My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

I think she quoted me without using the quote button cos it's my exact words.

Quite a few verbatim posts from various threads I am noticing today? What is going on?

INeedAnotherAlibi · 10/10/2026 18:31

Our elderly ‘Aunt’ (not biologically related but a friend of our great grandma with little family of her own) announced one Christmas that she had donated to ‘Rwanda’ in our names. She was more than happy to be waited on us all of Christmas and gleefully accept the gifts we had bought her though!

A great uncle I’ve only met about 3 times in my life sent me a tiny pen knife by overnight delivery so that it got to me just before Christmas. I was about 19.

To be fair it was super useful.

That sounds like a great present. I’d be really happy with that.

I’ve had to budget massively this year for Christmas and started wrapping presents today, I post it all. Not spent much at all on my mum a quarter of what I normally spend but with fancy paper, card and gift bag looks super lovely . I find things on good promotions so I’m not sure she will even realise tbh.

HolyMoly24 · 10/10/2026 18:47

Yeah @OneNewEagle it was quite cool but definitely up there with one of the weirdest. Especially as we didn’t really know each other or ever do gifts.

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · 10/10/2026 19:56

My brother on earth got me a 'blow up boyfriend'

The reason being 'you'll shag owt so you can get some practice in'

Nope,don't get the logic either

I've been nc for 20 years and still get messages from the flying monkeys that he misses me

This was the straw that broke the camels back and I don't want to know

Stockings and suspenders. From my MIL.

Jesus Christ 😅

I did a clanger myself actually. DH had a favourite Emma Bridgewater mug that he broke years ago. I found a secondhand one, stated excellent condition, on eBay. Thrilled to purchase.

It arrived and they'd packed it beautifully. Lovely inner box, filled with pretty tissue paper. So I wrapped it and waited for my extreme brownie points on Christmas Day.

DH unwrapped, was thrilled. Removed scrunched up tissue paper from inside the mug. It had crusty dried leftover coffee in it. Like they'd tipped their drink away and thought "yeah, I'll sell that right now" 🙈😂

DH brings it up all the fucking time 😁

My DP bought me a Stitch plush a couple of years ago. I opened it and was very confused.

She said, I thought you loved Stitch? I have never once mentioned it, nor seen the film!

Smudgesmith · 10/10/2026 20:59

My aunty got my earrings. Never had my ears pierced. She got my cousin slippers. Size 8. He's a clear 11. We decided to stop extended family presents a few years after. It was always random, thoughtless or useless presents from her. We often thought re gifts. She was a teacher.

StockingsByTheFire · 10/10/2026 21:13

Oh actually, I have an equally shit one from DH

Probably in retaliation for the filthy Emma Bridgewater mug.

I received a rock tumbler. But why DH, I enquired. Because you wanted one, was his adamant reply. I asked in what realm of the imagination had I expressed a need to polish small rocks, loudly, in a home tumbling machine.

To this day he insists I specifically asked for one. I can only think he dreamt it.

An old friend once got me a banana yellow lipstick for Christmas. BANANA FUCKING YELLOW 🍌

I have no idea if that shade would have looked good on anyone but it definitely done me, a pale redhead, absolutely no favours at all 😂

sashh · 11/10/2026 14:53

Oh I have a birthday one, my mother again.

My parents came down to see me for a birthday. My Dad loves musicals, I don't and nor does my mother.

One theatre was doing " 7 brides for 7 brothers" a friend offered to take my dad.

Me and my mum went to the smaller local theatre.

As we were in the car heading in to town (theatres are in walking distance) my mum graciously said she would buy the 7 brides tickets.

So for my birthday my present was my dad and friend getting theatre tickets.

I paid for me and mum's tickets.

If you have read my posts you will see my mum had form for bad presents.

Last year I received 2 used/read books from my SIL. Known for being a bit tight and often buying very odd gifts, but used books??? Not even books of interest to me. One was part of a series of books I haven’t read. Obviously they got given straight to the charity shop!!!!

Which is probably where they came from.
I've mentioned this before, but not on this thread. My uncle and his wife were quite well off, and used to send my husband and me some very odd Christmas presents. (Plastic trays for "nibbles", glass avocado dishes, stainless steel wine "glasses" Nothing we'd ever use.) I thought they just had weird ideas; until the year we got a tartan wash-bag. With a gift tag inside addressed to them from someone else, and we realised they must have been re-gifting for years. I wrote a nice thank-you note, and included the tag, saying "I think this is yours". That was the last present we ever got from them. I don't object to re-gifting, but A) Make sure it's something the recipient would like and B) take any previous gifting information off it first.

A size 28 blouse from MIL… I was a size 16 .

Cantstopthenoise · 11/10/2026 15:50

When my brother was little, he had a habit of chewing the ties on his trousers and my Auntie kept saying she would buy him dog chews. She bought some and wrote on the label “From Santa - these will stop you chewing!”

My ex-partner’s sister posted on her Facebook status one year about losing a turnip on the way home from work one Christmas - he went out and bought a turnip, wrapped it up and gave it to her on Christmas Day at his Mam’s!

Assuming the turnip wasn't her only present from him, that's just funny and the sort of thing I would do to my sister.

Mine is another work secret santa one. First job out of uni, I had been there three months, and the person buying for me had left a few months earlier but came to the department Christmas dinner because he was still friendly with people. While everyone else got candles, scarves, Christmas ornaments etc I opened a plasticine 'build a boyfriend' kit (from a bloke 10 years older than me that I'd never met) Sad

My dad was never great with gifts but the worst year involved two gifts - an Arctic Animals calendar and a Peter Kay book. I was about 14, and had never expressed a particular interest in arctic animals and really disliked Peter Kay… They must have been re-gifts.

I’m his only child, he left when I was a baby and he has always done ok financially so it was very disappointing that he never made an effort. He does try a bit harder with my children than he did with me, thankfully.

One year, my ex admitted he couldn't think of what to get me. On Christmas morning, I was presented with a £1.50 chamois leather that I'd bought for my car the day before as it was old and damp and kept misting up. He'd got it out of the car, wrapped it, and included the £1.50 so he'd reimbursed me.

🤨 I can see why he is an ex. He could have just got you a few little thing like posh chocolate and bubble bath and said that he didn't know but as soon as you saw something you like he would get it for you.

🤔 Who would want yellow lipstick? Why would they even make it? I wonder how many they've ever sold. I have so many questions I would like to ask the creator about their bizzare idea.

I have coeliac disease so you can guess the worst presents I somehow still receive after all these years lol.

I know so little about it so surely it would just make sense if people just not buy you food gifts unless you specify what is okay. There are plenty of other present genres people can try.

From 2 family members who are pretty comfortable financially, for Christmas - I received a huge box all packaged nicely with a bow, only to open it to find the box absolutely full of non perishables. I’m not talking about a nice Christmas food hamper. I mean a box of Asda smart price chopped tomatoes, bags of pasta, everyday rice (this is an insult in itself) a jar of mayonnaise etc. I am never an ungrateful gift recipient.. but this was an absolutely horrendous test of gratitude. Especially since I had carefully thought out my gifts that year. The year after was a love to shop voucher.. which whilst it still screams “there’s no effort to be given” it’s arguably better than the previous year !!

PaperMachePanda · 12/10/2026 00:32

My grandmother once got me a half eaten box of cherry flavoured chocolates. She gave everyone else good gifts. She was a mean old crone. I got my own back because I kept those chocolates for months and when it came around to her birthday I regifted.

Depending when this was there was a trend of colour changing lipstick, maybe it was one of those? They are still around.

OMG this reminded me. A few years ago my daughter's childminder gave her a Disney Aladdin's Lamp lip balm. She used it as an ornament on her bookshelf. I'm not even sure she realised it was a lip balm.

A few months ago she had a clear out and I thought "oh lip balm is always handy and this one has never been used" and put it on my desk in the study. One day I smeared some on (clear balm so wasn't being particularly careful) before a Teams call with my intern. For some reason and to my great fortune I couldn't get my camera to work. When I went to the bathroom after I was horrified to realise it was colour changing lip balm and I looked like a toddler with strawberry jam smeared all around my chops.

We used to write Christmas lists when young and when I was 17/18 I had asked for

  • an Aran jumper (cream fisherman type)
  • a pair of moccasin slippers (nan didn’t know what these were so I described them to her)
  • a pair of leather gloves to drive in as I had just passed my test.
Well, my family outdid themselves. Nan got a friend of hers to knit me an authentic Aran jumper - it was soooo heavy and would have only fit an alien it was so long and thin and with a super long neck. My nice elegant ladies leather gloves looked like this: and my tasteful moccasins were interpreted by nan as this: I put the whole ensemble on and my family were crying with laughter (nan included). It was a loooong time until my birthday that year!
