Thought I'd start a thread, so anyone planning on buying it can post any offers they see. I'm holding out for Amazon Black Friday as they had it on offer last year.

I'm in two minds still, if I should get it for dd11. She is completely obsessed with Pokemon, particularly Eevee. She has a Nintendo 2DSXL already. I did tell her it was too expensive and maybe if I found an offer I could get it but she'd get nothing else, or I could get her a few 2DS games and other presents, and she chose the second option. I wouldn't really just get her the one present though. I'm thinking of getting it anyway, and a few other smaller presents. I could ask family to buy her the 2DS games she wants. It's just so expensive, compared to presents I usually buy... my budget is usually around £200-250 for main presents and £70 on stocking.

My just turned six year old asked for one. I think he’s forgotten now but I know he would like it. I’m in 2 minds,!inthink he’s too young and it’s too expensive

zen1 · 28/10/2018 00:08

Placemarking as the Switch is no.1 on 12 yr old DS’s Christmas list. He is obsessed with Nintendo and has other Nintendo consoles, but he really wants a Switch. I would normally not spend the £250 + it costs (that’s not even taking the £40 games into account!) on a present, but if there was a good offer, I might be persuaded if he were to put in half the money (he has a birthday near Christmas so would have birthday money from relatives). It just seems so expensive compared to other consoles.

DD got a switch last year, it's a great system. Loads more games coming out for it recently.

Lazypoolday · 28/10/2018 00:14

DD got one last Christmas and loves it. At first there weren't many games but lots more have come out recently. The whole family like it really. I enjoyed playing super Mario Odyssey and super Mario party just came out which we all play. It's great that it doubles as a handheld device as well as being able to play on tv. Definitely worth it IMO

Nalaking · 28/10/2018 00:15

We’ve just bought ds a switch for Christmas, we wouldn’t normally spend so much but he usually has his older brothers hand me downs and he’s beeen desperate for one since they came out. We paid £289 for the switch and the mario Odessy game, I’m going to keep an eye out for games in the sale between now and then too. Fingers crossed.

Slappinthebass · 28/10/2018 00:46

My dd is the only gamer in our house, otherwise I'd do it as a family present and justify the expense that way. I did suggest a PlayStation as DH and I would definitely play guitar hero/rock band, but she doesn't want one. It's Pokemon games she wants it for almost exclusively. The amount of games coming out doesn't really have much sway for me, when do other families buy their children new games? Here it's birthday/Christmas only.

My 10 year old asked for one while watching a TV ad, then when she saw the price at the end said “oh no, not at that price, I’d like it but not £295 worth”!

Made me laugh.

MyArris · 28/10/2018 01:00

We bought one as soon as they came out last year and it's been brilliant. Used so much. Definitely had value for money and the games are amazing.

Trudee · 28/10/2018 08:56

We bought a Switch as a joint main present last Xmas for our 2 ds's. It has been such a hit that we are buying another one as a joint main present again this year. There have been so many arguments over which game to play, whose turn it us etc that we figured one each would solve the issues (and we have no other ideas for 'main' presents)
There have been plenty of games they like, Pokemon and Mario particularly. New games are only bought by us at birthdays/Xmas but ds's have clubbed together pocket money to buy a couple for themselves.
Definitely worth it if you can justify the cost but not sure about any offers atm. I'll be on the lookout

Imustbemad00 · 28/10/2018 09:05

Would people say 6 is too young? Not just for switch, but the whole console thing in general?

calpop · 28/10/2018 09:09

They are brilliant. As is Nintendo Labo. 6 on the young side but fine with time limirs is say. My youngest was 7 when we got one last year..Also look at Nintendo Labo, really brilliant. Now its a xouple of years of yeara ols you can pick up secomd hand games cheaper. We have a local game shop tgat does them and ive bought a couple in there.

buckeejit · 28/10/2018 09:11

We have a wii which is about 15 years old. Thinking of getting ds who's 9 in a week a console for Christmas. Switch is good as it's small & portable. Can they meet friends online with it? And what are the best games if there's bundle deals?

mammmamia · 28/10/2018 09:12

How much time are your DC allowed to spend on them?
DS8 would love one but I’m afraid he’d never do anything else.

DragonMamma · 28/10/2018 09:13

My DS7 has a Switch last year and it’s been a great investment - he loves it. We complete Mario Odyssey together over the Christmas period and we regularly compete on Mario Kart. He’s also got Splatoon, Mario vs Rabbids and Lego World which he loves. Oh and Minecraft and Fortnite!

He’ll get the new Pokemon game for Christmas and he also wants Spider-Man for the PS4, which is meant to be phenomenal.

DragonMamma · 28/10/2018 09:14

buckeejit some games support online gaming with friends. Mario Kart, Fortnite and Minecraft all do.

DragonMamma · 28/10/2018 09:18

I’d get the Pokemon bundle this year, if you’re buying a console. This is the latest game and some consoles have Pokemon branding, if he’s in to that of course!

Otherwise you can get a decently priced bundle like this one £290 - and still have money for a newer game (£45) So you’d get 2 games for the price of the new Pokemon bundle (£340)

Rainbowturkey · 28/10/2018 09:19

I bought one for my family in July when amazon had them on offer, was meant to put it away from Christmas but opened it during the summer holiday.
It’s a great console, my youngest is currently playing playing fortnite online with her school friends.

The games are expensive and rarely drop in price like for example PS4 games do. Even second hand they are not much cheaper than new. Dd has asked for the new Pokemon game for Christmas and with the pokeball it’s £85!

PrincessHairyMclary · 28/10/2018 09:21

I brought the switch last year when DD was 8 we aren't really a gaming family but I'm doing an OU degree and wanted something that she might be able to amuse herself with.

I think it's a good family console, lots of games that you can just pick up and play without have to get engrossed in a long session of game play like some consoles and the games we have are quite sociable so DD isn't stuck playing it on her own. There are a fair amount of free demos to download and play so you can try before you buy. Not all of the games are £40 just the big ones there are several for under £10 to download. I like that it can be as a handheld device too and it's very portable and she often takes it to her grandparents to play with them and her uncle.

Games from me are a birthday or Christmas affair or cheaper ones before a school holiday

Slappinthebass · 28/10/2018 10:02

@Rainbowturkey Ooh how much was it last on offer for on Amazon? Might give me an idea for the Black Friday deal.

@PrincessHairyMclary thanks for telling me how often you buy games. My dd had a marbel jar for good behaviour, it's nearly full and I said she can have a second hand DS game when it is if she wants. But other than that (and she's been trying to fill it for 4 months) then only birthdays/Christmas. I don't want her to be bored with the Switch when she's finished a game bit don't want to spend £50 outside of birthday/Christmas either. It's good to know there are cheaper games available.

Stargirl90 · 28/10/2018 10:07

The new Pokémon switch console has the new game pre installed on it, and is £340, a switch is about £290 alone and the Pokémon game is £60-90 (depends if it has the poke ball controller with it). I have pre ordered one for myself 🤣. If getting the £90 game it's cheaper to get the Pokémon console. But I can imagine the normal consoles are likely to go on offer before Christmas

Lovemusic33 · 28/10/2018 10:12

I’m waiting for Black Friday, dd has asked for one, I don’t usually spend that much on a gift but there’s nothing else she wants so this will be her only gift. She’s after the Pokemon edition but if the price doesn’t go down I will buy her the basic one and her dad can buy her a game.

Slappinthebass · 28/10/2018 10:34

I'm really hoping the Pokemon edition is in the black Friday deal as that's the one I want to get her. If the Pikachu game is the only one on offer, would I then only need the Eevee game, as the ball will be the same? I'm really inept when it comes to gaming. Is there much difference between let's go Pikachu and let's go Eevee?

Very have it available in three payment instalments, which I'm tempted with, though I've never bought any jtems on credit like that.

DD (10) has asked for one for her 11th birthday which is in January.

Normally I wouldn’t spend this much on birthdays but I got her older brother an Xbox1 when he turned 11 (which is used ALL the time!) so I kind of feel I should do the same for her.

Also it’s a way of chatting to friends online when she starts secondary school. She likes Mario type games.

Definitely looking for a good deal though as it is so £££!

NoWordForFluffy · 28/10/2018 10:49

I've absolutely no idea how Very compares for pricing as our DC aren't yet old enough to ask for a console (or they are, but are thankfully unaware of their existence!). But there's 10% cashback on certain consoles here.
