That must be un-imaginably awful for your friend's family - how will anyone recover from this

Something like 90-95% of central Khan Younis is gone

Scirocco · 11/04/2024 14:47

I am so sorry @Parkingt111 .

The IDF has left it in a state of desolation. I remember hearing a speech that said the bombing alone of the Gaza Strip was the equivalent (minus the radiation) of 2 nuclear bombs.

The Israeli government says "forces have pulled out... people can return to their homes...". Several slight issues with that, as we can see.

I think I'm well aware of who Ismail Haniyeh is, thank you.

Please don't try to explain who my 'beef' should be with. All that does is show that you don't have a clear understanding of what's going on.

Hamas carried out a terrorist attack. There were several options open for how this could be responded to. This included options which could feasibly have led to the removal of Hamas from government of the Gaza Strip, removal of key individuals (from, well, life, because there is clear capability among relevant forces both from Israel and its military allies to carry out targeted operations), arrests and trials of people in relation to 7/10, release of hostages, and following the trails back to the individuals responsible for the planning/timing/etc. Instead, collective punishment of an oppressed and largely innocent population started within hours.

There was no need to destroy the Gaza Strip (again). There was no need to kill and maim tens of thousands of people, or to create a man-made famine, or to engage in acts so horrible that they're being investigated as war crimes and may meet the threshold for the legal definition of genocide.

So, actually, I think the Israeli government probably should contribute financially. You know, seeing as they were the ones who chose to destroy it in this way.

Brief explanation from Jens Laerke, spokesperson for OCHA on why COGAT_IDF and OCHAs figures for aid trucks into Gaza are so different

“Trucks that go in, screened by COGAT, are typically only half full. That is a requirement that they have put in place for screening purposes. When we count the trucks on the other side, when they have been reloaded, they are full,” he said.

May I also ask, @Alstreena , why, when the last couple of posts have been about upsetting news received by another poster, you felt that this was the right time to post that instead of maybe expressing sympathy for a fellow poster or even just waiting a little bit in view of the sensitivity of what was being said? A case of selective empathy, perhaps?

So, selective empathy then.

Thank you for showing everyone what you truly are.

And I would suggest that, in view of the fact your post has now been deleted for breaching Talk Guidelines, you might want to reflect on that.

No, just someone with basic human decency and compassion for others.

@Alstreena

Do you actually understand what people use the internet, forums and this board for?

Many people who post on this board have lost loved ones in this conflict, or know people directly affected.

One of the main points of Mumsnet is for supportive and respectful discussions. If you can't consider that other people have feelings that should be respected even if you disagree with them on certain political points, I'm sure you can find a sub-reddit somewhere where you can be as unkind to people as you want.

Some people just don't care. I'm just going to ignore that poster because engaging just provides oxygen. There's been a few like her in the last couple of weeks.

@Parkingt111, I'm so very sorry for your friend's family. Also for you! It hits "different" when it's someone you know, doesn't it? Even if, on an abstract level, you knew how horrific it all was all along!

Much love to your friend and to you! Her family deserved better! 💔

Parkingt111 · 11/04/2024 22:06

@HeidiInTheBigCity thank you yes it does, also really hits home how privileged we are to have a roof over our head and be relatively safe in comparison. It's like we are living in a separate world and they are in a never ending nightmare.
Really do pray for a ceasefire soon

Parkingt111 · 11/04/2024 14:12

Khan younis 😭 the Palestinians went back to see what they could get from their homes after Israeli forces withdrew. Its been totally destroyed, the devastation is unimaginable

This looks like a horror film. My brain can’t process the images we are seeing. It is absolutely devastating that this has been not only allowed to happen but cheered on.

Mags48 · 11/04/2024 22:18

@Parkingt111 I’m very sorry for your friend & their family. I remember early on that people talked about having no words to express their sorrow & grief - because our brains can’t process the magnitude of loss. Sorry just isn’t enough. I hope one day that Gaza is rebuilt and that her people get to live in peace and freedom.

TheABC · 11/04/2024 22:27

Does anyone know if we are closer to a ceasefire? None of this can be fixed until we can get aid in and some stability.

There were rumours of one coming soon.
yesterday several relatives of one of Hamas members were killed and Hamas has said this wouldn’t stop them seeking the ceasefire.
however, I was just reading the hostages thread and apparently Hamas has said they might not have as many alive hostages to exchange which is one of the reasons for a ceasefire so unsure how would that affect the deals.

I keep on thinking about Shakespeare recently. Specifically, about Julius Caesar. Even more specifically about that one famous monologue by Marc Anthony!

"Friends, Britons, countrymen (and women - because this is 2024, not ancient Rome; never even mind "Ancient Rome, as imagined by a Renaissance playwright") [...] but Israel is a democracy!"

... and yet, in terms of the rhetorical tactics employed, it reminds me so much of right now!

I'm sure you didn't mean any offence, but please be careful with your words. Let's not forget that these " alive hostages " waiting to be " exchanged " are very much still real people with families who are crying everyday over their absence. They are not just political pawns or players in a " deal ", so to be described in such dispassionate terms is very hurtful.
