My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

My son (5 years old at the time) was once given a roll of Sellotape by an adult friend of ours.

Friend then told us he'd got it for free!

One year that was all my DD wanted for Christmas - a roll of stick tape.

My MIL gave my husband (her son) a box of OXO cubes…?!? 😂🤷‍♀️

Swissmeringue · 09/10/2026 14:44

I didn't change my name when I married DH. His mum is deeply offended by this and every birthday and Christmas sends me a cheque addressed to Mrs swiss dh's surname for £10. 😂😂😂

For context, last Christmas we got them a lovely framed photo print for their wall of the particular area in the lake District that they went on their honeymoon, it cost us £150. They got DH a jumper three sizes too small and, I shit you not, a discount code for medexpress in case he fancied some Mounjaro. 💀

My birthday is in November. When I was about ten my parents bought me a bike - great! My grandma bought me the front bike light. I got the back one for Christmas 🤣

AnonyMumAuDHD · 09/10/2026 14:46

My FiL bought MiL one of those pull along shopping trollies. She barely suppressed the outrage. I am now the age she was when he bought it - late fifties - and I marvel at her restraint frankly. It wasn’t even a Pucci inspired design that was in vogue at the time… just a nasty, faux leather, tan coloured one. Bless him… he thought it would make her life easier 🤣

GiBlues · 09/10/2026 14:49

my friend got me a small bag of maltesers and a mini photo book of her wedding for my birthday once.

Greenwriter76 · 09/10/2026 14:51

My birthday is very close to Christmas (before). One year I met up with a friend a few weeks after, and her bday gift to me was an out of date box of mince pies!

Smittenkitchen · 09/10/2026 14:52

My sweet 27 yo student with SEN tried to give me a manky old citronella anti-mosquito candle with a layer of fluff on top that was lying around at her house. I politely declined but really appreciated the thought.

My ex's parents once gave me a mock-Zippo cigarette lighter with Budweiser branding on it, in a presentation tin. I don't drink Budweiser. Neither have I ever smoked. They knew that.

The same year, his sister gave us a 'joint' gift of three jars of pate in a sort of presentation set. I was vegetarian at the time. They knew that.

The ex himself gave me nothing at all.

A crotchet dish cloth. I still laugh about it now

Could it have been a hot pan holder?

LongGinShortTonic · 09/10/2026 15:03

My mother gave me a fake brick one year, to put on my head to stop me growing.

ClaudettedeBeauvoir · 09/10/2026 15:03

My pil have bought my husband some bizarre gifts over the years:

  • A DVD of Robbie Coltrane exploring the B Roads of Britain
  • An aphrodisiac cookbook
  • A cable tidy (as his only present)

Luckily they rarely get me anything. Although they did once buy me a small box of Thornton's chocolate which was presented to me with the phrase "We didn't pay full price"!

FamilyPhoto · 09/10/2026 15:11

Ive got 2
SMIL had issues with the amount of food I ate whilst pregnant with DC1 ( if it wasnt nailed down it was fair game) and coincidentally got me a size 24 pink jumper for Xmas that year. I was a size 10 , 2 months Post partum ( not a boast, baby was massive and after a traumatic birth the weight dropped off me).
2nd one was a work Secret Santa wher the person buying for me didnt bring anything in then was hounded by the organiser until he finally brought me in a bottle of Tesco own brand bubble bath and slammed it in my desk the first week in February.

A diving knife. I don't dive.

Friends offloading unwanted wedding presents are definitely a thing. One of mine gave me a set of cutlery, the cheapest nastiest thin, wonky mass-produced cutlery you ever saw, clearly left over from her wedding.

Logically, if she didn't want it, why would I?

Toygrrrl · 09/10/2026 15:15

When I was 9 my Auntie Irene bought me a nightie with the words "works best when horizontal" on it. It took me several years before I understood what it meant.

AnotherNewNotebook · 09/10/2026 15:16

I had a hardback book about a building I didn't know or have any connection with. It had an inscription inside from the author, addressed to the person giving me the gift by name, and dated a decade before.

The same person gifted me a three pack of tights the following year, with one of the pairs missing.

Many years ago an elderly friend was hosting a foreign language student over Christmas. He was so excited about having a UK Christmas and giving her the gift he had bought her.

On Christmas morning she came downstairs to find him sitting at the table which he had laid ready for the breakfast he had prepared for her with a massive parcel, beautifully wrapped, in her place. She had to open it there and then.

He watched with a beaming smile as she unwrapped .......... a bumper pack of Dr Whites Maternity Pads!

He had no idea what they were or any understanding of female needs but they were clearly with other things for ladies so he guessed that they were suitable.

Laughed out loud at that! Reminds me of when living in Singapore, the girl who helped with the housework gave me a vaginal deodorant, obviously not knowing what it was for( or perhaps she was trying to tell me something!)

dottiedodah · 09/10/2026 15:19

Terribly excited and just moved into our new home .Had a beautifully wrapped heavy an exciting looking present. Something for the home maybe? No turned out to be several tins of soup! Didnt know whether to laugh or cry. Still lots of lunch ideas for January.

My other grandmother is usually OK but I did get a shower set that said 'Dear Cheryl' on the tag. I still to this day do not know who Cheryl is.

My late grandmother in law used to call me Brenda, (not my name).

Maybe it’s a brand name if two posters got the same tag?

At work, we always used to do a 'Secret Santa' by choosing a name on a piece of paper at random. It started off fine for a couple of years, then became a bit jokey then it descended into nastiness - so it all stopped!

It all got a bit too personal!

We did inappropriate secret santa one year, expecting that people would buy slogan mugs and cheeky willy chocolates.

No - there was a 10 inch black dildo with a sucker on the end, a dildo on a blow up cushion, a calendar of unusual shaped cocks and a giant vibrating willy warmer cushion.

We had to tell everyone the joke had gone too far and we couldn't do it again.

My ex MIL got me a blue toilet seat one Christmas. All nicely wrapped up with my name on it.

I remember a Christmas toilet seat being the catalyst to me ending a relationship. Obviously there were bigger problems but I remember his dad buying his mum a toilet seat for Christmas and not one of the family thinking there was anything wrong with that and that it was a perfectly nice gift. Just a normal, standard toilet seat. I remember thinking if I stayed, it would only be a matter of time before I’d be expected to be grateful that I’d been treated to a new potato masher for my birthday and that was that, I was done.

I got a bag of cheap supermarket coffee from a woman as a thank you for minding her kid for 2 days while herself and her husband had a break away at a hotel in the countryside. I was a bit confused when she tossed it on the table and said “this is for you”. I thought it was a joke of some kind and said, puzzled “I don’t get it?”, to which she snarled “it’s a gift” and then got the hump… presumably at my lack of gratitude for her gift. After some awkwardness, she hissed at me “well, are we having wine”. This while sitting in my house! She hadn’t brought wine. My husband and I have an in-joke now about cheap coffee…
