17:21

I’m terrified. My son is immune compromised. He got a cold last week and spent 5 days in hospital. But let’s all just carry on as normal. God help us.

Lindy2 · 12/03/2020 17:22

The experts seem to be very clearly explaining why they've made these decisions. It seems like this approach has been decided by science and medical professionals rather than Government.

nellodee · 12/03/2020 17:22

People keep saying, "Why do people think they know better than our health experts?"

At this point, I'm going to say, "Because they keep saying things that I know are blatantly untrue and making terrible decisions."

Yes, yes I DO know better than these health experts.

saltysow · 12/03/2020 17:22

@TheMemoryLingers 🤣 nice one!

nellodee · 12/03/2020 17:23

I'll post this again: the government says we are 4 weeks behind Italy. Here's my home made graph plotting us against Italy 10 days ago. If I can come up with this, who the hell have they got working for them?

SelfIsolating · 12/03/2020 17:25

I'm not surprise I have been gobsmacked by every political decision and vote we've had over the past few years. This is just the same. I am obviously completely out of sync with the way this Country works these days.

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 17:25

Did you listen to the reasons given by the actual experts or have you just seen the headlines? The explanation about why they've chosen these small actions now and why stronger measures so early would be counter productive was very clear and sensible.

There is no evidence that other countries, taking stronger measures earlier, are getting it right and we're not.

DGRossetti · 12/03/2020 17:25

In breaking news, Boris is going to issue everyone with a t-shirt reading 'Coronavirus - no thanks.'

Can we stop it with the fake news please ?

It's going to say "Get Corona done" FFS !

overnightangel · 12/03/2020 17:26

@TheMemoryLingers 🙂🛸

Chloemol · 12/03/2020 17:26

So what do people what to happen? They have explained their rationale so we do as others do and shut down schools etc, we delay it coming back. They are hoping hers immunity will kill it off

I do agree flights from Italy should be stopped.

We all know that more than 500 will be infected so the figures they quote don’t surprise me

cloud1183 · 12/03/2020 17:27

It sounds very sensible what they are doing. The countries where they have locked down aren’t exactly containing it very well

notangelinajolie · 12/03/2020 17:27

I'm flabbergasted.

It's all very well these scientists looking at their graphs and doing some kind of mathematical calculation on how the behavioral habits of the great British public

Ummm... can I just say we voted for Boaty McBoatface.

110011pi · 12/03/2020 17:27

A pandemic with high mortality rates with over 60s... That would reduce the pension burden, but also the Tory demographic. They must be really torn.

flipflapflopgoesthedolphinshop · 12/03/2020 17:28

@nellodee

Right! We are max two weeks behind Italy. Which means the shit is going to start hitting the fan on...

Monday

Devlesko · 12/03/2020 17:28

I'm more gob smacked by the people on here who believe the shit they've been peddled, and think our gov give a stuff about us.
Second phase is as much of a joke as the lack of attempt to contain.
Is it delaying to keep kids in school and not shut down like everywhere else.
Our gov won't do the right thing because too many people depend on childcare, and of course gp's won't be helping out because of high risk.
We are a nation of working parents, short of getting in armed services to provide childcare to essential workers, there's nothing they can do.
No way, will they allow the economy to fall slightly, when they can practice eugenics.
i just hope those who support these actions are fit and well and have no aging relatives or those with underlying health conditions.

Porcupineinwaiting · 12/03/2020 17:29

Um which countries would that be @cloud? Singapore? Taiwan?

Mummytoonlychild · 12/03/2020 17:29

What do they mean about continuous cough? My daughter has had a cough for a few days so do I keep her off school? And I've had a cough for just over 5 week's

UYScuti · 12/03/2020 17:29

I thought the explanation sounded very clear and sensible, there's no way to stop this becoming endemic, all they can do is try to manage things

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 12/03/2020 17:31

Why is Singapore, also a small island, doing so well at stopping the spread, then, @DoubleAction? www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/03/12/814522489/singapore-wins-praise-for-its-covid-19-strategy-the-u-s-does-not

UYScuti · 12/03/2020 17:31

the high level of deaths in italy and china is thought to be linked to higher levels of smoking in older people there

HotPenguin · 12/03/2020 17:31

@DGRossetti unfortunately "Get Corona done" sounds exactly what the strategy is - rip of the plaster, short sharp shock, a stiff upper lip we'll get us through.

CornflakeBreath · 12/03/2020 17:32

It feels like they are more concerned about lonely elderly people than everyone in general.
