My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

When my DC were something like 7,5 and 3 my BIL (their Uncle) asked what they wanted. I offered a couple of suggestions so he'd be a hit as he was a bit awkward as a person and always spent Boxing Day with us.

He ignored the list-which obviously was his right-and gave them a card which said that he had bought them a goat in Africa.

A lovely thing to do but slightly missed the mark in this case 😂

I did that once for friend who was into that sort of thing. Or so I thought, until she queried why I'd sent her 2 Christmas cards; she hadn't actually read the inside.

Im a bit Meh 🤷 about chrimbo and all its surrounding shenanigans. Prefer a quiet time just us four.
At a new job (a few years ago) I reluctantly agreed to take part in the secret santa. (Note - It is VERY well know and often commented on how very, very small my feet are) My boss picked me out of the hat and I got a 5 pack of mens socks and a scarf that was originally intended for a service user who died xmas week.
Happy fucking chrimas.
Last SS ill ever do.

My aunt who was known to be stingy gave me a small plastic bag containing 8 small wooden butter knives. I was about 10. 🤷‍♀️

SuperSharpShooter · 09/10/2026 13:28

Oh, I've also received opened make up/toiletries from my Mum 😭
My Mums gifts to me would be a whoooole tread on its own.

Drawer lining paper

A crotchet dish cloth. I still laugh about it now

I gave someone i worked with and didn't like loo roll.

Expecting to see myself named and shamed on here

At least it was useful

My XMIL gave me a toaster as ours had broken.

I don’t eat toast, she said it was because her son MUST have his toast in the morning, and couldn’t possibly be expected to make some using the grill. That was too much trouble for him.

Happyjoe · 09/10/2026 13:40

My dad bought me a tyre pump for my van. Actually useful and did thank him but it's not what a 20 something woman wants for Xmas.
My partner bought me a second hand, stained, 2 sizes too small white Elvis jumpsuit from Amazon. Yeah, it went back.

And she didn't give it to him instead?

That's just plain weird!!

My auntie would wrap my cousin's clothes for my b'day - except we were totally different ages and sizes, I couldn't use any of it. Some aunties are crap!

When I was 10 or thereabouts, a relative of mine got me book plates - basically adhesive labels that you stuck on the inside of a book to say who it belonged to. I was bitterly disappointed.

In fairness she did get me some much better gifts in later years!

whereismybike · 09/10/2026 13:52

An ex once gave me a book for Xmas. It was not an author or genre that I had ever shown any interest in (the sort of 'romance' novels featuring young servant girls being saved by dashing rich men) and clearly described as book 3 in a series. He made a point of making sure I saw the RRP printed on the back and claimed it must be a good one for that price. I later found out from a mutual friend that he had bought a box set on sale in costco and given me and each of his female relatives one of them. Ex was fairly well off.

Same ex gave me a ring for my birthday that looked just like some that were very popular in the 90s when we were at school, and usually bought from argos. He claimed to have found it in an antique shop on an overseas trip and paid quite a lot for it. I rather naively thought it must be the original antique version of whatever the popular argos trend was based on. He asked for it back when we split up, and his sister told me later that it was in fact a 90s argos number bought for his high-school girlfriend.

Oh we had one of those Macarena gorillas! We'd just recently taken on a dog who was having a phantom pregnancy, she adopted that as her "puppy" and looked after it for days.

If I remember correctly, didn't the gorilla have on a little red baseball hat and a red and white stripey jumper?

To get back to the OP, I think my worst present was, as is often the case, a Secret Santa at work. I got a nodding South Park figure with its trousers half down for the rear parcel shelf of my car.

Sadly I drove a van, so no rear parcel shelf and had literally never watched an episode of South Park in my life! I swapped it for a bottle of wine that had been gifted to a recovering alcoholic ☹️ (to be fair, it was a massive department so we didn't all know everyone else).

All from MIL

-She used to run a business and gave DH a duffle bag all branded from her company- which she got for free
-Got DH a nylon, black balaclava. We live in coastal SE and DH can't wear anything synthetic, otherwise he sweats. DH often wear shorts for 10mths of the year so I have no idea why she thought he'd need a balaclava?
-One year she bought me a cooking apron which said something like 'The more I eat, the tighter my clothes get!'
-A nylon onesie from primark which was 3 sizes too small
-Matching scarf, beanie and gloves which she'd bought from a craft fayre thing. Very chunky, amateur work and all in HER favourite colour- purple. I do not own 1 purple item.

Oh my goodness I’ve just choked on my cheese sandwich laughing at this 🤣🤣

A well meaning and very Christian aunt once gave every single person in the family a copy of the same book by Billy Graham.

My MIL once gave me a washbag that I had given her for Christmas the previous year. She'd obviously forgotten.

When my aunt died and my parents cleared her house, they found a lot of gifts labelled with the giver's name, so that she would know not to give the item back to the person who'd given it.

PluviophileinRaintown · 09/10/2026 14:14

A plastic comb from an extremely wealthy relative.

Mh67 · 09/10/2026 14:16

My boss got used pyjamas with stains on them from a parent in our nursery.

WildBuilt · 09/10/2026 14:25

A Hostess trolley, proudly decorated with ribbons and balloons, wheeled down the road from the place it had been hidden.
'I thought it would be useful for Christmas Lunch '
Bless him 😃

Not too weird though. Still useable in a bowl of water for your feet, or as drawer scenters.

Our dog had a strong mothering instinct and was always trying to 'adopt' smaller animals. We got her a teddy and she mothered it, she gently carried it round, nuzzled it, cleaned it, protected it for about a year... she was so sweet with it.

Then one day we came in and she had... EATEN ITS EYEBALLS.

Like precisely picked and pulled just its eyeball out.

Aged 10 I would have loved that, I used to make my own! aged 40 something I would love it even more as I don't have time to make my own.

Many years ago an elderly friend was hosting a foreign language student over Christmas. He was so excited about having a UK Christmas and giving her the gift he had bought her.

On Christmas morning she came downstairs to find him sitting at the table which he had laid ready for the breakfast he had prepared for her with a massive parcel, beautifully wrapped, in her place. She had to open it there and then.

He watched with a beaming smile as she unwrapped .......... a bumper pack of Dr Whites Maternity Pads!

He had no idea what they were or any understanding of female needs but they were clearly with other things for ladies so he guessed that they were suitable.

Cheeseplantalltheway · 09/10/2026 14:39

My son (5 years old at the time) was once given a roll of Sellotape by an adult friend of ours.

Friend then told us he'd got it for free!
