My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

A boyfriend in my teens gave me a Paddington Bear pillowcase. Just that.

Mangelwurzelfortea · 09/10/2026 15:32

My great-aunt Bobby used to buy a two-pack of flesh-coloured tights and split them between me and my sister every Christmas.

My mum is a shocker for re gifting presents. One Christmas I bought her a lovely expensive perfume that I thought she would like. The next birthday she gave it back to me.

She also loves a charity shop... I told her I liked a particular style of coat so she bought me 4 or 5 of them in different colour. I didn't like the coat that much!!

I gave it a few months and donated them back to a different charity shop that I didn't think she used.

One of the coats ended up back in a bag of bits she dropped over.

My husband tells me ill be buried in that bloody coat.

When I was 9 my Auntie Irene bought me a nightie with the words "works best when horizontal" on it. It took me several years before I understood what it meant.

Crikey!

My SIL has similar taste to me in books, we always buy each other a book for Christmas though she openly admits to reading the book she's bought me before wrapping it. Once when she visited she spotted a book she hadn't read and I said she could take it. It was a charity shop book and I had read it.

Some 18 months later I opened my Christmas present and it was the book I had lent her, recognisable by the Barnados sticker and general tattiness.

One of those emergency devices that you use to break the window in the car in the event of entering water. Also, one of those devices you use if someone is choking.

At least they were useful!

Got 4 plain white coffee cups, like the ones you’d get in an office canteen, as a joint birthday gift from my three friends. Typically we got each other nice jewelry, gold earrings etc and we usually budgeted 100-150. I was quite stumped by that one. Handed to me still in the brown cardboard delivery box and the receipt (€20) was still inside. Felt intentional.

Lorrymum · 09/10/2026 15:41

MIL gave me a pack of clothes pegs and peg bag. No idea why she thought they were an appropriate pressie!

itstoughatthetop · 09/10/2026 15:43

An ex best friend, that had angered and upset me so much but feelings I had to keep to myself, I bought her kid a toothbrush that could be decorated and a crappy pig money box for her. I’ve since walked away. What you receive from others is usually a message to how they feel about you. Unless that person is known to have never had taste or is completely tight.

Mil buys me candles. Nice one's to be fair but I hate candles... In her defense it's probably because the first time she give me one i told her I loved it so it's become a tradition that I don't have the heart to stop

All from MIL

-She used to run a business and gave DH a duffle bag all branded from her company- which she got for free
-Got DH a nylon, black balaclava. We live in coastal SE and DH can't wear anything synthetic, otherwise he sweats. DH often wear shorts for 10mths of the year so I have no idea why she thought he'd need a balaclava?
-One year she bought me a cooking apron which said something like 'The more I eat, the tighter my clothes get!'
-A nylon onesie from primark which was 3 sizes too small
-Matching scarf, beanie and gloves which she'd bought from a craft fayre thing. Very chunky, amateur work and all in HER favourite colour- purple. I do not own 1 purple item.

This cracked me up, a theme of synthetic fabrics running through some of them! The balaclava just made me think of kinky sex games which l doubt is the vibe she was going for....

A Primark bathmat. I was hosting Christmas that year, and had put the gift giver up for 5 days including all food and drink, panto tickets, light trail tickets etc. Not so much as a bunch of flowers or a bottle of wine for having them, and on the day itself, a Primark bath mat. With the £3 price still on it. Oh, and our house doesn’t have a bath.

itstoughatthetop · 09/10/2026 15:46

The worst present I’ve EVER received was a Gerri Halliwell CD from my DM. Like WTAF! Who buys that crap?

Londonmummy66 · 09/10/2026 15:46

DH bought me a fleece blanket printed with a photo of my DC blown up to enormous size. I'm afraid it went in the bin....

That’s sooo bad. Hope you never hosted them again.

I helped a friend of mine out and as thank you she got me a free trial pass to join her at the gym her work pays for. I mentioned how soft the towels were in 'spa' area. For Christmas she wrapped a rolled up towel she stole from the gym.

I miss the 'laugh' emoji.

TheBrunswick · 09/10/2026 15:50

Mil gave me a size 8 half slip. I was 8 months pregnant.
One year dh got carried away buying me kitchen items, he was told firmly that unless I asked for a specific household item they were not suitable gifts. He listened as the following Christmas i received diamond earrings.

Tooldforthisshit · 09/10/2026 15:50

My husband bought me a snot coloured heat up hoodie.

Every winter he asks me where it is😂

disappointingpresents · 09/10/2026 15:50

I have name changed for this post as everyone I have told will recognise me.

Late mum was the QUEEN of buying awful presents.
Pink jumper for an 12 year old I was 24.
Asked for an ornament of a particular dog (cavalier) she bought an Alsatian.
Empty box.
I collected a dinner set (royal doulton) she bought Eternal beau from Argos.
Gaudy necklace with stones missing.
Sports bag for DH which was so tiny not even shin pads could fit.
Used makeup.
Padded coat hangers for my 21st birthday.
Another empty box because I seemed to have lost the other one.

I could go on and on but don't want to bore you all.

Sad part was that the year after she died I missed getting a shit present😢.

I’d love to say no, but I was a mug in my younger days. 😁 The following year was a toiletries kit - the kind you get free when you make a big purchase of fancy products.

WearyAuldWumman · 09/10/2026 15:50

Easter, rather than Christmas.

My uni boyfriend: "Mum said to be romantic and buy you an Easter egg, but you're supposed to be on a diet - so here's a box of chocolates that someone brought as a present to the house."

Dollymylove · 09/10/2026 15:54

I had a great uncle who was notoriously tight. He used to make his own wine ( it was foul) he used to hide the good stuff when we used to visit on new years day. I took a bottle of cheap red wine which I got back for Xmas the next year. I took it again the year after and it bounced back every xmas/new year for years. In the end , when it was my turn again I opened it up poored it down the sink 😀
On a slightly different note my hubby's company were running a secret Santa. He entered and when it came to collect them, there wasnt one for him. He was a bit pissed off but never mind. He thought it had probably slipped his Santa's mind. So he entered again the year after. He came home with a face like a smacked arse. No present for him AGAIN!!
I feel a little ashamed that I laughed about it for the whole evening. Every time I looked at him I started laughing again.
Safe to say he refused to enter the secret Santa ever again. 🤣🤣

My miserly relative gave me a used road map of Birmingham. I lived 200 miles from B’ham and was several years away from being able to drive

SybillaB · 09/10/2026 16:00

My MIL bought me a washing up bowl for one Xmas, followed by a catering pack of cling film the next year. As she rightly said it did last for ages.
