Gifts for people you hate

I have to buy a gift for my odious mother. For many complex reasons I can’t not but I want to put as little thought and effort in as possible.

What have you bought for people you hate? I need ideas!

Pop into a charity shop next time you are passing. They always have unwanted , unopened gift sets of smellies someone got and hated. Usually £1.50ish. Or maybe a silk scarf from a charity shop. They often have perfectly pleasant ones for £1.00. She will think you have taken so much trouble. You will know better.

TheHouseElf · 01/12/2021 23:03

@bringbacksummernow

Something that you can pick up when you do the weekly food shop so requires no extra effort or thought at all
I get this a lot from MIL - usually plants or sets of 4 mugs.
Youngatheart00 · 01/12/2021 23:04

Be classy and do a semi-generous charity gift in her name.

No pleasure for her, satisfaction for you

caketiger · 01/12/2021 23:04

Strong scented draw liner paper...

SlapBet · 01/12/2021 23:05

Has anyone directed you to the Facebook tat threads yet? Grin

MamaWeasel · 01/12/2021 23:05

I like talcum powder....and I've bought best friend a goat for Christmas Shock

MamaWeasel · 01/12/2021 23:06

Ooooooh is there a link to the fb tat threads? Pretty please?

TheHouseElf · 01/12/2021 23:07

The best one I ever bought was for my then boyfriend's twin brother's girlfriend, which was a book called "How to be a complete bitch". Not my finest moment, but she absolutely was Grin

Just to confuse you - several of these ideas are actually on our family Christmas list. DC like a couple of Baylis and Hardy scents (Oud and cedar or something) and DF-i-L loves jigsaws. DH weirdly loves Lush products and my auntie loves a calendar.

I'd get a potted cyclamen or similar. Not because they are horrible - I love them and would be delighted to get one, and have given them to people I like/love. But they require no effort, look nice and you can pick one up anywhere for not much money. The trick with people you dislike is to not have to put much thought or effort into the present. It doesn't have to be horrible in itself.

Pickles89 · 01/12/2021 23:08

Not a goat, that's just harsh for the goat which will be undernourished, have it's babies take from it and eventually be slaughtered. Better to give a toilet, reusable period protection or birth control. I agree with those who've said it's better to give a charity gift and turn your negative emotions into something positive than think of something deliberately spiteful, which at the end of the day will affect how you feel about yourself, even if only subconsciously.

Blaaaaaaaaah · 01/12/2021 23:10

@LadyCampanulaTottington
Just out of interest why do you have to get her something?
I’ve been Xmas shopping today and I’m torn. I don’t want to get or receive anything from her but I’m not sure if I should??

Enough4me · 01/12/2021 23:16

@Muchtoomuchtodo I don't mind Yankee candle tealights and love Turkish delight (ideally the large fresh powdered type), can I pair up with you and be annoying? Wink

I quite like the tealights because of their size. Yankee candles stink a lot but when they're tiny it's about the right amount of scent, I think. But I have lots of pets, including chickens running around my yard shitting everywhere, so my house probably requires a stronger than average "mood scent" to get that homely ambience...

Dillidalli · 01/12/2021 23:20

Aw my mum has given me a Baylis and Harding set for several christmasses, I don’t think she hates me, I think she thinks they are vair posh Blush

TeeBee · 01/12/2021 23:21

Cellulite massager

Pigeoninthehouse · 01/12/2021 23:31

Soap gift set, bayliss and harding.
Earrings, if she doesn't have pierced ears (former friend)
Car cleaning kit, if she doesn't have a car. A step ladder, ironing board, car mats, wheel trims.
Horrible garden gnome.
Although, I wouldn't bother just buy a box of chocs and be done, the emotional energy isn't worth it.

BeefSupreme · 01/12/2021 23:33

@SimpsonsXmasBoogie

I've seen a few suggestions on here of things I have actually bought for people in the past... Oops Blush
Same Grin
Enough4me · 01/12/2021 23:34

@SimpsonsXmasBoogie I could link you up with my friend who is obsessed with Scensi wax melts and will give them to me for Christmas I have no choice, but not sure you'd forgive me. They are all stink hype in their thick plastic cubes Grin

The chicken shit probably smells better and at least it's natural.

BlueGreenGlaring · 01/12/2021 23:35

I quite like Baylis’s and Harding soap 😊, it’s as good as any other, so I wouldn’t care

BlueGreenGlaring · 01/12/2021 23:36

It’s funny, that lots of you hate them and think them common, but you all know their name 🤣🤣🤣

Fl0w3ry · 01/12/2021 23:38

My MIL once bought me just a £1 umberella for Christmas with the price tag still on it!

Zebracat · 01/12/2021 23:40

I just came up with a corker, then thought how awful it would be if I got it from my daughter for Christmas! So I’m not saying, just in case it’s you..
To be fair, most of the suggestions on here are the sort of crap I say oh that’s lovely darling! to every year.

NamechangeApril21 · 01/12/2021 23:44

You can buy jigsaws that don't actually fit together properly so you can never complete them

Smokeahontas · 01/12/2021 23:46

Box of Dulcolax and some naice shea butter / aloe vera loo roll.

SpindlesWinterWhorl · 01/12/2021 23:49

@mnahmnah

Chocolates. Bath bombs. Baylis & Harding gift sets. Slipper socks. Jigsaw. All the boring but easy things.
Isn't it weird that those things are often suggested on here as serious contenders for 'lovely gifts'?! Along with the ever-seasonal 'lovely scarf'. And a voucher for afternoon tea in some out of the way shithole with one thimbleful of lambrini masqerading as prosecco-laden luxury 'pamering'. Fuck me.

So yeah, OP, any that ^^
