This is so so sad 💔 this war has been horrific but it's things like this that often get overlooked, why oh why is a fertility clinic being bombed?

The report is from sky
A single Israeli shell destroyed more than 4,000 embryos when it struck Gaza's largest fertility clinic in December, it has emerged,
The explosion blasted the lids off five liquid nitrogen tanks at Gaza City's Al Basma IVF centre, causing to evaporate the -180C liquid holding the embryos and 1,000 more specimens of sperm and unfertilized eggs.
"We know deeply what these 5,000 lives, or potential lives, meant for the parents, either for the future or for the past," said Bahaeldeen Ghalayini, 73, the Cambridge-trained obstetrician and gynaecologist who established the clinic in 1997.
At least half of the couples can no longer produce sperm or eggs to make viable embryos, he said.
"My heart is divided into a million pieces."

Devastating. All those hopes and dreams deliberately ruined for absolutely no reason other than maliciousness.

I have embryos in a freezer. I know the years of heartache, stress and in many cases huge amounts of money that go into getting that far into the journey. My heart goes out to those who have had their little embabies destroyed.

Worrying but not entirely surprising if true

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that, according to Egyptian sources, the US has agreed to the Israeli plan for a military operation in Rafah in exchange for a limited response against Iran

It cites an Egyptian source that spoke with the London-based Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

The Guardian has been unable to independently verify the reports.

Exactly, extremely distressing if true but unsurprising given the actions of the US to date.

God help the people of Gaza if this goes ahead. I can't bear even thinking about what will happen to them.

@ConnieCounter as you say it doesn't bear thinking about Sad

This is where we get to when we 'think of people as things.'

My guess is that the US does not want to get sucked into a wider regional war and Israel has indicated that they are likely to go ahead anyway.

From the Israeli Government's viewpoint, they cannot declare victory until they've taken on the last Hamas brigades. I doubt it will work, but here we are.

I'm dreading any form of ground operation in Rafeh. I can't see how it can be done in a way that spares civilians and they've got nowhere to go. The north is a wasteland.

Kindatired · 18/04/2024 21:39

Tail wagging dog again. Probably money changing hands.

AIPAC ‘s super PAC possibly . Or AIPAC funds channeled more discretely via local organisations

Biden has managed to get ahead but it’s not just a presidential election and it’s tight.

Biden was loosing ground due to the surge in anti Israeli feeling because of the impending famine but he can’t get ahead without AIPAC so he’s caught. He has no backbone- he’s a disgrace

Some how I don’t think it will stop at Rafah. I can see IDF bombing Rafah and then returning to deal with Iran. That’s is what I would do if Netanyahu and his war cabinet. After all - if Iran want to retaliate after further attack by Israel - US will still defend Israel.

Israel does not seem to have appreciably changed its course of action at behest of US. Why think it will change now?

DomPom47 · 19/04/2024 06:50

Most decent humans given the facts support Palestine.
Unfortunately US and UK politicians do not and that means the death warrant of the Palestinian people have been signed.
October is mentioned with a wilful change of conversation for anything else e.g forhet 1947/1948 because that’s in the past that’s not important, Israel is hailed as the only democracy in the Middle East - a democracy that doesn’t let journalists into Gaza, a democracy that arrests children without charge, a democracy that kills innocent people, a democracy that robs other people of their homes with the many many illegal settlements, a democracy where you have politicians calling for the total destruction of Palestinians- the Israeli government as it stands is evil in its actions to Palestinians and this happens without impunity because of the fact that the US and UK act as bystanders.
Totally ashamed to see what is happening. If any other country had attacked an embassy it would have been an issue but as it’s Israel it’s a case of “yeah but no but…”, Iran attacks Israel and its shame on Iran disproportionate action etc. Israel has now attacked Iran and US and UK politicians will give their support. This conflict will get worse and it is primarily the fault of the US and UK governments and the fact that they are so blinded by whatever lobby group they have supporting Israel. People are absolutely deluded if they believe the argument that this would be allowed if it were any other country in the world acting the way it did outside of Israel.

Ex Israeli Officer speaks about raiding Palestinian homes at night, waking children up and taking over their homes to use as an Israeli Military Base. He said he felt like he was the terrorist! This is an old video.

@DomPom47
I too don’t understand the hailing of a democracy as if that means a democracy doesn’t or won’t commit genocide. Germany was a democracy when it elected Hitler who then did the worst genocide ever, the Holocaust. The US was a democracy all the while successive Presidents did a slow burn genocide against the Native Americans (US ensured this was excluded from the formal definition of genocide). The U.K. was a democracy when it did both of its genocides against the Irish (the second by deliberate starvation, very much like Gaza) and its genocide in Kenya. I am sure there are more examples I am missing.

KestrelMoon · 19/04/2024 17:02

@Polka83
The IDF have been bombing Rafah since October 2023, all the way south to the border crossing with Egypt. The feared IDF action in Rafah is a ground assault.

Polka83 · 19/04/2024 19:59

@KestrelMoon

Thank you- I heard the Israeli government are buying tents to evacuate the region. There’s over a million people in Rafah and they have bought 40,000 tents to house 500,000. So much for human dignity and I can’t imagine they are going to help feed them. I wonder how this is going to work in practice - are they going to let all men go? Some of the Israeli stats suggest all men who they have killed were Hamas!

Barhoum also lost his wife, Rawan Radwan, and their 5-year-old daughter Alaa.“This is a world devoid of all human values and morals,” Barhoum told The Associated Press Saturday morning, crying as he cradled and gently rocked the body of Alaa in his arms. “They bombed a house full of displaced people, women and children. There were no martyrs but women and children.”
