Israeli Eurovision: how low can you go?

Redebs · 04/03/2024 09:21

Israeli entry in Eurovision song contest is likely to be a song called 'October Rain' sung by trans-identifying 'Eden 'Golan'.

My previous thread was deleted for pointing this out.

Do you need an account to see what the songs are?

EasterIssland · 15/05/2024 15:26

Thanks. Says it needs an account to me so can’t see the data.

I’m looking Spotify at the moment, country plays
Italy 65m
Netherlands 59m
france 29m
spain 18m
ukraine 16m
Switzerland 15m
Croatia 13m
Israel 8m
ireland 7m
portugal 2m

its not an indicative of how likeable you’re because the same person can hear to the same song several times i guess. But it also reminds me of the televote, where the same person can vote 20 times for the same person for 20€.

I’ve seen joost is in several countries in the top 50

ScrollingLeaves · 15/05/2024 15:31

Thank you for the names and for explaining that it isn’t necessarily a ranking of likeability as one song might be liked a lot by the same person.

Yes but I’d also expect the people that really liked the song on Eurovision to listen to the same song several times (if I spend my money on a song, i.e providing 20 votes), is because I must really like it

the case of Spain is special … it was one of the last ones in the Eurovision but it’s really liked in Spain so I guess they had bumped it up

quantumbutterfly · 15/05/2024 15:47

It's a cracking song and she has a marvellous voice. Nicely done Israel.

keenforhelp · 15/05/2024 17:10

So many anti-Israel posters on this thread trying their best to convince themselves that Israel does not have a lot of supporters.

That’s alright if she is loved by so many I’m pretty sure she’ll have a successful career as a singer ahead once she’s done with her training at IDF.

So many anti-Israel posters
People aren't anti Israel they are anti the Israeli governments actions in Gaza

trying their best to convince themselves that Israel does not have a lot of supporters.
It doesn't bother me personally if Israel have lots of supporters people don't hate Israel. My concern, which I have said many times is that I didn't want the Israeli government to use their song doing well in Eurovision as some kind of validation for their actions in Gaza. That was always my concern and I think Netanyahu has linked the two which is a worry. I don't think that is an unrealistic or hateful concern.

I hope so.
I admire people who serve their country, and there are many ways to do so. She could follow Noa Tishby's example.

I've learnt over the course of these threads that if you want to criticis Israeli actions in Gaza you must also criticis Hamas actions in the same post otherwise you'll be accused of hating Israeli or antisemitism. That's what I try to do now. Even if you do that, you still sometimes get accused of it. Loads of posters just don't get it or maybe believe that you can just be anti killing people regardless of who is doing it.

I'm sorry it was so hard for the artists bullying one entrant. Poor them. How awful that they had to suffer a hostile environment that they created.

I can’t translate the article you posted but
I have read Nemos complaint regards them
not allowing in the Pride flag
which has been allowed in previous years. He did sneak one in as it’s allowed in the rules

Portugals complaint is down to their video being uploaded an hour after all the other contestants.
You would think they’d get everyone’s ready first before loading any up.

Ive never heard of so much trouble before. Or maybe we just don’t hear about it.

25milesfromhome · 14/05/2024 09:34

Yes, it's a shocking state of affairs.
Let's review:
Ireland's act stopped just short of sacrificing a goat onstage and was so offensive to some members of their own country they started a campaign to prevent Bambie Thug representing Ireland.

Finland's act, naked from the waist down onstage, appeared to spend the rest of the evening displaying his ball sack out the side of his denim hot pants.

Netherland's act disqualified for allegedly violent/criminal behaviour that has led to an accelerated prosecution.

UK's act appeared to be recreating some sort of orgy in a grotty public toilet.

A group of white Europeans expended an unreasonable amount of time and energy harassing a member of an ethnic minority with a healthy dash of cultural appropriation thrown in.

The customary political voting from the jurors, which breaks Eurovision rules.

It was definitely the inclusion of Israel that lowered the tone and brought the whole venerable institution into disrepute, for shame.

Ah, I see, so Israel wanted to be part of an already disreputable shower of shit. How odd. Why on earth does it ever take part?

quantumbutterfly · 16/05/2024 08:21

To raise the tone?

Couldn’t say really, maybe for the same reasons all the other countries want to take part? Are you new to Eurovision?

Poor old Bambie Thug, always lagging one place behind Eden Golan.

Alternative/goth/pagan is always likely to be a bit more niche than mainstream power ballad, and there's room in the music industry for both. Both artists performed well and have released technically competent music of very different styles.

See, I would’ve said goth/pagan/witch scene has been mainstream for a really long time and taking it to Eurovision is about as far from niche as you could get. I agree that both artists represented their chosen mediums well.

No, it was a throwaway joke that you’ve taken a bit too seriously.
Are you genuinely shocked? Their performance got a great reception and scored highly so I’m not sure why it would come as such a surprise that people are listening to it. Eurovision’s a one and done for me so I wouldn’t listen to any of the songs again but people are all different and some of them have terrible taste in music.
