I'm sure you didn't mean any offence, but please be careful with your words. Let's not forget that these " alive hostages " waiting to be " exchanged " are very much still real people with families who are crying everyday over their absence. They are not just political pawns or players in a " deal ", so to be described in such dispassionate terms is very hurtful.

No of course I didn’t want to offend anyone. The info I’ve written In there about the hostages is from the hostages thread if anyone wants to know info about it.

Hey @SpiderPlantBaby maybe quit schooling @EasterIssland on her phrasing - English isn't her first language it's quite clear what she meant and that she wasn't being unkind or disrespectful

Scirocco · 12/04/2024 01:27

@SpiderPlantBaby I'm sure @EasterIssland would not have intended to come across as dispassionate or to cause hurt. English isn't her first language - sometimes it can be really hard to get nuance across in a second or third language.

Now that you are clear about @EasterIssland 's intentions you might consider apologising to her rather than taking further offence

Apologise? What on earth are you on about? My post referred to the use of language and being mindful that we don't dehumanize people caught up in this conflict. Words used carelessly cause offense.@Scirocco explained that the poster in question used English as a second language. Unfortunately I don't have the gift of psychic powers, so wouldn't know that. I hope that's clear enough for you. I'll take your apology though for trying to spin it.

EasterIssland · 12/04/2024 06:29

Thanks @Efacsen and @Scirocco this is from the thread I’m referring to

It has been reported by US media that Hamas does not have 40 living hostages who fit the criteria needed for an exchange under a proposed ceasefire deal”.

so I wasn’t trying to be hurtful to anyone. I was mainly referring to this (which is actually from a newspaper).

anyway. Will there be a ceasefire? Hopefully one soon and hopefully a permanent one

Scirocco · 12/04/2024 07:46

That's one heck of a headline from Haaretz.

Efacsen · 12/04/2024 08:01

Can't open the Haaretz link [a me problem not the link] but assume it's the same piece I read by an anti-Netanyahu opposition Knesset politician - hence the inflammatory headline

Efacsen · 12/04/2024 08:04

Thanks for posting that article @Mags48 the maps alone are worth looking at

Efacsen · 12/04/2024 10:41

UN have visited Khan Younis

OCHA say assessment by UN team in Khan Younis found 'widespread destruction' and 'unexploded 1,000 pound bombs'

''Street and public spaces in Khan Younis are littered with unexploded ordnance posing a severe risk to civilians, especially for children. Our team found unexploded 1,000 pound bombs lying on the main intersection and inside schools.

Residents who returned to the area, and some who remained during the fighting, told the team about the dire shortages of food and water and the loss of critical health services due to the destruction of the al-Nasser and al-Amal hospital.”

You can find this article on archive ph
I am trying a link from what I just read, but if it doesn’t work, you can put the headline into archive ph.

I am not quite sure what to make of it, as I am not sure what the Israel government hopes winning would be like.

ScrollingLeaves · 12/04/2024 14:37

Sorry, that link didn’t work but anyone can read that Haaretz article on Archive ph.

This is what is happening to children in Gaza.

From that article, referring to the grounds around the hospital:

"Now there is a huge and spreading cemetery so that the graves of the newly dead are now displacing the shelters of the barely-living," he said.

What a dreadful sort of equation.

Parkingt111 · 12/04/2024 21:12

None of the UN's aid missions to the north of Gaza was allowed to take place today. Each one was denied access. Does anyone know why? The north is still suffering the most right now

Scirocco · 13/04/2024 00:02

@Parkingt111 I wondered if it could be partly related to the security threat from Iran? If the IDF are preparing to defend against a suspected imminent attack, that could reduce resources and heighten scrutiny? I don't know though.

Efacsen · 13/04/2024 04:08

Sadly seems like more of the same and OCHA is countering the IDF_COGAT line that aid to northern gaza isn't a problem any more

Eylon Levy [thought he'd been 'let go'] replied to OCHAs tweet saying 44 private contractors trucks had gone into northern gaza today. Also elsewhere the 'new gate' said to have been opened today

Difficult to see where the truth lies which is doubtless partly intentional - removing UNWRA from the equation was always about reducing oversight/accountability IMO in addition to the claims that they are 'useless' corrupt etc

Anyway US with all it's surveillance drones and satellites can literally see what's happening and said today that they're still not happy with the amount of aid so,.....

Situation with Iran is understandably distracting attention from the developing famine so OCHA needs to keep flagging it up

,

Efacsen · 13/04/2024 04:17

In slightly better news Anera are returning to doing aid deliveries after pausing their work following the WFC deaths - can't find it now but they said they still don't feel it's safe*/workers are frightened but situation is so bad that they feel they 'have to' and their workers support that despite huge misgivings

Brave people

*the new system for co-ordinating with the IDF hasn't materialised yet - US also said IDF needs to get on with making this happen

EasterIssland · 13/04/2024 07:41

edit. wrong thread.

DomPom47 · 13/04/2024 08:25

Anyone who says it isn’t an occupation and it isn’t an apartheid system and the plight of the Palestinians isn’t dire needs to take a real hard look at themselves. If we cannot accept the faults of this and previous Israeli governments there is no way forward and peace.
https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5rdMB0oUyK/?igsh=dm9ieGV3b204cW01

Again as I have expressed in my previous posts what happened on October was 100% wrong but the problems facing Palestinians did not start in October and we all need to do what little or big acts that we can to make this crystal clear to people. We need to challenge people who value one life more than the other. Who simply turn the other way to what is happening to Palestinians.

I hope every single one of those take hostage are looked after and return to their families alive and well. In that same breath I have the humanity and the decency to say that Israel’s actions have been completely heinous in this so called war against an occupied group of people - disproportionate in response, against international law, utterly brutal in their treatment of Palestinians.

Again, I sadden to add that when Gaza is completely flattened we will see settlements. We will not get to the stage where Israel is challenged properly (e.g arms sales stopped) from either the USA or UK. History will be shaming those who stood by and looked the other way and did not challenge what is happening. I was able to explain to my primary school aged child exactly what happened after her questions from the news on the radio and she had a more decent grasp of what is happening then spineless USA and UK politicians who are total hypocrites and know full well that if this was another country doing this than Israel they would not be so blind or mute to what is happening.
