Gifts for people you hate

LadyCampanulaTottington · 01/12/2021 21:42

I have to buy a gift for my odious mother. For many complex reasons I can’t not but I want to put as little thought and effort in as possible.

What have you bought for people you hate? I need ideas!

OP posts:
HolidayTime2021 · 01/12/2021 23:52

Wrist warmers
Fingerless gloves
Cashmere bed socks
incontinence pads

WouldBeGood · 01/12/2021 23:57

My dad’s horrible and a massive racist so some of these charity ones sound ideal 🤣

amsadandconfused · 01/12/2021 23:58

TBH if you really don’t care just don’t bother . I really cannot understand why people are encouraging you to buy such awful presents 🙄

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 02/12/2021 00:01

The chicken shit probably smells better and at least it's natural.

Bayliss and harding gift sets were what my ex husband bought me every year!! After being married 15 years and him knowing I have sensitive skin, plus me spending oodles of cash on him....

Enough4me · 02/12/2021 00:02

@HolidayTime2021, please hate me a I'd like your gifts but not the incontinence pads thanks.

creaturcomforts · 02/12/2021 00:08

Just found this funny that on a thread about the most thoughtless gifts, ex used to buy this! Despite me telling him every year it made my skin itch 😩

wheresmymojo · 02/12/2021 00:21

I once bought my horrible, elderly gin-loving Stepnan a bottle of gin called 'Death's Door'

She is now dead. But it wasn't the fault of the gin.

PizzaCrust · 02/12/2021 00:26

Smellies that smell grim
Useless kitchen utensils
If she doesn’t like hot chocolate, hot chocolate sachets (etc)
Itchy hat and gloves set

Basically anything you can pass off as a gift but has an issue with it so it’s annoying and just takes up space in her house for the next 15 years.

VioletRose91 · 02/12/2021 00:33

Gift cards.
You can get them in every supermarket, that’s what I get people I can’t be arsed shopping for.

Lalliella · 02/12/2021 00:37

Why don’t you twin her toilet with one in Africa?

Or a lavender bath set 🤢

KimikosNightmare · 02/12/2021 00:43

@BlueGreenGlaring

It’s funny, that lots of you hate them and think them common, but you all know their name 🤣🤣🤣
As with the Elf on a Shelf I'd never heard of Bayliss and Harding until I read about it on MN. I've never given or received any.
Goldbar · 02/12/2021 00:47

Something that takes up lots of space and is really, really difficult to get rid of. Buy it secondhand from someone who is desperate to get rid of it so you have a warm, fuzzy feeling of doing them a good turn at least. And no returns.

DoItAfraid · 02/12/2021 01:00

@WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia

You can buy dung as a charity present for poor farmers. You could say in the gift card, “saw this and thought of you xx” about literal shit.
Omg 🙈🙈🙈
IJoinedJustForThisThread · 02/12/2021 01:12

I bought someone a pendant with a cow on it - whilst I bought it for a friend as we have an ongoing joke that we call each other a cow, you could get it for her to let her know what you think of her.

Anything Bayliss & Harding or Soap and Glory. Twenty years ago when nightshirts were in fashion I took it as a great insult when I received one as a gift.

If a gift card, buy it for a shop that doesn’t have a branch anywhere near where she lives, so that she would have to make a real effort to use it. Or for a shop that she would never go to eg Claire’s Accessories.

Do they still make those foot warmers that are giant “two feet in one slipper” ? To me, that screams “old lady”.

Does she dislike a particular colour/animal/insect/tv programme/celebrity? A friend of mine who is an evil genius once bought me a life size cardboard cut out of a celebrity that I detest. If she hates dogs, for example, how about presents from the Dogs’ Trust Christmas range, or a dog calendar?

IJoinedJustForThisThread · 02/12/2021 01:14

Tartan wheeled shopping trolley, a bottle of blue rinse and one of those clear plastic fold-up rain bonnets that tie under the chin?

KloppsTeeth · 02/12/2021 03:28

Coffee creams.

me4real · 02/12/2021 03:48

One year a lot of people (esp sister) had annoyed me, so I made salt dough fridge magnets with a shapeless lump of dough too big for the magnet to be able to work 🤣

TheBabyBoo · 02/12/2021 04:00

In conversation give her a few examples of gifts and ask her what she would/wouldn’t like. Give her one of the things she said she wouldn’t like and claim “oh I must have got it mixed up, silly me”.

HeartvsBrain · 02/12/2021 04:01

@Fl0w3ry

Bath stuff, chocolates and those little mini drinks gift sets that come with a glass.
I love bath stuff, chocolates, and those mini bottles of alcohol that come with a glass - as long as it isn't either whiskey or whisky, which makes me ill!!
Squeezyhug · 02/12/2021 04:31

If you have to buy a gift you may as well buy it in good spirit or not at all.
I don’t see the point in buying a ‘crap’ gift for the sake of it.
Surely Christmas is about being with the people you love and enjoying quality time with them.
We don’t exchange gifts at Christmas for the reason it can get ‘complicated’
We just focus on enjoying doing what we like on the day, and buy each other presents throughout the year and for birthdays.
We don’t invite people over if we don’t like them.
A bit unconventional but it beats a lots of stress and we don’t have to exchange pleasantries with people we don’t like.
Life is too short.

lightisnotwhite · 02/12/2021 04:37

@Poppins17

I love a Baylis and Harding gift set!!! Wondering what they says about me Grin
My SIL buys them for me ( regifts more likely). There was a bath foam last year that had the most fabulous scent, just so nice and was great on my sensitive skin. I really like them too now.
Dollyparton3 · 02/12/2021 04:51

Every year without fail my MiL gives me a box of those awful liqueur chocolates shaped like a bottle and I can't even give them away. This year she surpassed herself and gave them to be for my birthday as well. I'm pretty sure some old soak gives them to her and she regifts them to me.

The irony is that we can't even donate them to our local food bank so they're utterly useless. We used to put them in the bin for our local bin rummaging man to find.

So yes, I've bought her a £6 box of liqueur chocolates. I'll add Bayliss & Harding to the list now

nettie434 · 02/12/2021 04:58

The charity gifts are an excellent idea. Not sure what your budget is, LadyCampanulaTottington, but if you did go for an experience like Tea for Two, or theatre tokens, she would have to invite someone else. She would then have to listen to the other person saying 'Oh how lucky you are, what a generous daughter Campanula is'.
