My ex and I parted on good terms. Our first Christmas seperated we stuck to our annual tradition and took DD for a pre-Christmas meal out and decided to exchange a gift. He got me....bath bombs. Due to arthritis I haven't used a bath since childhood. We were allocated a bungalow because of the walk-in shower. I wasn't upset just totally baffled. We still celebrate DD's birthday together and she's an adult now. I'm remarried but DH knows we still get on okay. I'm still baffled by the bath bombs.

MIL bought huge, canvas pictures,1.5m x 1m using blown up photos. SIL's pic was a staged, lovely portrait of her and BIL. DH and I got a random, side on pic MIL had taken when we were squinting into the sun with our faces all wrinkled up!

When my DC were something like 7,5 and 3 my BIL (their Uncle) asked what they wanted. I offered a couple of suggestions so he'd be a hit as he was a bit awkward as a person and always spent Boxing Day with us.

He ignored the list-which obviously was his right-and gave them a card which said that he had bought them a goat in Africa.

A lovely thing to do but slightly missed the mark in this case 😂

Has anyone mentioned the knicker elastic one yet (years ago someone reported they had received that as a gift from their mother/MIL)?!

That was WigWamBam! One of my favourite MN threads of all time. Her MIL was nuttier than squirrel shit.

My weird nan gave my 3yr old brother a real dart board. The type you'd get in a pub with proper sharp darts! 😕

Oneearringlost · 09/10/2026 11:03

Not a Christmas present, but a 'gift' nonetheless. My MIL sent me a single sanitary pad 'freebie' that had been put through her letterbox. She actually used a stamp to sent it to me, saying "I have no use for this anymore".

His girlfriend probably chose it for you.

A battery operated toy gorilla that played the song "Macarena". Not sure what my mother was thinking there...!

One of those emergency devices that you use to break the window in the car in the event of entering water. Also, one of those devices you use if someone is choking.

From my mother-
A set of champagne glasses engraved to the company she worked for- a corporate gift clearly!
A sponge bag. I took it back to MandS and it was 10 years old.
A single pair of knickers from Next. My brothers girlfriend age 15 got the same knickers plus matching camisole, nightie, dressing gown in a huge box layered with tissue paper. The biggest fuck you ever and still hurts 40 years later.

your brother’s then girlfriend could also post on this thread - getting an underwear set from your boyfriend’s mum at 15 🤯😳
It must have been hurtful for you obviously OP, sorry you went through that.

My friend's nan gave her a ceramic swan for holding cotton balls . The balls came out it's arse for using .

JudyTeeny · 09/10/2026 12:36

My SIL is notoriously mean. She once gave DH (her brother) a box of 4 miniature aftershaves of some unknown brand for his birthday. I think it was Home Bargains or Poundland. Nothing wrong with that, but DH has never worn aftershave. Any perfume smells set off his asthma. We gave the unwanted gift to school when they were asking for donations for the Christmas fayre. On DH's next birthday in January, he unwrapped the same box of aftershaves from his sister. She either won it on the tombola or bought it from the White Elephant stall
We knew it was the exact same box due to a tear and pen mark on the back.

That's actually hilarious and I would have loved it, not least because when my son was little he thought the song chorus was "Heeeyyy My Gorilla".
I agree though, a bit random!

A SHE-WEE. He got me a she-wee. I will leave it there

OrangePippa · 09/10/2026 12:40

My MIL once gave me a washbag that I had given her for Christmas the previous year. She'd obviously forgotten.

PineappleAndGrapefruitLilt · 09/10/2026 12:50

A bottle of non alcoholic wine from MIL that was two years out of date

A friend got a clothing item from SIL for Christmasfrom M&S. Took it back to exchange for something she liked. "Madam, we have not sold this item for 8 years so I'm afraid you can't exchange it".

Happened to members of my family more than once🤣

My grandma was well known for her skinflint gifts. We found it funny and thanked her politely. One year she bought all her granddaughters a necklace each from the church jumble sale. Mine looked like a lump of rock on a chain. Another year she bought one of those Yves Rocher cosmetic selections that used to be advertised in women's magazines where you could get ten items for £5. And give us one each i.e. 50p worth. I was the executor of her will when she died and was astonished to find she had more than a million pounds in her estate.

My own mum is generally better with gifts but there have been a couple of bizarre blips. One year she gave me a stage prop cat. It really did look like a cat curled up asleep but under the fur it was rock hard so definitely not a cuddly toy. (I'm not mad about cats, don't mind them but dont have one.) When I tentatively queried the unusual choice she announced that she'd bought it for a friend's birthday but friend had given it back saying it gave her the creeps. Gee thanks, mum!

I think I still have it. My kids were fascinated by it when they were little and used to position it around the house and to trick visitors about our "new cat". One day we were having some building work done and I asked builder if he could have a go at opening our roll top desk which had jammed shut. He came into the kitchen looking ashenfaced and said "I don't know how to tell you this love but I've found your cat dead inside the desk".

A friend’s mum once gave me a neon pink feather boa as a birthday present. I’ve never shown any liking of that colour or even feather boas so I was baffled by it. I could only conclude she was re-gifting it to me.

I was also once given a minion stuffed toy as a Christmas present from a family friend - again, literally no idea why! I don’t think I’ve ever even watched a minion movie.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 09/10/2026 13:04

A book on overcoming eating disorders when I was at my thinnest (stressful period in life but I didn’t have an eating disorder and was naturally very thin to start with).

katseyes7 · 09/10/2026 13:09

My friend's older brother is 'a bit odd'.
Especially with presents.
One year he gave her a video of Princess Diana's funeral, with the charity shop price label still on it (she didn't have a video player/recorder, this was long after dvds were a thing). Her husband got a can of lager.
Neither of her young sons were given anything, but the dog got toys and a stocking full of treats.
He was at her house all over Christmas and according to her, ate them out of house and home.
He's not hard up. Just tight and weird.

katseyes7 · 09/10/2026 13:12

My (now ex) husband and l gave very decent, considered, Christmas presents to his brother and his wife, and their daughter, plus treats for their dogs.
One year we got an 'Animal Rescue' (or something similar, l forget the name) annual in return.

We were both in our thirties with no children.
I don't know if it was intended for us or they'd put the wrong label on it.

I would have been happy with that but I can understand it would not be to everyones taste.

I got a pink Penguin onesie once for Christmas. I love penguins, but really.....?

JengaCupboard · 09/10/2026 13:21

Two door-stops. DH God love him does listen very well, and will often present gifts at Christmas and Birthdays that I could have fleetingly mentioned in passing, months prior (and promptly forgot about). We had new internal doors in February 2024. Come Christmas two door stops. Individually wrapped, of course.

Jaxhog · 09/10/2026 13:22

Many years ago I bought DH an atlas of the Universe for Christmas, so guess what I got the next year? The Readers Digest DIY manual.
