Israeli Eurovision: how low can you go?

1000 replies

Redebs · 04/03/2024 09:21

Israeli entry in Eurovision song contest is likely to be a song called 'October Rain' sung by trans-identifying 'Eden 'Golan'.

My previous thread was deleted for pointing this out.

It seems that not all Palestinians are appreciative of the support from Bambie Thug:

You clearly haven't seen what the Israeli government and ambassador to Ireland have said about the Irish so yes it is a low but unfortunately not a baseless statement

So I'm ok to say that Palestinian supporters hate Israelis? I can provide evidence of hateful comments made by Palestinian government officials if that helps? Or would you take issue with that?

Although having said that, no one should be speaking ill of a whole nation, which I assume is what they've done? They don't speak for every Israel supporter though!

Maybe try a little bit harder with the pronouns after having just been made aware of it by another poster.

It's possible complaints were made about it before Saturday, that's just not what I've read. Happy to be proven wrong though, in which case I won't hold that against them anymore. Still don't like them though 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also didn't like the Norwegian song but did think the Spanish one should have done better than they did. I have all sorts of opinions about the performances not influenced by the nationality of the performer in question.

Yes I had edited one post with the correct pronouns and forgot to edit the other

I have read that a complaint was made and the EBU agreed with it but then on the Saturday informed them they were withdrawing it or something like that. Bambie Thug doesn't speak Israeli so they were clearly told what was said by the Israeli broadcaster and no doubt whoever reported it to them encouraged them to make a complaint. They are part of a team not just an individual

Dulra · 14/05/2024 15:55

I see I had a post deleted probably because I used a curse word. I'll rephrase it.

It is clear you want to continue with slagging off Bambie Thug so I'll leave you to it. I think it is a pretty nasty pile on but what do I know.

No idea why it was deleted, don't think I even saw the post.

But it's not a pile on. It's a discussion. You are for some reason taking the comments personally which I don't really get. But yes, thank you for leaving us to it and for letting us talk about a topic of our choosing. Might kind of you!

It's a discussion
A discussion that includes a lot of nasty comments slung at them. Not my definition of a discussion but not sure why expected I anything more from Mumsnet

You are for some reason taking the comments personally which I don't really get
Not taking them personally just don't like to see character assassinations as has been happening here. People are obviously enjoying it so as I said I'll leave you to it

Humdingerydoo · 14/05/2024 16:13

Is it character assassination when it is an Israeli who has done or said something outrageous? Like for example the ambassador in the UK who everyone was having a massive go at a few months ago? Or was it acceptable because you agreed with what everyone was saying?

EasterIssland · 14/05/2024 16:19

I’ve seen news about more delegations requesting information about why the hostile environment was permitted by EBU

this one is from Netherlands

The Netherlands made an official report to the organization of the Eurovision Song Contest on Friday because of the unsafe atmosphere in the Malmö Arena. AVROTROS confirms to NU.nl that there was an unsafe atmosphere, especially in the so-called delegation bubble.

I didn't see the post, but as this is Mumsnet, where pretty much any swearing is allowed, I don't think a curse word would be a deletion reason.

Although based on some of my deletions, who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well quite.

Most people outwith the pro pal bubble could have said this would be the case

Humdingerydoo · 14/05/2024 16:44

"Why have you allowed this hostile environment that I helped create? I demand answers!"

@keenforhelp That clear enough for you?

No, not at all. Your explanation further actually makes it worse, but as its veering going off topic il leave it be.

Good idea as you were digging yourself into a hole.

Limesodaagain · 14/05/2024 17:56

Parkingt111 · 14/05/2024 13:11

@keenforhelp you specifically said the attitudes ie victim blaming (which you said Eden has been subjected to) is one of the reasons why the 'IDF are 'determined to finish the job'

I agreed that the treatment she recieved by some was appalling like the booing and protests outside her hotel room, but disagree that it is one of the causes for the ongoing attacks.

Perhaps it was badly worded by yourself but that isn't why they are attacking Rafah so why would you link the two? And yes it is distasteful to do so in my opinion.

I agree that the attacks on innocent civilians in Gaza should not be linked to the horrible bullying of the Israeli contestant. There is no equivalence or link.
I have a lot of respect for your posts because you have never been less than respectful for others despite your understandable pain over the suffering of Palestinians. I’m just sorry that some people who claim to support Palestinians are undermining your cause with their behaviour.

I agree to but I did not link the DEATH THREATS (is this bullying or is it a criminal act worthy of years of imprisonment) to attacks on Gaza.

I made it very clear that the IDF are aware that the Jewish state needs to be protected due to the number of people who want to eradicate the state and death threats to a contestant seem to indicate to me that the IDF are justified in wanting to eradicate Hamas. Hamas uses their citizens as human shields by the way.

Limesodaagain · 14/05/2024 18:22

I think what we can all agree that Bambie Thug / they / witch / camp singer on Eurovision/ whatever … is entirely irrelevant and nothing they has said or done speaks of anything but self promotion.

Edited to add - I am 100 % Irish ( if that matters to anyone)

Bicyclethief · 14/05/2024 18:32

Bambi's Thugg, rent a rebel for any cause.

I wonder how many Irish really support her and the Irish government with their stance.

No one hates Irish people, they are one the most likes people in the world!

Interesting that the Palestinian ‘resistance’ are described as religious fighters before anything else which is contrary to the western pro Palestinian supporters insisting this is not a religious war, it’s a war over land.

That’s an interesting point. Religion/ /culture/land are all the same thing in the end. You control the land you control the religion.
Religious fanaticism is dangerous and I understand why some Palestinians don’t want to be associated with it.
I think all the Abrahamic religions ( Judaism, Christian and Islam) are unhappy with witchcraft and demons so Bambie Thug is probably clueless about the cultural sensibilities.

You don't need to wonder. The majority of Irish people fully support the government stance on Palestine.

Bamby won the Irish song contest to represent Ireland at Eurovision so people clearly support her. I haven't heard or seen anything to suggest that has changed. Like everything with music she isn't to everyone's taste

Why Ireland is one of the most pro-Palestinian nations in the world

One of the most pro-Palestinian nations in the world is not an Arab or Muslim country. It's not even in the Middle East. Polls show Ireland has some of the highest support for the Palestinians.

That’s an interesting link @Dulra.
I think you’re a lot younger than me -your Ireland is probably different from mine. I think you genuinely care about the injustice being done to Palestinians but just be careful that that your passion for justice for one group doesn’t blind you to hate for another.

I doubt I'm younger than you. I am not sure what you mean by my Ireland being different to yours. If you still live there you'll have to highlight where the opposition to the government's position on Palestine is because I haven't seen anything substantial.

just be careful that that your passion for justice for one group doesn’t blind you to hate for another.
I have been clear on these threads that I am pro justice and equality for all I am not blinded by hate of any group, I don't hate any group. I work in social inclusion and justice there is no place for hate and it would not be tolerated

The Irish public also gave Israel one of the top marks (10).

The poll you posted was years ago. There's actually more recent polls that support your point. However, things change, it will be interesting to see what they say in a couple of years time.
