My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

My mother used to buy me presents that she wanted, give them to me, then take them back under a dramatic day-spoiling pretext.

Armchair psychologists welcome.

Oooh my MIL used to do that. She bought DH and his first wife a canteen of posh cutlery and a Wedgwood dinner set for their wedding gift. While they were still on honeymoon she collected both from their house and claimed she needed to "borrow" them for a dinner party she was giving. She was always very reluctant to give it back and DH would have to "collect" it back. When he and his first wife divorced he kept the sets but believe it or not the tug of war over this bloody stuff carried on until she died. It now sits triumphantly in our glass fronted dining room cabinet! I thought it was quite funny - it is very nice though.

The ridiculous thing is that MIL was wealthy and could easily have bought multiple dinner sets but seemed to resent other people having nice stuff bought with her money even though she had chosen to give it as a present.
