Gifts for people you hate

I have to buy a gift for my odious mother. For many complex reasons I can’t not but I want to put as little thought and effort in as possible.

What have you bought for people you hate? I need ideas!

A charity gift is a brilliant idea!
My sister once bought me a goat for a farmer somewhere. I’d probably p*ssed her off which is why I got the goat, but at least a farmer was alright for milk or maybe had a nice goat curry at some point lol

WouldBeGood · 02/12/2021 09:30

There was a bit of a stooshie two Christmases ago when I threw him out for being racist @Opal8 so not keen to stir it up!

LadyCampanulaTottington · 02/12/2021 09:30

@MrsFoxyplease

A food basket involved thought and looks like you've gone to a lot of effort OP. You need something like a basic foot spa ( that will get used maybe once) or how about a vase ( pity she hasn't a flower subscription this yearGrin).
I did think that but I've bundled in my sister and BIL to the gift so she'll have to share the thoughtfulness Grin
@Muchtoomuchtodo I don't mind Yankee candle tealights and love Turkish delight (ideally the large fresh powdered type), can I pair up with you and be annoying? Wink
Same here, I would be happy!

CharityDingle · 02/12/2021 09:34

@ReginaGeorgeOG

Dig out the gift they bought for you last year and regift it back 😬 my mom did that to her sister one year, it was hilarious
That is what I was about to suggest. And preferably with a piece of the wrapping paper still stuck to it. Grin
Movinghouseatlast · 02/12/2021 09:36

My birth mother hated me but had to buy me presents.

She gave me very obviously regifted items. Champagne glasses engraved to her, a 10 year old make up bag, some free samples from Liz Earle. I was aware of the hatred with every gift I opened, but anyone watching me open it wouldn't have noticed.

Toilet twinning - does good and unless someone wants to display the certificate in their own bog, utterly useless

I got a sponsored goat once and it was my favourite present that year! I love goats, would love to keeps some but it’s impractical, so having a vicarious goat was lovely.

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 02/12/2021 09:48

Small Christmas plush toy.

CharlieSays13 · 02/12/2021 09:48

Himalayan salt in a plastic dispenser that cracks the first time you use it.

Totalwasteofpaper · 02/12/2021 10:09

@ImInStealthMode

If you bought me a jigsaw you'd be my best mate forever Blush

Babyliss & Harding is the true gift that says 'I had to buy you a gift, I didn't want to'.

This.

B&H is truly the zero fucks given gift.

Beautiful3 · 02/12/2021 10:17

A dove set.

Blackmagicqueen · 02/12/2021 10:26

My (now estranged) MIL once gifted me opened perfume in a brand I'd never heard of that smelt like toilet freshener so ended up going on top of the loo! It was literally one of those ex display ones you get discounted or free! I was abit Shock and she paired it with some disgusting blue triangle earrings that id never seen anywhere in existence!

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 02/12/2021 10:52

A really inconvenient afternoon tea is a good one. Pick one miles away with lots of restrictions, like not being able to use the voucher at weekends.

Buy them one of those makeover photo shoots things. Costs you like £10-20, but they’ll get the hard sell afterwards and feel obliged to buy an awful glamour shot of themselves. I’ve always been tempted to do that one but I’ve not had the guts!

BarbaraofSeville · 02/12/2021 10:56

[[https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/the-pink-stuff-miracle-scrubber-brush-set-371634 Bathroom grout cleaning kit. I saw this in B&M a week or so ago and I was Shock and Hmm at the thought of someone producing or buying this as a gift.

DottyHarmer · 02/12/2021 11:14

Dsis once gave me 55 Plus Night Repair Creme. I was in my 40s! She also always gives me size 16 clothes. I am size 8. There is some message there….

DottyHarmer · 02/12/2021 11:17

Agree with the restricted gift experience. Very frustrating because it is the gift that keeps on not giving as you have to make an effort to try to use it. Someone once gave me a chalk paint chair-painting experience. I rang up to book and they said they only took bookings in person. And only when the board outside said they had availability. And they couldn’t say when the board would be out. Needless to say I was unable to avail myself of the experience within the six-month window.

CandyCane3000 · 02/12/2021 11:22

Ugly jewelry from a charity shop put in a nice jewelry gift box (ha ha) talc....crap smellies...oooh no get her a horrible framed picture so she has to hang it on her wall?!! Or a stupid ornament 🤣🤣...let us all know how it goes 🤭

sofakingcool · 02/12/2021 11:25
**@Poppins17* @AD3000* me too, I’ve actually asked dh for the Baylis & Harding light up glass decanter bubble bath for Christmas, it was a toss up between that and the Christmas wreath set but I liked the bottle best and how it is reusable and will look nice on the shelf! I’ve used up the bauble shaped ones from last year that smelt lovely! 🤫☺️
@Blackmagicqueen , just in case someone might like one of those bottles, where would one find one? BlushGrin

sqirrelfriends · 02/12/2021 11:26

Large piece of charity shop furniture.

My most loathed gift was a broom because I "don't have one" I did, it's just easier to use the cordless vac. This was from a relative that always wants to "quickly sweep up" a clean floor.

buntybanana · 02/12/2021 11:26

For my nasty, racist & Brexit voting grandparents I donated £20 to a refugee charity in their name and it sent them a card with "Some people never stop changing the world" on the front.

WouldBeGood · 02/12/2021 11:30

@buntybanana 🤣🤣

ImNotCrazyIWasTested · 02/12/2021 11:30

@SylviaTrench

If you’re giving a jigsaw remember to open the box first and remove a piece Wink
Or you could buy this!

Drops of youth cream from the Bodyshop...................

allfurcoatnoknickers · 02/12/2021 11:39

Not relevant in your situation, but I loathe my FIL and current step-MIL. She's a lot younger and they have a toddler, so I bought the toddler an elaborate Play-doh slime kit Grin.

Toddler delighted, step-MIL clearly furious but had to be nice about it.

I don't get on with my mother either, so I just throw money at something expensive and easy. She'll send my dad to tell me off if I don't get her enough stuff every year Angry.
