My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

At work, we always used to do a 'Secret Santa' by choosing a name on a piece of paper at random. It started off fine for a couple of years, then became a bit jokey then it descended into nastiness - so it all stopped!

It all got a bit too personal!

Smokewhistle · 08/10/2026 23:29

My ex MIL got me a blue toilet seat one Christmas. All nicely wrapped up with my name on it.

My grandmother was the queen of bad presents. Several times she bought me clothes 5 sizes too big despite my Dad informing her multiple times of my size. One year she had been raving for ages about my present so i had high hopes, she bought me a Ted Baker bubble bath set when she knew full well that our flat did not have a bath; the previous tenant my late uncle wheelchair bound. My other grandmother is usually OK but I did get a shower set that said 'Dear Cheryl' on the tag. I still to this day do not know who Cheryl is.

My sister gave me a piece of wood intended to hang on a wall with a papermache of Jesus on it..
She had made it herself.
I am not particularly religious and would certainly never have Jesus up..

I was actually very disappointed as she usually gives thoughtful gifts. This was also the last year she did gifts.

Still felt very odd to throw Jesus in the bin.

My mum used to be very impressed with the Ronco gifts ( buttoneer anyone?) advertised in the 70s/80s and would often buy us one of those . I once got a hunting scene where the clock tower had a real working clock ! I loved her dearly though and she was very generous with her limited resources.

All from MIL

-She used to run a business and gave DH a duffle bag all branded from her company- which she got for free
-Got DH a nylon, black balaclava. We live in coastal SE and DH can't wear anything synthetic, otherwise he sweats. DH often wear shorts for 10mths of the year so I have no idea why she thought he'd need a balaclava?
-One year she bought me a cooking apron which said something like 'The more I eat, the tighter my clothes get!'
-A nylon onesie from primark which was 3 sizes too small
-Matching scarf, beanie and gloves which she'd bought from a craft fayre thing. Very chunky, amateur work and all in HER favourite colour- purple. I do not own 1 purple item.

And I thought my mother buying me a gravy boat for my 40th birthday was bad! Absolutely howling at some of these!

SconehengeRevenge · 08/10/2026 23:52

I gave someone i worked with and didn't like loo roll.

Expecting to see myself named and shamed on here

daisydalrymple · 09/10/2026 00:39

One year MIL gave me and DH a ‘joint’ gift.
bottle of red (DH drinks red, she’s well aware I drink white, mainly fizz)
giant fruit n nut cadburys bar (DH fave, she knows I don’t like dried fruit)
mens socks

It was obviously just a gift for DH that she added my name onto on the gift tag 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
wouldn’t have bothered me at all if she’d given it all addressed to DH and nothing for me. It was just the fact she couldn’t be bothered to hide the fact she got me nothing.

My wonderful MIL always tried her best to buy gifts that meant something to the recipient.

One year, she bought my then 11 year old DS a DVD entitled Jimmy Tarbuck’s Golfing Nightmares, with the aforementioned dressed in golfing gear, cowering underneath a cartoon lightning strike on the cover.

DS had expressed a mild interest in golf 😂.

It remains our most favourite family naff Christmas gift of all time 😁.

SandSandwich · 09/10/2026 01:13

My grandad gave me gloves that had a hole in the palm, clearly not new and of no use at all. He was a tight bastard.

Openmouthinsertfood · 09/10/2026 01:17

Oh dear to some of these, and I thought the pack of pink padded hangers from my mum was bad. Mind you, the year I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic she bought me a £50 Hotel Chocolate chocolate hamper!

My ex MIL got me a blue toilet seat one Christmas. All nicely wrapped up with my name on it.

I would assume this was back in the 70’s ?????

Julynian · 09/10/2026 01:19

I really hope the person comments whose aunt gave them a cushion with their own face on it. I often think of that thread!

allhailtheeyeballsinthesky · 09/10/2026 01:20

My mil hated me, so her best ever present was a pack of 24 wooden clothes pegs, at least they were useful, I never invited her for xmas again

CherryKerry · 09/10/2026 01:22

MIL got a bit doolally in old age so Xmas day was spent texting round the family to find out which men got ladies perfume and which ladies got aftershave so we could swap them 😆.

Same MIL always bought cheese for everyone but didn't want to stink her fridge out, it was generally left in front of the radiator in her conservatory for weeks before. Christmas Eve was generally spent double bagging rancid cheese.....

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 09/10/2026 01:26

My ex boyfriend received a dvd of a crackling fire from his mum.

my ex husband got a partially eaten box of biscuits and I got an opened pack of face cleansing pads from his step mum for Christmas 🤷🏻‍♀️

QuirkyHorse · 09/10/2026 01:27

An ex bought me a pair of bathroom scales that measured your fat content and displayed your BMI. I was a petite, fit and active size 8.

On my wedding day, dh bought me a gift. I was touched, until I opened it. It was a naff bit of pottery, a cat (I think it was) doing laundry on an old dolly board 🤣
What was he thinking?!

He is still shit at gifts, I just buy what I want and he gives me the money now.

Chickadee26 · 09/10/2026 01:46

My other grandmother is usually OK but I did get a shower set that said 'Dear Cheryl' on the tag. I still to this day do not know who Cheryl is.

My late grandmother in law used to call me Brenda, (not my name).

Chickadee26 · 09/10/2026 01:53

A bag of candy penises.

Katflapkit · 09/10/2026 03:45

I helped a friend of mine out and as thank you she got me a free trial pass to join her at the gym her work pays for. I mentioned how soft the towels were in 'spa' area. For Christmas she wrapped a rolled up towel she stole from the gym.

mybiggreenfrog · 09/10/2026 04:07

A friend got a clothing item from SIL for Christmasfrom M&S. Took it back to exchange for something she liked. "Madam, we have not sold this item for 8 years so I'm afraid you can't exchange it".

malloryknox123 · 09/10/2026 05:31

My ex fiancé gave me an electronic sudoku game thing designed exclusively for use on the toilet (it was written on the packaging) and a biography of Sharon Osborne, who I had not heard of at the time. I was quite bemused as I’ve never played sudoku anywhere never mind in the ladies’

ithinkthereforeyouarewrong · 09/10/2026 06:24

I have a well off relative who was always a bit random at Xmas. Sometimes it would be samples of beauty products which had obviously been sent free with whatever products she was buying. Once a used lipstick.
I once had secret Santa at work and got some one I barely knew. The budget was £10 so I got her one of those gift mugs with hot chocolate powder and marshmallows in. I think it cost £7. We all opened our gifts together. Some people had gone way over the budget and the person opening my gift could not conceal her disdain. I felt so embarrassed but I really didn’t think it was a bad gift! And then afterwards everyone immediately said who their SS was so she knew it was me.
