My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

We’ve had some corkers - a pack of 5 notecards as a shared gift to a family of four, you can imagine the scrabble to see who got the extra one! A bag of giant pasta from TKMaxx - we now know who buys said bags! A bag of Epsom salts for a sporty teen girl - she was thrilled (not) and maybe best of all a millennium countdown candle Christmas 2000 - which was meant to be started on the 1st dec to make any sense!

At work, we always used to do a 'Secret Santa' by choosing a name on a piece of paper at random. It started off fine for a couple of years, then became a bit jokey then it descended into nastiness - so it all stopped!

It all got a bit too personal!

We did secret santa too. I once received 2 cabbages and some carrots and parsnips - wrapped together look like male genitalia!

One year, as a young teen, my ‘main’ present from my parents was a clarinet reed cutter and a reed case. I was an amateur player and was certainly not obsessed with all things clarinet. Crestfallen is an understatement!

A friend got a clothing item from SIL for Christmasfrom M&S. Took it back to exchange for something she liked. "Madam, we have not sold this item for 8 years so I'm afraid you can't exchange it".

I knew someone whose mum sent them a jumper and when they tried to exchange it were told it had been sold several years earlier for £2.00.

A used candle in the shape of a swan from MIL.

Cantyouseethishorselovesme · 09/10/2026 07:09

My MIL gave me a pack of three Bronnley Lemon soaps. When I opened it, one was basically a sliver. I'm not a snob about regifts...but USED SOAP?

Velvian · 09/10/2026 07:13

My PIL went on holiday to the Caribbean before Xmas and got all the men rum (DH doesn't drink rum) and all the women very loud cloth bags. I always remember my SIL's reaction to opening it, she just said 'wowsers!' which summed it up.

That was a one off anomaly, they're usually very good. 😅

Ex-PILs once bought me pyrex dishes not long after I'd had a very difficult time with the birth of my eldest DC. That was very upsetting to me at the time.

UsernameHoarder · 09/10/2026 07:18

The more my mil loves you the weirder the gift. Well thats my take anyway.

The best worst thing was when she gave my 11 yo ds a diamanté pen. It was a normal bic biro covered in diamanté. She thought it would be great for school. Hmm

muddyford · 09/10/2026 07:28

One year for Christmas DSS and family bought me a set of tiny wind chimes, about the size of a paperback. That was it. Was definitely miffed as I had spent a lot of time buying them exactly what they had suggested, for them and the children. I loathe wind chimes too. So it was the context as well as a crap present.

Name changed for this as anyone who knows the story will know it’s me! My ex gave me a fucking salami last Xmas. As the main gift. I had never once expressed interest in salami. He at first tried to tell me I loved salami (I don’t) then tried to say various other reasons, none of which made any sense. I still don’t know if he just had so little regard for me, or if he was cheating on me and had mixed up who liked salami in his tiny brain. I had bought him a load of really nice and expensive gifts so was just like ‘wtf’. It was inexplicable and I realised at that point we were over. But stupidly didn’t dump him immediately so before I could break up with him, he ghosted me. So that was a very weird Xmas and start to the new year!

There was a woman on here a few years back whose husband got her a periscope. I often think about her and what she got in the following years 😂

Our next door neighbour was a keen gardener well into his nineties, his pride and joy was his amazing vegetable garden. When my mum came to stay (age 60s!) he would leave her "carefully arranged" onions and courgettes on the hedge between our gardens!

Has anyone mentioned the knicker elastic one yet (years ago someone reported they had received that as a gift from their mother/MIL)?!

My other grandmother is usually OK but I did get a shower set that said 'Dear Cheryl' on the tag. I still to this day do not know who Cheryl is.

My late grandmother in law used to call me Brenda, (not my name).

That’s two ‘dear Cheryl’ posts!!!
who is this Cheryl????
😂😂😂😂

My BIL once sent a fresh smoked food hamper. We don’t eat anything smoked, it stunk the house and fridge out and where did he think I was going to have room to store all this extra food at Xmas. I gave some away and chucked the rest.

MyOliveStork · 09/10/2026 07:49

Last year I received 2 used/read books from my SIL. Known for being a bit tight and often buying very odd gifts, but used books??? Not even books of interest to me. One was part of a series of books I haven’t read. Obviously they got given straight to the charity shop!!!!

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/10/2026 07:51

DH once bought me one of those candle warmer things. It went straight in the charity shop bin, and I mean straight in from the wrapping paper, as I don’t burn candles or use fragrance in the house.

A close relative lives in another European country and my DCs are gently learning the language. At this time they were about 6 and 8 and could just about say hello and their numbers and colours. This relative gave us two books in the language. One was a story book, very old fashioned but I could just about read it. The other was a book about a historical collection put out by a museum, and signed to this relative's own, much older and fluent, child.

My mum and I used to make it a Christmas Eve tradition to open the present from my grandparents as we knew it was going to be funny/useless. One year, as a teen, I opened 2 pairs of nylon, see through bright green and yellow underwear. Safe to say we looked very confused, laughed and put them straight in the bin. They gave my mum proper old looking granny slippers. She wasn’t amused 😂

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 09/10/2026 09:10

Ex MIL (who was really lovely) gave me a pack of playboy thongs. She thought that I would like the little diamanté rabbits!
I don’t wear thongs (although obviously that had never come up in conversation), I’m not a diamanté or playboy person!

Askandyforcompo · 09/10/2026 09:20

From my mother-
A set of champagne glasses engraved to the company she worked for- a corporate gift clearly!
A sponge bag. I took it back to MandS and it was 10 years old.
A single pair of knickers from Next. My brothers girlfriend age 15 got the same knickers plus matching camisole, nightie, dressing gown in a huge box layered with tissue paper. The biggest fuck you ever and still hurts 40 years later.

There are thoughtless gifts and then there are ungrateful recipients! Food hampers are very common gifts at Christmas and unless he knew you had an aversion to smoked food this sounds like a nice gift, not odd at all.

As a work secret Santa gift. I received a bottle of vodka. I’m not a big drinker, don’t really like vodka and I was 6 months pregnant at the time…..

To be fair the following summer I did have some vodka cocktails and enjoyed them!
