Conflict in the Middle East

What is going on on the left? Gaza/Israel conflict

1000 replies

Notsuretoputit · 10/12/2023 18:34

I am left wing, I wouldn’t consider myself anything other. I absolutely support Israel, have no problem understanding and supporting Zionism, and am absolutely horrified by the rising levels of anti-semitism in the UK.

It is to my despair that much of that anti-semitism is being perpetrated by those on the left. People I like, consider friends, who are tolerant and who I would never, ever have considered racist or anti-Semitic are plastering their Facebook walls with pro-Hamas TikTok propaganda. These are not teenagers naively believing propaganda, these are people who’ve spend years active in (left wing) politics.

I’ve read a lot in recent weeks about the far left’s historical problem with anti-semitism, but how can it be that nice, friendly, socially conscious people are indulging in this insane display of anti-semitism? Actively showing support for a terrorist organisation? Refusing to believe Hamas is guilty of any crimes, or that they have an excellent propaganda machine currently in operation. What is going on?

I think this so called anti-semetism hysteria has gone way too far

Jeremy fan in the house me thinks!

Good luck with the thread folks. I will come back at some point probably but if I reply to that comment now the mods won't be happy that's for sure

sunshinesupermum · 10/12/2023 19:50

Where are you seeing videos purporting all Palestinians are terrorists? Do provide a link EasterIssland

Meanwhile I refer you to Ghazi Hamad a leader of Hamas who has stated that Hamas will repeat October 7, (pogrom) until Israel is destroyed. That is what 'To The River To The Sea' means.

Israel has to destroy buildings as underneath are the miles and miles of tunnels through which Hamas transports its armoury.

Livinginanotherworld · 10/12/2023 19:51

Notsuretoputit · 10/12/2023 19:02

They weren’t fine in October and won’t be fine in the future given Hamas’ vow to repeat those atrocities again and again.

Hamas is firing rockets into Israel now, and it is only the iron dome protecting them. Because they are not being used as human shields for their government, as Palestinian civilians are for Hamas.

Sadly Gaza have no iron dome, or an army, or an airport, or a way out, they are not allowed because Israel says so.
You are surprised at your left wing friends being pro-Palestinian ? Maybe they don’t like the thought of thousands of children and babies being bombed to pieces. Maybe they don’t agree with the people of Gaza being denied food, water and medical aid.

I think your post is tone deaf, the anti-semitism card is being overplayed now, it’s tiring, no one wants to hear it.
If I’ve said this once, I’ve said it a thousand times, this didn’t start on Oct 07, it started 75 years ago. Hamas are not in the West Bank or East Jerusalem either.

Notsuretoputit · 10/12/2023 19:53

LivStanshall · 10/12/2023 19:36

I am also left wing but haven’t seen any of this. None of my friends who are left wing are saying anything antisemitic and no-one is supporting Hamas over Israel. I have a lot of Jewish friends, including left wing Jewish friends and I wouldn’t tolerate any antisemitic posts. However, I am not getting my news from TikTok. I’m not saying those posts don’t exist but I haven’t seen anything. Maybe you should give yourself a break from it all, OP.

I’m pleased you haven’t seen anything.

I think you’ve misread my post slightly - I do not get my news from TikTok, but many people I know do and republish on different platforms.

But you don’t need to look online to see the serious problem the left has here. Motions upon motions coming to political meetings demanding a ceasefire, demanding Israel stops defending itself, demanding Keri Starmer calls for a ceasefire. Accompanied with speeches about how awful Israel is for reacting to Hamas at best, and advocating for Hamas and suggesting Israel should no longer exist at worst. Marches all over the country where many left wing organisations, including anti-racism organisations, walking alongside, and in some cases carrying, anti-Semitic placards.

I’m not entirely sure what you mean by take a break, but I don’t think it’s at all a good idea for those of us on the left who can see what’s happening to turn a blind eye. The left has a serious problem with anti-semitism, and it is being compounded by many left wingers who support Israel almost being intimidated into not saying so, because the fervour for anti-Jewish and anti-Israel attitudes has become so intense.

there have been comments in mn saying that Palestinians are terrorists or Hamas supporters One of the reasons is that they voted them in.

also the latest video from the weekend trying to picture the Palestinians with guns as terrorists. Which was taken down not long after it was proof to be Israel propaganda

sunshinesupermum · 10/12/2023 19:12

I agree with you Notsuretoputit Antisemitism has never been so high in my long lifetime. The war was begun by the terrorists, (Hamas) and triggered a response by Israel that has fuelled antisemitism. This has been simmering on university campuses for years paid for and encouraged by the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign.

Hamas has stated again recently that they will continue to rape and pillage as they did on October 7 until Israel is eradicated. A true genocide of the Jewish people. Again.

Israel spends money on protecting its citizens with the Iron Dome deflecting constant rocket bombardment by Hamas, (unmentioned in mainstream media) while Hamas spends its money on building tunnels underneath homes, schools and hospitals instead of supporting helpless Gazan civilians and saving them from Israeli bombardment.

Edited

A true genocide of the Jewish people.

Unlike an actual genocide of the People of Gaza !

Can you please describe to me the idyllic life Palestinians had before 1948?

I am so curious why the Palestinians had no issue being occupied by the British, before that the Ottomans, before that someone else....there has not been self rule in that part of the world since the Romans conquered Judea 2000 years ago. (and then it was a Jewish state).

Is it just the the Palestinian people only object to being ruled over by Jews but not by the British (Christians) or the Ottomans (muslim?)??

I would love a serious answer from someone on this.

sunshinesupermum · 10/12/2023 19:57

Livinginanotherworld the reason that Gaza has no Iron Dome is because Hamas spends the billions of dollars it gets in aid on arms and not on protecting civilians. Palestinians are fodder to the terrorists.
It is not up to you, a non Jew I take it, to state that the antisemitism card is being overplayed.

tempnameforadvice · 10/12/2023 19:57

@MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly has it absolutely spot on.

I am left wing. I support Jewish people. Zionism does not offend me in anyway. I celebrate my Jewish friends and always try to wish them wonderful holidays etc.

I despise terrorism on all levels. Hamas are a terrorist group who have committed atrocities that are unthinkable. We should be working to disband them as we did the Taliban.

What is happening in Gaza is horrific. War crimes are being committed and very, very few people seem to care. It is not the Jewish race that are slaughtering innocent civilians in their thousands, but the leaders of Israel.

Shades of grey is absolutely where we all need to be thinking right now.

Your username is really apt.

You seriously blame Israel for the fact that Gaza has no Iron Dome, despite the massive investment from oil?

Jewish people are finding the constant antisemitism quite tiring, sorry it makes you uncomfortable when we point it out.

Hamas are not in the West Bank or East Jerusalem either.
Wrong! Again!

Notsuretoputit · 10/12/2023 20:01

EasterIssland · 10/12/2023 19:42

In order to achieve this do you support killing thousand of civilians ? Destroying several of their buildings ? Attacking the aid that is entering in the country? Do you support that settlers can kick Palestinians out of their houses? Making up propaganda videos in order to picture all Palestinians as terrorists?

I lack critical comments about these acts in your comments and many of the left people is what they’re criticising. The way israel is trying to achieve the right to exists.

Israel isn’t trying to achieve the right to exist. Israel does exist.

Hamas’ aim is to eradicate Israel, not to make peace with Israel and live side by side. Don’t you understand that?

And I am sick of war, which is always shocking and brutal, being presented as though it's the same as what happened on 7 October, which is an unprecedented level of horror that promises to be repeated.

How dare you minimise it in this way.

Edited to add: I've been on this planet for more than half a century, and I have never seen a war where one side is held responsible for the welfare of the other in the same way as this conflict. WTAF?

Livinginanotherworld · 10/12/2023 20:06

Do you not think it strange that apart from Israel, the USA and the UK, the rest of the world wants a ceasefire, the rest of the world is seeing this group of ”world domination wannabes” for what they are?
Geo-politics is changing since the war on Gaza, the world is turning against the west. BRICS are rapidly becoming the dominant global super power. There are massive changes in power structure coming soon, to the detriment of the west and Israel, who will be there own group against the world.

I took the sentence out of your comment. But I understand it, you will not criticise a single of Israel / idfs actions even the international organisations and people are criticising it. It’s got nothing to do with being left or right. It’s supporting the idea that for a country can kill thousands of people

But this is not a war, a war is when you have two countries with state armed forces fighting against each other.
This is an invasion on a civilian population and infrastructure with no state armed forces, just some local militia with hand made rockets.

PassMeTheCookies · 10/12/2023 20:16

I'm confused at how you condemn a future threat by Hamas to repeat October 7th and yet are in support of Israel, who are repeating October 7th several times a day, every single day, having killed thousands and thousands of innocent civilians, over one third of them babies and children.

I condemn what Hamas did and do not support them, but I am absolutely disgusted by what Israel is doing every day. We're watching thousands of murders live through these tiny screens in our hands and there's such little outrage.

OpenLanes · 10/12/2023 20:16

It's like how a portion of the left latches onto "transwomen are women" etc. Seems to be a like of aggression, protests and looking for an argument in the name of being "woke" regardless of the complexity. It's easier to find something to get your anger out about if you pick a topic and fixate on one side rather than if you look at it objectively considering everyone.

If you think what Israel is doing is repeating 7 October, you really need to get a grip and use Google/YouTube to find out more about it. Don't just rely blindly on your X/TikTok/Insta feed or whatever it is that is informing you.
