What is it with MIL's? Can they simply not accept the fact that we've married/have relationships with their sons?

lovecattlearelowing · 26/12/2007 17:04

DH and I didn't get presents from the ILs as the moment I produced DD they announced that in future they would be buying just for 'the children'(however we're still expected to get them something ).

Gloriously, because MIL has taken a stand this year and told FIL he has to buy presents for his side of the family (both widowers/widowed with children from both marriages), DD actually got something she wanted that wasn't a cheapo knock-off from the markets of Aberdeen - the Peppa Pig train!

However, bless MIL's mad heart, she likes the GCs to have at least 3 things to open on Christmas morning and couldn't resist buying more, so DD also got a luminous pink synthetic knock-off Disney Princess dressing gown that's about 3 sizes too big and looks highly flammable - of course, she loves it [waaah smiley] - and a large tin of Celebrations (she's 2.10)!

Mincepiedermama · 26/12/2007 17:18

A small key ring.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 26/12/2007 17:45

A David Gray CD along with separate Christmas cards from the outlaws (she gives him a nicely firm paper card whereas I get a cheap paper offering). Even my parents who are next to useless when it comes to all things festive give us a joint Christmas card!.

morningpaper · 26/12/2007 17:58

She gave me my present in August and since then I have been trying to locate the smell of mould from my wardrobe - on Christmas Eve I picked up her present and it was dripping wet with slime - spring bulbs, nicely fermented and rotting all over my wardrobe floor!

cheshirekitty · 26/12/2007 18:00

We all got £100 each so I bought myself a Radley purse, perfume and a pair of shoes.

Have had MIL over since Sunday. What really bothered me is that DH would not pick her up so I had to drive 2 hours in the fog. I HATE FOG. Taking her back tomorrow, YIPEE!!!

If I have to watch another Morecambe and Wise show or Des O'Connor show I will surely kill myself.

crimplene · 26/12/2007 18:07

Nothing. We've always kept our address secret from her

Posey · 26/12/2007 18:16

I had a beautiful leather jewellry box and a top. Very nice

SelfishMrsClaus · 26/12/2007 18:23

£30 gift voucher for boots & D&G light blue perfume & body cream I love it

She got DH a £30 gift voucher for the sports shop & D&G blue aftershave

chocolateteapot · 26/12/2007 18:33

She's never bought me anything but since she bought DH a pack of pants for his 30th that is probably a blessing.

Actually I feel bad saying that, she's in a coma and I am a cow.

suwoo · 26/12/2007 18:44

Me and DH got £50 each in an envelope, which she knows is better for me as DH would absorb it into household costs, this way I actually get to spend it on myself! The only downside is she still spells my name wrong after 8 years

Theghostofchristmaspyjamas · 26/12/2007 18:52

an oil burner

cheapslutonjunk · 26/12/2007 18:56

Money for clothes in sale

And this book.

I think it looks really interesting - like a forerunner of MN.

Minum · 26/12/2007 19:11

My MIL bought me two lovely stools from Habitat, but far far better was this........

We went out for dinner as a massive family group on Christmas Eve, I wore beautiful, but agony shoes. Planned to go out to the pub after dinner with DH, but couldnt as I was in too much foot pain, so she swapped shoes with me, I got her comfy shoes and night out in pub, she walked home in the shoes from hell, with DC, and put them to bed - do MILs get better than that?

TheMNPeacekeepingForce · 26/12/2007 19:25

Suwoo - you are v lucky - we got £50 vouchers between the three of us (dh ds and me) but in previous years bless her she's given me £11!!
I know I should be grateful and I am but she isn't short of money so it makes me laugh a little. Makes me think of my sweet old auntie who used to send us a £1 coin (or was it a note back then) when we were kids!

suedonim · 26/12/2007 19:52

Nothing, not even a card, which is rather worrying as she always sends for Xmas/birthdays, even though she's 87yo. I'm about to call and find out if everything is ok....

morningglory · 26/12/2007 20:01

A French cartoon book for kids. I'm 35 and don't speak French that well. I think this was an insult?

JingleJulezbooBells · 26/12/2007 20:07

Money

TheMNPeacekeepingForce · 26/12/2007 20:23

Oh dear reading through this my MIL's aforementioned vouchers at £16.67 per person seem to be at the stingier end here....lol!

If she were very poor I'd think nothing of it but she's not....

eandh · 26/12/2007 20:25

£30 gift voucher and the offer to have the dd's overnight late january so dh and I can go out

Paddlechick666 · 26/12/2007 20:31

a lavender bag for your knicker drawer!

i'm serious! i hate lavender too!

can't figure out if she's done it on purpose as surely would've been easier to have not sent anything at all!

i do find it a bit amusing tho, along with the "special granddaughter" cards she sends dd altho she hasn't bothered to see her for over a year........

whispywhisp · 26/12/2007 20:38

paddlechick - you can have my lavender talc and soaps my dh bought for me! Yep, talc and soaps by Bronnley and Yardley....I'll be getting a zimmer for my birthday.

MissusHoHoHo · 26/12/2007 20:58
