Gifts for people you hate

I have to buy a gift for my odious mother. For many complex reasons I can’t not but I want to put as little thought and effort in as possible.

What have you bought for people you hate? I need ideas!

Personally I would gift her a charitable donation in her name to a charity she would never donate to buy something I would

That way I would be doing something positive

DottyHarmer · 02/12/2021 11:46

Dsis gave dm - newly widowed - one of those teapots for one with an incorporated cup. Dm was very upset.

@Poppins17

I love a Baylis and Harding gift set!!! Wondering what they says about me Grin
Me too
Hollywolly1 · 02/12/2021 12:22

Buy a lovely frame and put a photo of yourself in it,make sure its good and big and offer to hang it for her Xmas Grin, preferably in her front hall so she will see you every time she comes home

Bear2014 · 02/12/2021 12:31

Definitely a charity gift - a warm coat for a refugee child on Choose Love, or a goat from Oxfam or similar.

Bluetrews25 · 02/12/2021 13:25

Ah, spot the obvious mistake, LadyCampanula - you gave her something she could show off about, all year round. She will have loved that.
Something similar but less showy-offy would be a Hotel Chocolat subscription if you can access something like that where you are. Box of chocs every month delivered. Coffee delivered monthly?
The other angle is to support a local independent trader rather than a large corporation, then at least the little man benefits from your forced expenditure.

@LadyCampanulaTottington

I don’t live in the UK nor does she but also I don’t live in my home country where she is Grin

I was thinking of a gift basket full of food from my adopted home country. She’s having Christmas with my sister and BIL so at least they’ll get some nice food too.

That's a good idea.

If you don't go down the charity gift route, then a truly disappointing gift needs to be almost something she would really love, but not quite. Like when you were a kid and really wanted a Walkman, but you got a cheap radio from the market with a single hearing-aid style earpiece.(I might be projecting a bit there!). So if she loves fresh flowers, perhaps artificial ones? Or if she thinks she's a whizz at flower-arranging, then perhaps a beginners class?

My older sister hates me and has tried her best to give me mountains of gifts which will humiliate me- dresses she claims were too small for her (despite them being obviously about 2 feet too long for her and not mearly wide enough), things she knows I am allergic to, sex toys and so on. Apart from the sex toys (immediate bin!) I sold the lot and discovered I have a real talent for online sales. This lead to a job which has allowed me to work from home for years. Cheers, Sis!

What is wrong with a bayliss and harding gift set ?

leatherboundbooks · 02/12/2021 15:34

when I was in the middle of the nasty divorce, I was still sending now ex a little present so he couldn't say how mean I was not getting him one. The woman he ran off with had a dog and he ended up walking it so got him some lovely dog poo bags with bones printed on them and a bone-shaped thingy to put them and hang from the lead. He had always said he wanted to learn to play the bagpipes but very expensive to get a set and have them cluttering up the place for years, but I softened the next year and got him a small cheap set, hope that she liked them. Does mother have a partner who would love to play the bagpipes?

leatherboundbooks · 02/12/2021 15:35

for ease of doing something nice and easy a hamper. Lots of lovely hampers around, some are cheap too, exciting to get a delivery of a hamper

TheCreamCaker · 02/12/2021 15:41

I would never buy something for a person I hate

fabulousathome · 02/12/2021 15:42

Sponsor a toilet.

TheCreamCaker · 02/12/2021 15:43

DottyHarmer Someone once bought me one of those teapot/cup things, for a birthday. I gave it to a charity shop.

fabulousathome · 02/12/2021 15:43

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/12/2021 15:46

I get exh a Terrys chocolate orange every single time! I hate him.

It’s nto an inherently bad present if you like them (which he does) but it’s the obvious lack of thought and cheapness that makes it a good choice. It makes the kids think we’re giving him something without my having to put any thought in!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 02/12/2021 15:47

I think you should get the jigsaw, discretely open the box and take a piece out. or buy two and mix up the pieces.
The gift that keeps on giving...

BobbieT1999 · 02/12/2021 15:51

Me too! I don't understand all the hate for it!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/12/2021 15:52

itchy hat made me laugh Grin

BearFacedCheekGrylls · 02/12/2021 16:01

Just buy her something she would like but fart on it.

JuergenWasRobbed · 02/12/2021 16:02

Fortnums hamper? Just by starting the thread you are using up your energy Sad

stayignorant · 02/12/2021 16:09

I love this thread. If I ever need cheering up I'll come back here 🤣

I would say just get her a crappy gift set like Nivea or Dove or the charity donation thing is a great idea. Or you could sponsor a leopard for her?

SamhainToImbolc · 02/12/2021 16:11

Send A Goat? That way you're giving to charity instead on the person you don't like. My MIL and SIL are the passive aggressive experts on the giving (or not giving) of presents Xmas Hmm.

ecoactive1 · 02/12/2021 16:53

sack of coal

ecoactive1 · 02/12/2021 16:55

@stayignorant My Mum received a dove gift set from MIL for her birthday despite me saying she doesn't like Dove products. She gave it to the scouts jumble sale instead. Some people absolutely thoughtless aren't they"!
